Portuguese Dual Immersion Language offered at Parkside Elementary MurraySchoolDistrictwillbestartingtheirsecondDualImmersionProgramatParksideElementarySchoolnextschoolyear.ThetargetlanguageisPortuguese,whichwillprovidetoParksideandotherMurrayelementarystudentsanexcitingopportunitytoleave6thgradebilingualandbiliterate–abletofluentlyspeak,read,andwriteintwolanguages. Parksidewill followthesuccessfulSpanishDual ImmersionProgramatHorizonElementarySchool,nowin itsthirdyear. InAugust,2012,approximately56 firstgraders in twoclasseswill learn thesameUtahstatecorecurriculumthatall firstgradersaretaughtwithonedifference–theywilllearnmath,science,andsocialstudiesinPortuguesefromateacherwhospeaksonlyPortugueseforonehalfoftheirschoolday.Duringthesecondhalfoftheirday,theywilllearntheEnglishLanguageArtscurricu-lumfromtheirEnglish-speakingteacher. Theteacherteam,oneEnglish-speakingandonePortuguese-speaking,workverycloselytogethertoensurethatallstudentsinthetwoclassesaresuccessfulinallcontentareas.Anyincomingfirstgraderiseligibleandtheparent/guardianmustapplytohavethechildparticipateintheDualImmersionProgram.Parents/guardiansareaskedtocommittothefullsixyears,firstthroughsixthgrades,sothateachchildreceivesthefullbenefitofthiswonderfulopportunity.AllotherstudentswillbeplacedintheregularprograminwhichtheywilllearnthesamecurriculuminEnglishonly. Parkside will be one of only two Utah schools offering Portuguese Dual Immersion next year. Murray School District andParksidechose toprovide thisopportunity formany reasons. Withover220millionspeakers,Portuguese is theseventhmostwidelyspokenlanguageintheworldandistheofficiallanguageofeightcountries.ThemostwidelyspokenlanguageinSouthAmerica,PortugueseissecondonlytoEnglishasthemostwidelyusedlanguageonwebsitesandinblogging.AlsonoteworthyisthefactthatBrazilisconsideredbymanyscientiststobethecountrywiththemostimportantbiodiversityintheworld.Finally,Brazil’seconomyisexpandingrapidlyandiscurrentlyranked7thintheworldinGDP. Driver Education SummerclassesaretaughtatMurrayHighSchool,Monday-Fridayfor3weeks.Studentsmustbe15to18yearsold.Classtime:8-10AMwithsuperviseddriv-ingtimeeitherbeforeorafterclass;teach-er will let the students know. Murray Community Dance Murray Community Dance programis a nine month program with begin-ning, intermediate and advanced class-es. 2012 Pinnacle award Recipients Named Murray Education Foundation (MEF) proudly announces recipients of the 9thAnnualPinnacleAwards,arecognitionthathonorsoutstandingeffortsofexcellencein education in the Murray City School District. In collaboration with leading Utahbusinesses and the Murray community, the program’s purpose is to recognize that
