As Earth Day on April 22nd approaches, the
following six green tips are easy things you
can do in the house to save the Mother Earth
and be a little more green and healthy!
Tip #1 – Turn off the lights (and AC!) when
not needed, even as you go from room to
room in the course of your day (or evening)
and especially when you leave the house.
As much as 20% of a home’s energy use
comes from light bulbs. Also unplugging
electronics and appliances when not is use helps reduce energy.
Tip #2 – Wash clothes in cold
water (the new cold-water deter-
gents do the job just fine).
According to the US Department
of Energy, a washing machine
uses up to 90 percent of its ener-
gy to simply heat the water in a
laundry load, and the higher the
temperature, the greater the cost
to the environment; it will also
make your clothes last longer.
Also clean the lint filter in your
gas or electric clothes dryer;
tests have shown that keeping
the lint trap clean may provide savings of up to $34 in energy
costs each year. Better yet, use a clothes ‘tree’ or indoor drying
rack and keep the dryer shut off.
Tip #3 - Switch to green, natural household cleaners to reduce air
pollution both indoors and out, minimizing exposure to both asth-
ma and allergy triggers as well as chemicals that can be harmful
to your health. Forego cleaning products for plain old hot water
and white vinegar – the ultimate green living product or google
how to make your own natural all purpose cleaner, bleach,
softscrub, windex, toilet cleaner, etc. Most department stores also
carry lines of easily identifiable environmentally friendly clean-
ing products that are less toxic and come in recyclable packaging.
Tips #4 - Take control of your mailbox and subscribe to Catalog
Choice (www.catalogchoice.org), a free service that lets you
communicate your mail preferences to companies and reduces
the number of unwanted catalogues in your mailbox. Utilize the
online bill pay options provided by most credit card, gas and
electric, and cable companies.
Tip #5 - Choose responsible vacations Sustainable tourism dol-
lars directly benefit the environment and the communities you
visit. View a list of vacation options and get more information
about the positive impacts of responsible tourism
(www.sustainabletrip.org). Also visit www.terrapass.com to
offset your carbon footprint from flying and driving.
Tip #6 - Don’t Dump, Donate. Pounds of carbon emissions are
reduced when people get/buy second hand items while keeping
the landfills smaller. Take items to a school or orphanage, a char-
ity that accepts donations, or list them on Freecycle.org.

Many have probably heard that there are only few countries in the world that have bioluminescent bays, as they are quite rare and fragile. But you are in luck as Jamaica is one of those with a phos-phorescent lagoon just near Montego Bay in Fa-mouth. These incredible waters are made even more spectacular in that you can swim in them and watch the aggitated bacteria light up blue all around you in the water. The best thing to do, since the bacteria can only be seen at night, is to stay on or near the lagoon and then take out a boat to swim. The Glistening waters restaurant does allow people to eat at their restaurant and then the tour is only $12.50, but the food is not great, and the boat overcrowded (the normal tour is around $25). So it is better to stay at Fisherman’s Inn (www.fishermansinnjamaica.com) right on the bay and then go out with their captain, Desmond James. When we went the other weekend, we had a private boat tour, and he gave us a great history of the area. Call 310-6891/855-7880 to book a tour, no need to stay at the Inn, you can drive to the Bay, and Desmond can still take you out. The experience is magical and not one to be missed!
