The Oklahoma State Department ofEducation held its first-everSuperintendent’s Student AdvisoryCouncil meeting January 14th in theBlue Room on the second floor of theOklahoma State Capitol. The group wasformed by State Superintendent ofPublic Instruction Joy Hofmeister toprovide a forum for student voices andconcerns. The group is part her largerinitiative to give voice to the manystakeholders in public education so thatmeaningful reforms may be developed. Yarbrough High School student KadenLopez was one of the 67 studentsselected to be a member ofSuperintendent Joy Hofmeister'sStudent Advisory Council. Lopez is a
member of Yarbrough’s junior class, andactive in many sports and activities atthe school. Lopez had to be nominatedby superintendent, and complete adetailed application with two furtherreferences.Lopez explained that the group’s firstmeeting has already discussed manyissues including cyber-bullying, andsuggested changes to the state’s End-of-Instruction requirements. He alsocommented the many members of thegroup spoke against the currentevaluation systems that penalizeteachers for student’s failures onmandated standardized testing, andspoke for the need to increase teacherpay. The group will meet again in April.
