Proposed Amendments to the DPRC Constitution

We held the second reading of these proposed amendments

at the October meeting. The first reading of these proposed

amendments took place at the July membership meeting.

We will take a final vote on these amendments at the

November meeting. Then all of the adopted amendments need

to be forwarded to the state party for its approval.

This notice will serve as the constitutionally required notice

for the adoption of these amendments.

1.  Article 12, Section 3. Change the current language: "This

Constitution is at all time subservient to the Constitution of

the Democratic Party of Wisconsin." The proposed

language states: "This Constitution is subject to the

provisions of the Constitution of the Democratic Party of

Wisconsin."

2.  Article 11, Section 1. Delete "Good and Welfare" from the

monthly order of business agenda.

First Lady in Racine!

First Lady Michelle Obama appeared in Racine on FridayOctober 19, at Memorial Hall. The Coordinated Campaign

Offices in Racine, Kenosha and Elkhorn were besieged for days

with requests for tickets. The first ticket-holders were in line by

5 a.m. on a chilly and dark Friday morning.  Over 2500 people packed the hall to hear and see the very

popular Mrs. Obama deliver a heartwarming message of suppor

for her husband and urge early voting.

A disappointed overflow crowd was seated in the basement

where they could hear, but not see, the festivities. However, this

classy First Lady, learning of their plight, went downstairs to

greet them in person,

Mrs. Obama was introduced by the hard-working and

faithful volunteer and retired teacher Linda Boyle.

Other speakers included Rep. Cory Mason, Congresswoman

and Senate candidate Tammy Baldwin, organizer Claude Luste

and the Rev. Melvin Hargrove. Rep. Bob Turner led the

audience in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Rev. Caro

Baumgartner led the singing of the National Anthem.

What can you do to help November 3-6?

Call the Coordinated Campaign office at 631-9662 to

volunteer for: Canvass shifts: You and a partner will go to selected

homes to encourage voter turnout. Research shows that face-to

-face contact with potential voters increases voter participation

by nearly 4%. In a close election, this can make all the

difference!

Phone banks: Using a prepared script — and your own

personal approach — you can reach voters and help them

make plans for their own voting. Here again, personal contact

is the KEY!

Shifts: Shifts run from 9 am.-noon; noon to 3 p.m.; 3 p.m.

to 6 p.m. Canvass shifts may start earlier on election day;

phone shifts continue until 9 p.m. most days.

Food: Canvassers, phone bankers, campaign organizers

and volunteers are working hard and need food. Hot and cold

meals, beverages and snacks will fuel the effort and keep our

volunteers and organizers happy!

Please do what you can!!

Rest in peace, George McGovern

George McGovern, long-time South Dakota senator and

presidential candidate in 1972, died early Sunday, October 21

at the age of 90. He had been in poor health this past year, and

was admitted to hospice care several days ago. By Saturday

evening, the announcement came that the Senator was

“unresponsive.”

Senator McGovern was a lifelong champion of liberal

causes. His early opposition to the war in Vietnam made him

a hero of progressives and a nominee in 1972 against Richard

Nixon. His record- breaking defeat by Nixon was a double

disaster, since Nixon was then forced from office in 1974 in

the aftermath of the Watergate break -in and connected crimes.

(Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham were early volunteers in his

 presidential campaign.)

That campaign was plagued by controversy and

disorganization from the outset. The Democratic party

leadership at the time was opposed to many of his policies,

including the anti-war stance, and many prominent Democrats

turned down his offer of a vice- presidential place on the

ticket. He finally chose Senator Thomas Eagleton, who

resigned after his treatment for mental illness was disclosed.

The Senator was a decorated World War II bomber pilot

and high school history teacher. He was the son of a South

Dakota preacher, and maintained a home in Mitchel, SD. He

was an early fighter for antipoverty and civil rights

legislation. In later years, he was in demand as a speaker. Healso wrote several books.

In a statement released after his death, the family said,

“We are blessed to know that our father lived

a long, successful and productive life advocating

for the hungry, being a progressive voice for millions

and fighting for peace.”

His books include “What It Means to be a Democrat” and

“Terry: My Daughter’s Life-and-Death Struggle with

Alcoholism.”

Holiday Party, December 10

In lieu of a regular meeting, the

DPRC will celebrate all the season’s

holidays on December 10.

The party starts at 6 p.m. a

Infusino’s Restaurant, 3225 Rapids

Drive in Racine. Entertainment will be provided

as well as the usual Infusino feast

and cash bar.

In the spirit of all the holidays, you can bring two

nonperishable food items for the local Food Bank.

OR, you can bring a book or two for the Racine Public

Library. George McGovern’s books might be a good idea (see

article at left), or a progressive title of your choice.

What are the Stakes … Supreme Court

For those of you — and there are probably SOME — who

believe that “This is just another election; it doesn’t really matter

who wins” …

There will be two, possibly three, retirements in the so-called

“liberal wing” of the court. A Romney presidency will be able to

appoint replacements, and you can be sure Romney will not

consider a moderate or progressive.

If conservatism is defined as resistance to change, “there’s

nothing conservative about the four justices on the right, who

have significantly dismantled significant parts of Congress’

attempts to enforce the Fourteenth Amendment (regarding due

process and equal protection), and who have invalidated key

parts of the Anti-Discrimination Act, the Americans With

Disabilities Act, and the Violence Against Women Act,” said

Laurence Tribe, a distinguished judge and Harvard law professor.

Jeffrey Toobin, an author, lawyer and analyst for the New

Yorker, said “The two newest appointees, Samuel Alito and John

Roberts ’79, are consciously seeking to achieve a specific

conservative agenda. “I think this is a project that conservatives have had—to

overrule Roe v. Wade, to get rid of affirmative action, to expand

the use of the death penalty, to expand executive power, toreduce the separation between church and state,” said Toobin.

“It’s a project, and Roberts and Alito are part of the project.”

A “Romney court” would feature anti-choice, anti-affirmative

action, looser death penalty requirements, more executive power

and the dismantling of our historic church/state separation.

What are the Stakes … Other Legislation

Scott Walker isn’t the only Republican who works

against the rights of organized labor. Dismantling of public

employee bargaining rights is the reason Walker is now a

rising star on the right.

In a Romney administration, and especially if the

Democrats can’t hold the Senate and make significant

progress in the House, you’ll see more than bargaining

rights bite the dust. The aim is to abolish unions entirely, and so infamous “right to work [for less]” laws will be

enacted.

What will happen to public school funding? We’ll

certainly see the destruction of Medicare. The Romney-

Ryan plan puts Medicare at the mercy of Scott Walker and

his ilk. With the advice of former Bush 43 neo -con advisers,

they’re proposing outrageous increases in defense spending,

and advocating war with Iran. Good- bye federal funding for

Planned Parenthood. Do you know what the “personhood

amendment” is? And let’s not forget Big Bird.

The list goes on.
