Portuguese Dual Immersion Language offered at Parkside Elementary MurraySchoolDistrictwillbestartingtheirsecondDualImmersionProgramatParksideElementarySchoolnextschoolyear.ThetargetlanguageisPortuguese,whichwillprovidetoParksideandotherMurrayelementarystudentsanexcitingopportunitytoleave6thgradebilingualandbiliterate–abletofluentlyspeak,read,andwriteintwolanguages. Parksidewill followthesuccessfulSpanishDual ImmersionProgramatHorizonElementarySchool,nowin itsthirdyear. InAugust,2012,approximately56 firstgraders in twoclasseswill learn thesameUtahstatecorecurriculumthatall firstgradersaretaughtwithonedifference–theywilllearnmath,science,andsocialstudiesinPortuguesefromateacherwhospeaksonlyPortugueseforonehalfoftheirschoolday.Duringthesecondhalfoftheirday,theywilllearntheEnglishLanguageArtscurricu-lumfromtheirEnglish-speakingteacher. Theteacherteam,oneEnglish-speakingandonePortuguese-speaking,workverycloselytogethertoensurethatallstudentsinthetwoclassesaresuccessfulinallcontentareas.Anyincomingfirstgraderiseligibleandtheparent/guardianmustapplytohavethechildparticipateintheDualImmersionProgram.Parents/guardiansareaskedtocommittothefullsixyears,firstthroughsixthgrades,sothateachchildreceivesthefullbenefitofthiswonderfulopportunity.AllotherstudentswillbeplacedintheregularprograminwhichtheywilllearnthesamecurriculuminEnglishonly. Parkside will be one of only two Utah schools offering Portuguese Dual Immersion next year. Murray School District andParksidechose toprovide thisopportunity formany reasons. Withover220millionspeakers,Portuguese is theseventhmostwidelyspokenlanguageintheworldandistheofficiallanguageofeightcountries.ThemostwidelyspokenlanguageinSouthAmerica,PortugueseissecondonlytoEnglishasthemostwidelyusedlanguageonwebsitesandinblogging.AlsonoteworthyisthefactthatBrazilisconsideredbymanyscientiststobethecountrywiththemostimportantbiodiversityintheworld.Finally,Brazil’seconomyisexpandingrapidlyandiscurrentlyranked7thintheworldinGDP.
