NORWEGIAN DUO EARNS NATIONAL ATTENTION: Christina Moberg and Hanna Haanes, bothfreshmenontheUSFwomen’ssoccerteam,havebeennamedtothisweek’sTopDrawerNational100Division ICollegeFreshmen,asannouncedbythewebsiteWednesday.MobergandHaanes,bothnativesofNorway,aretwoofeightfreshmenfromtheWestCoastConferencetoappearonthisweek’slist.Mobergisranked89ththisweek,whileHaanesislistedat91st.SanFranciscoisjustoneoftwoWestCoastConferenceschoolstolandtwoormorefreshmaninthisweek’sranks.Portlandleadsthepackwiththreehonors,includingthehighestrankedWCCrepresentative,ErinDees.ThePilots’goalkeeperchecksinatNo.9.LoyolaMarymount,SantaClara,PepperdineandSaintMary’sallhaveonestudent-athleteranked.

GOALSAPLENTY:ThefourgoalsagainstSantaBarbara(Aug.29)markedthefirsttimesincea4-0victoryoverCalStateNorthridgein2006thattheDonshavescoredfourormoretalliesagainstaDivision I opponent. OFFENSEONSTRONGPACE:SanFrancisco’soffensehassteppedupitsgamethisfall,alreadyscoringjustunderhalfofthegoalsscoredlastyearfortheDons.In2009,USFrecorded23goalsontheseason.Todate,SanFranciscohasposted11infivematches.Individually,theDonsarepostingbetternumbersaswell.Forthepasttwoseasons,theDons’assistleaderfortheseasonhadrecordedtwoassists.ThreemembersoftheGreenandGoldaccomplishedthefeatin2008,whilesixdidlastseason.Thisseason,MollyHallandChristinaMobergeachhaveearnedtwoassists.BothofHall’sassistscameagainstUCSantaBarbaralastSunday.Inaddition,HannaHaaneshastiedthetop-goalscorerstotalforthepasttwoyearswithfournetted.ThelasttimeaDonsscoredmorethanfourgoalsinaseasonwasin2006whenFionaO’Sullivantalliedfive.

DONSIMPROVEGREATLYIN2009:AccordingtoSopisSports–asportsinformationcompanythatcoverscollegiatesports,theUSFwomen’ssoccerprogramwasoneofthemostimprovedDivisionIwomen’ssoccerprogramsin2009.USFfinished23rdintheranking,witha1.08improvementrating.SanFranciscoposteda5-13-2recordin2008,beforeimprovingto7-7-5in2009.

TWONORWEGIANSARRIVEONTHEHILLTOP:ChristinaMobergandHannaHaanes,bothnativesofNor-way,areinthefirstseasonoftheircollegiatecareersatUSF.HannescomestoSanFranciscowithaplethoraofinternationalexperienceunderherbelt.ThefreshmanhascompetedfortheU16,U17,U19,U20andU23NorwegianNationalTeams.ShewasnamedPlayeroftheMatchintwoEuropeanChampionshipcontests.MobergjoinstoUSFafter leadingFirstDivisionAskerFKtoa2007NorwegianCupChampionship.WhileplayingforAsker,Mobergtalliedanimpressive30goals.Todate,theduohasrecordedsevengoalsandtwoassistsforUSF,whiletaking14shots,11ongoal.TwooftheDons’threegame-winninggoalshavecomethankstotheeffortsoftheNorwegians.
