Creating my double page spread

Kerrang example:

Page 2: Dps screenshots

I created a double page document in InDesign and placed and fitted the image I wanted to use as my central image so that it filled the first of the two pages, like the Kerrang example.

I then used a completely different font to the others I had used for the header so that it stood out and made sure it covered the first page and part of the second.

I used a drop capital at the start of my article to make a point that that was where it started and to draw the readers’ attention to the body copy.

I used a small font to add page numbers, alongside the name of the magazine which Kerrang also did.

I added the body copy in columns on the second page, incorporating the interview into the text rather than a Q and A format. This I felt was more sophisticated and appealed to older teenagers. I also added the pull quote, keeping the colour purple from the contents page. The pull quote is one of the first things noticed after the header and should draw the reader’s attention to wanting to read on and find out the full story.

I then opened another image from the same photoshoot to use as a graphic feature, in Firework so that I could crop it to make it the right size and cut out any unnecessary background.

I placed the image in the top right corner of the second page.

I also used a by-line, including the name of the writer of the article as this creates more of a connection between writers and reader and creates familiarity, leading to brand loyalty to they are more likely to buy the magazine again.

I placed a black outline around the graphic feature to make it stand out more and used anchorage text as a caption for it. I also added the ‘check it out’ flash giving information about the band’s music and social networking contacts as my target audience would often use these sites and would want to follow the band to find out more information and keep up to date.
