Most famous Mauryan ruler was Ashoka. He was the first ruler who spread his messages to people through

inscriptions. Ashoka’s inscriptions were written in Prakrit.

Ashoka’s war in Kalinga

After the Kalinga war, Ashoka was horrified to see the bloodshed. He decided to quit war. He is the only ruler who gave up war after winning one.

HW: Go through the box given on page no. 71 explaining- Ashoka’s inscription describing the Kalinga war.

What was Ashoka’s DhammaDhamma is the Prakrit word for Sanskrit term Dharma.  Dhamma is a set of edicts that formed a policy of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka.For Ashoka, Dhamma was a way of life and was based on a high degree of social ethics and  civic responsibility .

Dhamma inscriptions on rock pillars

Ashoka’s Dhamma did not involve worship of a god. He appointed Dhamma Mahamattas to spread his message of Dhamma. He got his messages inscribed on rocks and pillars. He did various social services for the people’s welfare.
