Y6 Y6 arithmetic revision programme (U1 and U2)
The yearly overview is a broad guide to suggested coverage over the course of the academic year.
There are 39 school weeks, one week taken for INSET, leaving 38. Two of the 38 are generally taken up with trips, sports days, concerts and so on, leaving
36. The three ‘blocks’ are each 12 weeks long. Clearly the 12 weeks don’t map directly to terms, they are not intended to.
In each 12-week block there is at least one week for ‘review’. These weeks should be used for focused re-teaching of any topics where gaps have been
identified – through testing, work scrutiny or teacher assessment.
A key principle is that once a concept or skill has been taught, it is revisited in subsequent teaching to ensure it has been retained. This is the
responsibility of the teacher. In the best schools, this manifests itself in either response to marking or teacher-planned sessions which revisit
previous topics.
Block 1 – notes
1. In many schools, Y1 will probably benefit from doing the Y1 transition unit. This is 5 lessons long. It takes key aspects of the Early Learning Goals and
treats them in an Effective Maths context. Therefore, this means Y1 start place value U1 in week 2.
2. + and – U1 contains 14 lessons for Y2. This unit is therefore likely to take 3 weeks to complete.
3. In week 10, KS1 teachers plan their own problem solving lessons. KS2 have lessons planned: × and ÷ U2.
4. In week 11 all year groups identify key areas to develop – or spread this time out over the term.
Where the table header has been highlighted in blue, this indicates that planning will
be provided by Effective Maths. Please see the publication dates (on website) for
details of when resources will be online.

1. In week 10 all year groups identify key areas to develop – or spread this time out over the term.
2. The Y2 lessons from the units on length, volume and mass will be accessible from week 12 of Block 2 to enable Y2 teachers to ensure
coverage of these topics prior to Y2 SATS.
3. Y6 lessons on measures will be accessible via the reasoning revision lessons section.

Statistics
[1] Statistics is not in the current NC for Y1. However, we teach the foundations of statistics in EYFS (sorting, classifying
etc) and it makes sense to develop this further in Y1. The Y1 work on statistics is not about doing Y2 early. It is about
some important fundamental constructs children need to develop further understanding of. These include sorting,
sorting in different ways, the idea of sets and subsets. In terms of graphs, children look at block graphs. Block graphs
are different to bar charts/graphs in that in a block graph/chart each block (usually) represents one. The bar
chart/graph is then a progression from the block graph.
[2] In the current NC, pie charts are for Y6 only. In Effective Maths, they are introduced in Y5. If Effective Maths has
been implemented consistently across the school the key concepts will be grasped by Y5 children and pie charts provide
good opportunities to embed Y5 work on fractions and percentages, as well as links to angles if children get on to
constructing their own pie charts.
