About the faculty
Marcia Monroe, originally from Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil is certified as a Yoga Teacher by the
Iyengar System of Yoga. She has also been
certified by the somatic methods of Body Mind
Centering® and Feldenkrais®, RSMT. She has a degree in Dance and Movement Studies from the State University of New York, and is registered as Somatic Movement Therapist (ISMETA).
She has been studying annually with the Iyengar family in Pune, India for the last several years. She teaches Yoga for scoliosis, asymmetries and back care internationally, and has presented Yoga posters on Yoga and Scoliosis at the International Medical Conference, in Boston in 2007 and in Montreal in 2010. She teaches yoga for children at the Bloomingdale Family Program in New York City as well as courses at the Iyengar Yoga Institute, in New York. She has written the books, Engaging the Child through Yoga (2005) and Yoga and Scoliosis: A Journey to Health and Healing, published by Demos Medical Publishing (2011).
Course 1
Somatic Movement and Yoga for Children with disability How movement and play stimulate learning, feelings, and sensations toward oneself and the environment resulting of new pathway in the nervous system. The contents of the course will be a somatic approach of developmental movement patterns drawn from school BMC in the USA, and their relationship to Yoga postures. The first year of life is the foundation for symmetrical, and asymmetrical movement patterns, diagonals that facilitates motor skills, movement coordination. Participants will learn the Basic Neurological Patterns to evaluate and work with children with and without disability.
Course 2
Iyengar Yoga for Scoliosis and Asymmetry
The 3-days workshop will be experiential.
Day 1
An Introduction for Iyengar Yoga for Scoliosis and Asymmetries-Assessment class. How to assess scoliosis and asymmetries from a yoga paradigm from supine, prone, side line postures. Symmetrical Standing Postures: Focus alignment, axial elongation through isometric postures for muscular improvement, stability, strength, and endurance.Forward elongation standing and lateral asymmetric standing postures. Focus on distal movement to proximal. The limbs as foundation to reduce postural collapses, and to improve muscle tone, strength, stability endurance. PM session: seated postures and forward seated postures elongation
Day 2
Balance and proprioception: Yoga balance postures and gait. PM: Rotations, Forward and Backward elongation and breathing practices
Day 3
Core stability: Yoga abdominal postures modified for scoliosis, asymmetries and back carePM restorative and breathing practices for scoliosis.
