Celebrate this undeniable contributor to music with lots of performance clips of the famous crooners, and interviews with Frank Sinatra, Jr., Harry Crosby, Tony Bennett, Woody Allen, Angie Dickinson, Shirley MacLaine, John Pizzarelli and many others. notes from the President & Ceo
Chet Tomczyk, President & CEOWTVP
Interim General ManagerWILL AM-FM-TV
It’s hard to believe that twenty years at WTVP conclude at the end of this month. It’s been a terrific ride, and I want to express my deep appreciation to you for your support, your encouragement, your calls and notes when we got something right, and when we didn’t.
To say that I have stood on the shoulders of giants over the last score of years is gross understatement. What was conceived by Dr. Phil Weinberg and the insightful founders of the Illinois Valley Public Telecommunications Corporation in 1969, and what went operational as WTVP in 1971 under the aegis of Elwin Basquin who managed the station for 25 years before me, was the foundation of the public media operation that now serves Central Illinois.
Since that time, WTVP began broadcasting twenty-four hours per day, converted to a digital format of broadcast, moved to a new production and operations center on the Peoria Riverfront, and began broadcasting three separate program streams. This all happened because of oversight by dedicated individuals who served on the Board of Trustees and contributed generously of their time, talent and treasure. The leadership of Board Chairs Greg Stinson, J. Reed Roesler, Ross Canterbury, Marianne Moll, Henry Allovio Jr., Joe O’Neill, Andrew Rand, and Joe Strupek was inspired. It seems that the IVPTC Board always had the right leader at the right time to see WTVP through obstacles and take advantage of opportunities.
If that is the foundation of the organi-zation, then the moving parts are the dedicated, professional WTVP staff members who are totally committed to public broadcasting. It is they who do the work and allow me to take credit for their accomplishments. I am not going to mention them by name because I will invariably miss somebody, so as a group, I want them to know how close they all are to my heart and how much I have valued
their work, their friendship and their loyalty as we have traversed the highest highs and the lowest lows of the past two decades.
A grateful tip of the hat to our many corporate supporters and friends, espe-cially the Caterpillar Foundation who has so generously supported WTVP by matching the gifts of Caterpillar employees and retirees, and to Glen and Polly Barton who co-chaired the campaign for the digital conversion and whose generosity continues.
Special thanks and appreciation go to you and all the members who have so generously supported the station over the years with financial contributions, matching gifts, and volunteer support in so many activities and special events like auctions, bowl-a-thons, yard sales, pledge phones, and so much more.
Finally, as I retire from 50 years in public broadcasting, I would be totally remiss if I did not reserve the greatest thanks to my family and especially my wife and life partner, Connie, who has been my rock, my support, my muse.
To paraphrase that old quote: Public broadcasting has been very good to me. I have been blessed to be in Central Illinois. Thank you.
Farewell and God bless,

Dudamel Does VerdiGreat Performances has done it again! In commemoration of the 2013 Giuseppe Verdi bicentennial, Music Director Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic perform a stirring concert of Verdi’s towering Requiem Mass at the Hollywood Bowl. Before the per-formance, the maestro shares his enthusiasm for the iconic venue, the largest natural amphitheater in the country, and for Verdi’s pas-sionate and highly theatrical work: a mass, yes, but “in an opera way,” as Dudamel explains.
The concert presentation features soloists Julianna Di Giacomo (so-prano), Michelle DeYoung (mezzo-soprano), Vittorio Grigolo (tenor) and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo (bass).
Thrilling music, great soloists and a star-power conductor come together in Great Performances: Dudamel Conducts the Verdi Requiem at The Hollywood Bowl. The concert airs Friday, Aug. 1 at 8 p.m.
The performance was recorded live last summer, and features the Los Angeles Master Chorale, currently in its 50th season, under the direc-tion of Grant Gershon.

Food for ThoughtHere’s something to sink your teeth into! Back by popular demand are Dr. Joel Fuhrman and Michael Mosely with specials that look into eating for health and longevity.
Dr. Fuhrman’s End Dieting Forever!Break free from dieting once and for all with practical, effective advice from Dr. Joel Fuhrman, a New York Times best-selling author, leading expert and board-certified physician who specializes in the preven-tion and reversal of disease using nutritional solutions. The program includes cooking demonstrations; advice on staying active, vibrant and healthy later in life; and nutritional methods to prevent and even reverse obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and more.
Premieres Sunday, Aug. 10 at 11:30 a.m.
Eat, Fast and Live Longer with Michael MoselyBritish journalist and physician Michael Mosley has set himself an ambitious goal: to live longer, stay younger and lose weight, while making as few changes to his life as possible. In working toward these goals, Mosley discovers a powerful new science behind the old idea of fasting, a program that still allows him to enjoy his favorite foods. Mosley learns that a diet based on feast and famine has powerful effects on the body, reducing the risks of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers while retaining the anti-ag-ing clout of calorie restriction. And what’s good for the body may also be good for the brain!
Premieres Monday, Aug. 11 at 8 p.m.

BreathlessJust what the doctor ordered! Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean, Smash), Zoe Boyle (Downton Abbey), and Catherine Steadman (Mansfield Park) team up for a medical series with as-tounding suspense, supreme satire, and smart sixties style on Breath-less, airing in three parts on Masterpiece Mystery!, Sundays, Aug. 24 – Sep. 7 at 8 p.m.
Set in London in 1961, Breathless follows the exploits of doctors, nurses, and spouses connected with a busy obstetrics ward at a National Health Service hospital. It’s a time when doctors were treated like gods—and acted the part—gynecologists are all men and nurses aspire to a trip down the aisle with a good-looking doc-tor. Abortion is illegal, The Beatles are still nobodies, and society is on the cusp of profound change.
No one seems to have more going for him than Otto Powell (Daven-port), a brilliant London surgeon who can perform miracles in the operating room. But there is a dark secret hidden among the com-plexities of the sexual revolution. Between Otto’s wandering eye, social climbing, secret abortions, and an obsessed detective who thinks out-of-the-box, this stylish series will leave you…breathless.

Dorothea lange, American MasterDorothea Lange’s photography has long outlasted the woman herself. Her celebrated photograph “Migrant Mother” is one of the most recognized and arresting images in the world, a haunting portrait that came to represent the suffering of America’s Great Depression. Very influential in its time, the photograph—and photographer—continue to influence art and America as a whole. However, few know the story, struggles and profound body of work of the woman behind the camera.
American Masters—Dorothea lange: Grab a Hunk of lightning, premiering Friday, August 29 from 8-10 p.m., explores the life, passions and uncompromising vision of the in-fluential photographer. Her enduring images document five turbulent de-cades of American history, including the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl and World War II Japanese American internment camps. Peabody- and five-time Emmy award-winning cinematographer Dyanna Taylor — the granddaughter of Lange and writer/social scientist Paul Schuster Taylor — directs and narrates this intimate documentary.
Taylor, who learned to see the visual world through her grandmother’s eyes, combines family memories and journals with never-before-seen photos and film footage to bring Lange’s story into sharp focus. New interviews also show how the artist challenged America to look at the ugly side of itself. The result is a per-sonal documentary of the artist whose empathy for people on the margins of society challenged America to know itself.

WtVP news notes
local Spotlight
&Thanks to “Something of love”—the documentary tribute to Ottawa Township music teacher Roger Amm by filmmaker Kane Farabaugh—WTVP was awarded a Silver Dome for Outstanding Achievement in Broadcasting from the Illinois Broadcasters Associa-tion. Linda Miller, our retired VP of Programming, accepted the honor on the station’s behalf at the awards ceremony on Jun. 18. Only fitting since it was she who recognized the show’s excellence and impact and brought it to the WTVP airwaves. Congratulations all around.
&Public television broadcasting in the quad Cities has come home to Illinois. On July 1 at 7:01 p.m., WTVP took over broadcast and master control operations of WQPT-Quad Cities PBS. This new arrangement represents months of behind-the-scenes—and on-go-ing—work on infrastructure, equipment and technology. WTVP’s team was led by Chief Engineer Bill Porter and includes Engineers James Jordan and Brett Ring, Operations Manager Jackie Luebcke, IT Director Mark Lasswell with Traffic Manager Jed Klabunde and operators Paul Coussens and Will Crotz. The new broadcasting ar-rangement does not affect either station’s programming, governance or community services.
And look for these upcoming events…August 2
WTVP Road Trip to Jumer’s Casino, Rock Island with the Pekin Friends of 47. Reserve your seat with Connie Eldert, (309) 620-4399
August 16, 10 a.m.-noon
WTVP Farewell Open House. See the studio, control rooms, mobile production and satellite units, and say good-bye to Chet Tomczyk, WTVP President & CEO.
August 22, 28 & 29, 6:30 p.m. each night
Live tapings of Jazz from Studio 47. Come be part of a live audience as we turn the WTVP Studio into a jazz café. Must be seated by 6:45 p.m.
Illinois AdventureJoin the Adventure on Aug. 7 and travel to Grand Detour to visit the John Deere Historic Site, see a replica of Deere’s first Illinois shop, and learn how Deere opened the prairie with his new steel plow. On Aug. 21, head to Princeton to visit the Bureau County Historical Museum and see the oldest covered bridge in Illinois. And on Aug. 28, go to the Chicago Historical Society’s Museum to view a collection of arti-facts that reach back in time to the birth of our nation—and provide a window on Chicago history.
illinois Adventure, hosted by Jim Wilhelm and produced by William Baker, generally airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m., repeating the following Sundays at 4 p.m. For program descriptions, visit wtvp.org. For additional information on past episodes, locations, contact information and directions, visit our Illinois Adventure website at www.illinoisadventuretv.org.
This program is made possible by a grant from Country Financial.
At Issue Special Edition—Managing Change at the Pere Marquette HotelThe Peoria Marriott Pere Marquette Hotel recently dropped the Marriott management team but will retain the Marriott name. The change to management by First Hospital-ity Group did not occur, however, until approved by the Peoria City Council because more than a third of the funding comes in the form of bonds and a loan from the city. In the next At Issue, hotel owner Gary Matthews, general manager Joe Lomonaco and Peoria City Manager Patrick Urich will discuss the changes and what it means to the hotel, the Peoria Civic Center and taxpayers.
This special edition of At issue, hosted by H Wayne Wilson, airs Thursday, Aug. 7 at 8:30 p.m. with an encore Friday, Aug. 8 at 8:30 p.m. on the WORLD Channel, WTVP 47.2. Viewers will also be able to see it online at the WTVP website, www.wtvp.org, after the broadcasts.
Interesting Peopleinteresting People with host Ed Sutkowski typically airs Fridays at 7:30 p.m. The series can also be seen each Wednesday from 8-9 p.m. on WTVP World channel 47.2. See page 14 for complete local World listings. For more informa-tion on upcoming Interesting People shows visit www.wtvp.org.
This month’s guests are:8/1— NBA star Shaun Livingston
8/8—Actor Steve Vinovich
8/22—Agriculture/Economics Professor Neil Harl
8/29—Robert Schultz and William Maloney
The New PeoriansThis WTVP-produced series explores the immigrant history of Central Illinois with archival materials and stories of the legacies of these ‘new peorians’. Thurs-days at 8:30 p.m., repeating the following Sundays at 4:30 p.m.
8/21—The Irish
8/28—The Germans

4August 9 & 10—Seafood Supper Summertime is perfect for a seafood supper, and our Create Greats have the best recipes! Your seafood buffet will have “yummy” written all over it when you try Lidia’s Shrimp Scampi, Sara’s grilled Mahi Mahi and Jacques’ lobster—just a few of the tasty delights featured throughout our marathon.
4August 16 & 17—Global Rhythm Put on your dancing shoes and groove with the beat as we travel the world to join in on the Global Rhythm! Rudy Maxa gets up close and personal with Flamenco dancers in Madrid. Kick up your feet in Ireland with Rick Steves, take a spin with Jacob Edgar in Columbia’s Capital of Salsa, and shake it up with Brittany Pierce in the tropical paradise of Tahiti.
4August 23 & 24—Be Cool Let Create take you to some of the coldest regions in the world. Burt Wolf, Joseph Rosendo and Art Wolfe will take you on unforgettable journeys through Alaska and Switzerland, and Chef Tina Nordstrom will take you ice fishing, reindeer racing, and more during her great adventure in Sweden.
4August 30 & 31—Last of the Summer Fun The unofficial end to summer is upon us. Grillmaster Steven Raichlen has fantastic grilling tips just in time for your Labor Day barbecue. The grill is fired up with succulent seafood, racks of ribs and pork that’s just waiting to be pulled! Invite your friends and family over for the last of the summer fun!

The Heritage ensembleCulture and history are interwoven throughout our lives, but not always well understood or communicated. Both cultural understanding and history come together in Heritage ensemble: tearing Down Walls and Building Bridges of Understanding Through Music. A new production from Bob Jacobs of Bradley University, this music documentary features full performances by the Heritage En-semble as well as interviews with founder Sharon Samuels Reed and other Ensemble members. The program premieres Thursday, Aug. 7 at 9 p.m., with an encore on Sunday, August 31 at 3 p.m.
The Heritage Ensemble seems to be reaching their goal of bringing together many different types of people; the group has performed in many different places such as Iowa, Paris, Texas, and even Carnegie Hall. With their efforts, the African American experience is being retold and communities are being brought together. To learn more about the Heritage Ensemble and to find out about upcoming events, visit heritageensemble.com.
