YIGC Women’s Initiative Program on Nov. 10 7
Dear Member,
I hope everyone had an enjoyable and meaningful Yom Tov season. There were many great highlights of
Yom Tov in our shul. From my perspective, this included the beautiful davening on Yom Tov, particularly Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and the great ruach that we had for the Hakafos over Simchas Torah.
Another recent highlight in our shul was the Medical Panel Program that we had on Shabbos, Oct. 13.
The discussion was about mental health, and it attracted a very large and interested crowd. I was pleased at
how the program went, and I received very favorable feedback about it. I am hoping we can continue this
successful program in the future, and help bring clarity to the members of our shul and community.
Sincerely,
Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein

CHANUKAH HALACHOS
The entire Hallel prayer is recited on all eight days of Chanukah. Al HaNissim is recited during the Shemona Esray and Birchat HaMazon; if one forgets to say it, it is not necessary to repeat either prayer.
The lights of the menorah should be set in a straight row, with the exception of the shamash, which should not appear to be in the same row as the others. On each night of Chanukah another light is added, going from right to left. It is preferable to use oil for the Chanukah lights, especially olive oil, although wax candles are also usable.
The menorah should be kindled in the place where one intends to leave it. It should be placed where it will be visible from outside the house. If one is afraid that children may be endangered by such a location, it can be placed in a safer location, even if that means that it will be visible only to members of the household. The menorah should be lit at nightfall (42 minutes after sunset), although one is permitted to light it at sunset. In either case, there should be enough oil present initially to burn until 30 minutes after nightfall. If the flames go out before that time (even though there was enough fuel initially) it is preferable to relight them.
On Friday the menorah is lit before the Shabbos candles. There should be sufficient oil (or sufficiently large candles) to remain burning until 30 minutes after nightfall. The conventional chanukah wax candles would not suffice for Friday evening. If the flames go out after Shabbos begins, do not relight them. On Saturday night, the menorah is lit at home after Havdalah.
One should not begin a meal or do work after the time for lighting the menorah until it is lit. The first night, three brachos are recited; on the other nights only two are recited. The Chanukah lights should not be used for reading or any other purpose.
The mitzvah of lighting Chanukah lights is one of the most beautiful mitzvos we have. Let us hope that our kindling them adds light to the world.

In the blessings of Shema we say the phrase ”והאר עינינו בתורתך “ “Enlighten our eyes in your Torah”.
This prayer is not only for an understanding of Torah, but also that Torah may help us perceive the
truth in everything.
The Torah tells us the story of Hagar and Yishmael, who were stranded in the desert without water.
Hagar abandoned her son and fled, saying that she could not bear to see him die of thirst. Hashem opened
her eyes and she saw a well of water. Hashem did not create a well where none had exited, but “opened
her eyes” so that she could see an already existing well, which she had not seen because of her state of
panic.
Many opportunities may be right before our eyes, but if we become desperate and panicky, we may
fail to see them. Sometimes all that is necessary is a correct perception of reality,

SWITCHING TO V'SEIN TAL UMATAR
Beginning with Maariv on Tuesday night, December 4, 2018 ותן טל ומטר (v'sein tal
u'matar) replaces ותן ברכה (v'sein bracha) in the blessing of Boreich Oleinu in the Shemonah
Esray. If one forgot to make this change, the above phrase may be added in the bracha of
shema koleinu before the phrase "ki atoh shomeiah". If one completed the Shemonah Esray
without making the appropriate change the entire Shemonah Esray must be repeated.
