The WUWM Definition of a Wholesale Market…
“Wholesale market means premises managed as a food business by a market authority within the confines of which independent food businesses operate and may share common installations where
foodstuffs are traded, stored, prepared or processed.”

“A Retail Market means those premises,
often covered buildings, which unite
a variety of commercial establishments
and retail entrepreneurs
that provide a wide commercial offer of food products of daily consumption, complemented by other non-food products, and all this under a unity of management”.

General WUWM Info…Legal Seat: From 1955 until mid 2003 WUWM existed under the legal
umbrella of IULA
In June 2003 WUWM was established as an autonomous association, domiciled in The Netherlands
Secretariat: The WUWM Secretariat (the only office) is based in The Hague, The Netherlands; managed by the Secretary General based there.
Board: Chairman, vice-Chairman and 11 Directors representing 13 countries. Two-year mandates. Annual, staggered elections.
Membership: Currently 207 members in 40 countries
Funding: WUWM as a non-profit association totally reliant on
annual membership fee payments. To ensure future sustainability some commercial activities are currently under Board review…

Who Do We Unite?1. Retail Markets - An ‘organisation’ which has a core business of operating retail
markets. An ‘organisation’ can be a public or private retail market operator or an association of cities and/or operators
2. Wholesale Markets - Individual markets or market organizations directly involved in the operation and management of local-authority owned, state-owned and/or private wholesale markets
3. National market trader organisations
4. Individual wholesale/retail market traders
5. Other sector professionals, academics, consultants, private service companies, etc

What is the WUWM Vision?1. To ensure wholesale and retail markets are recognised for their important role in
local, national and international food supply chains.
2. That WUWM be viewed as the premier organisation in support of wholesale and retail food market promotion and development by offering excellence in:
a) Information exchange, networking, and cross-fertilization of wholesaleand retail market knowledge.
b) Member development of new business through promoting mutual links, establishing contacts, and helping members enlarge their respective client and supply bases.
3. To ensure effective representation in support of the interests of wholesale and retail markets before international institutions, national and local governments.
