NEED OF NETWORKSNEED OF NETWORKS
• One co-ordinator to manage the overall network
• Multiple router to receive and pass on information
• External sensors or other modules to collect and respond to the information that the radios are communicated.
The figure introduces the concept of the ZigBee network topology.
Several topologies are supported by ZigBee, including star, mesh, and cluster tree. Star and mesh networking are both shown in the figure.

NETWORKING CONCEPTNETWORKING CONCEPT
ZigBee defines three different devices type Coordinator Router End Devices
CO-ORDINATORCO-ORDINATOR
• Selects a channel and PAN ID (both 64-bit and 16-bit) to start the network
• Can allow routers and end devices to join the network
• Can assist in routing data
• Cannot sleep--should be mains powered.
ROUTERROUTER
• Must join a ZigBee PAN before it can transmit, receive, or route data
• After joining, can allow routers and end devices to join the network
• After joining, can assist in routing data
• Cannot sleep--should be mains powered.
END DEVICESEND DEVICES
• Must join a ZigBee PAN before it can transmit or receive data.
• Cannot allow devices to join the network.
• Must always transmit and receive RF data through its parent.
• Can enter low power modes to conserve power and can be battery-powered.
OPERATING CHANNELOPERATING CHANNEL Direct-sequence spread spectrum modulation
and operates on a fixed channel. 802.15.4 defines 16 operating channels in the
2.4 GHz frequency band. XBee-PRO modules support 14 of the 16
channel. The coordinator can auto decide which PAN ID
and channel to use. When a channel is crowd , it will change to
another one.

WHAT IS XBee??WHAT IS XBee??
• XBees are small Radio Modules that communicate with each other over radio using Zigbee Protocol.
• It is built on top of 802.15.4 standard.
• They allow for drop-in drop-out mesh topology.
• The modules operate within ISM 2.4 Ghz frequency band and are pin to pin compatible with each other.
