Year 9 Sports Science guidance: Work to be completed at home –
WEEK 3 (week beginning 20.04.2020)
By now you should have already COMPLETED THE FOLLOWING:
1) Read the stapled pack you were given or document (attached below if you scroll down)
highlighted in orange “RO42 applying the principles of training” pages 36-40 and the sample
learner work sheet so you understand how the next assignment will be set out and
structured.
2) Made notes on and completed the printed document titled “PRINCIPLES OF TRAINING
WORKSHEET” you were given in the lesson (this document can also be found below if you
scroll down) if you did not receive a hard-copy in the lesson. You should have used the
stapled pack (attached below) to help you as well as the internet if you have it available to
gather your notes. YOU CAN MAKE THE NOTES EITHER ON LINED PAPER OR ON THE
COMPUTER.
You SHOULD HAVE ALREADY described and explained the following principles of training
within your notes:
Progression/Progressive overload (FITTA (Frequency, intensity, time, type, and
adherence)
Specificity
Reversibility/regression
Moderation
Variance
For each of the above principles of training you should have chosen an athlete of your
choice to explain using a sporting example how each principle of training could be applied
to their own training programme to improve the standard of their performance ready for
a competition (see page 40 of stapled pack for guidance/example of how to do this)
The following link will also help with your understanding of the content:

(Make sure you have finished all of the above before doing this
week’s work. If you have not you cannot move on!)
Week 3 (This week’s work…)
NEXT TASK TO BE STARTED THIS WEEK…
1) Open and begin writing your assignment using Microsoft Word. Title the document
“RO42 LO1: KNOW THE PRINCIPLES OF TRAINING IN A SPORTING CONTEXT” and add your
name to the top header.
If you do not have a computer you can hand write the assignment. This can be copied up
onto the computer at a later stage when you are back in school SO KEEP IT SAFE.
2) Describe ALL of the principles of training and explain how they would be applied to an
athletes training programme to improve performance. Use a range of specific sporting
examples and contexts to explain how each principle could be applied.
Important!
Do not just copy your notes as this will be plagiarism. Put what you have written down in
your own words.
Look at the sample learner work AND marking criteria (below if you scroll down) to see
how the assignment should be structured and set out, you may be able to take some
more points out of the sample learner work to help you explain each principle of training.

“PRINCIPLES OF TRAINING WORKSHEET”
(USE THIS DOCUMENT TO help you make your notes on lined paper), you will find content
information in stapled pack titled “RO42 applying the principles of training” you were
given in the lesson (also available if you scroll down)
Describe PROGRESSION/PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD
Describe the following terms
Frequency
Intensity
Time
Type
Adherence
Explain + apply the principles above for an athlete of your choice…. (USE PG37 TO HELP)
Sporting example Current training programme
Changes that would be made to ensure progressive overload
E.g. a marathon runner who aims to run the marathon in a new personal best Own Example:
Frequency: Intensity: Time: Type: Adherence:
Frequency: Intensity: Time: Type: Adherence:
Describe SPECIFICITY
Explain how specificity would apply to an athlete of your choice…
Example:
E.g. Football players would incorporate drills involving passing, shooting, turning, dribbling,
and tackling into their training as they are specific to their sport.
Describe MODERATION (consider age, gender, environment, experience)
Give a sporting example of how you might apply moderation to a training programme? (see pg.40)
Describe Reversibility/Regression
How would this be applied, give a sporting example below…. (see pg.40)
Describe Variance
How would this be applied, give a sporting example below…. (see pg.40)
