PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS:
Primary professional interests are in the research and study of Bilingual Education,
English Language Learners (ELL’s), Technology Integration in Second Language
Instruction, Distance Education, and Minority Populations. A major professional goal is
to impact the quality of education English Language Learners receive in public schools
throughout grade school and higher education institutions. Preferred teaching methods
include using active learning, co-teaching concepts, cooperative learning, role-playing in
the classroom, and community-service learning. Preferred administrative methods
include collaborative approaches for building genuine and effective work teams/climate.

Texas A&M San Antonio, August 2011 to February 2012. Full-time faculty teaching
undergraduate and graduate courses in Bilingual Education and ESL for the School of
Education and Kinesiology.

Colorado State University-Global Campus, 2010-October 2013. Primary responsibilities
include teaching undergraduate from the General Education writing and composition
courses to graduate courses for teachers specializing in the field of teaching and working

English Language Arts/ESL teacher, English Language Arts Department, Paul
Leal/Los Cuates Middle School, Los Fresnos CISD, 2003-2004. Primary roles included,
serving as the primary ESL teacher on all LPAC committees, which evaluated and
assessed student progress and placement, collaboration with Brownsville ISD and the use
of varied language assessment materials in addition to the existing district-adopted
assessment tool, known as the IDEA proficiency exam, working with administration to
design a core curriculum for ESL learners which included Spanish, Math, Social Studies,
and Reading, as opposed to a strict intensive ESL curriculum, integrating the use of
media and the development of cognitive knowledge to enhance student learning,
scheduling regular visits to the technology lab and library so students could use
mainstream video to develop their prior knowledge in content areas to help them become
active readers and better writers, complementing instructional strategies to develop a set
of test-taking strategies which resulted in one hundred percent of my English Language
Arts students passing the Writing component of the TAKS state exam, receiving training
in the latest Protocol Language Assessment Procedures for English Language Learners.
Student populations on campus included: recent immigrants, intermediate English
Language Learners, Advanced English Language Learners, Migrant students, and
mainstream monolingual English speakers. Received training in RPTE testing, IDEA
Language Assessment, and Technology Training on Library Reference Databases.
Reading Specialist, University of Texas-Texas Southmost College, Dr. Hilda Silva/Vice
President of Student Affairs, Maria Elena Valdes/Learning Assistance Director, January-
May 2003.Primary duties included: supervision of reading tutors, training of tutors in the
necessary components for students to pass the Reading component of the THEA,
collaboration with department chairs in the Math, History and English departments to
promote student attendance and to improve reading strategies for all struggling students,
creating original writing workshops to help students pass the multiple choice section of
the THEA. While at the Student Affairs division, additional tasks undertaken included: I
collaborating with reading experts to create a list of on-line web pages and reading skills
tips to help students become active readers, creating mock reading exams for students to
practice test-taking strategies, promoting the use of video and internet technology to help
students build up their cognitive knowledge in areas such as history and government to
help students better prepare for the reading sections of the THEA. Student passing rates
for the THEA exam, for the reading component, increased under the changes
implemented as Reading Specialist.
English Language Arts Teacher, South Texas I.S.D. Business & Technology Academy,
Jeff Hembree/Principal, 2000-2001. Primary duties included: Teaching English 4
Advanced Placement, English I, English II Pre-Advanced Placement courses, and English
as a Second Language, co-writing and revising the curriculum guide for the four levels of
English at the campus; this guide included reading lists, vocabulary lists and writing
performance goals.
Developmental Reading and Writing Instructor, Texas State Technical College, Billy
Becker/Department Chair, 1998-2000. Primary duties included: teaching remedial
reading and writing courses to help technical and vocational students prepare to pass the
THEA exam, using Plato Software to improve students’ basic writing skills and having
students take practice reading tests to help them develop basic reading skills such as:
scanning, active reading, summarizing, inferencing, and drawing conclusions, developing
students’ writing skills through basic and intermediate writing courses.
English as a Second Language Teacher, Brownsville Independent School District,
Johnny Pineda/Principal, 1996-1998. Primary duties included: teaching ESL I, English I
and ESL II. Received training in Computer-Assisted Curriculum Instruction, guided
students through the use of technology to assist ESL learning and monitored their
progress, while at the same time modifying the curriculum to assist their learning needs,
administered the LAS (Language Assessment Skills) exam to all ESL students, and
served on LPAC committees.
Spanish teacher, Groesbeck Independent School District, Curtis Rhodes/Principal, 1995-
1996. Primary duties included: working in a rural community of 3000 residents as the
Spanish Department Chair, teaching Spanish I &II, as Spanish for non-Speakers of the
Language (SSL) courses, presenting multicultural events presented for the school board,
such as 5 de mayo, the Battle of Puebla, and the renowned Day of the Dead, otherwise
known, as All Saints Day, creating the first-ever Spanish Club which, for the first time in
the district’s history, taking district students funded by the club’s fundraisers to San
Antonio for a cultural experience, where students had to practice their Basic Interpersonal
Communication Skills (BICS) at the world famous Market Square in San Antonio.
English Language Arts and Reading teacher, Santa Maria Independent School District,
Bobby Chapa/Principal, 1994-1995. Primary duties included: teaching English Language
Arts and Reading to migrant students who during the academic year worked in the
cucumber fields to help support the needs of their families, making home visits, which
led me to discover the poor living conditions of my students, many of whom had no
electricity nor running water, creating learning centers, so that my students would have
ample time to experience as many areas related to literacy, including: a reading corner, a
grammar center, a writer’s group, and a speaker’s circle.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
Currently serving as Program Coordinator for the Bilingual Education and ESL
Department.
(2014-2015)Prepared a program review document for the 7th
year Legislative Review of
the Master of Science in Bilingual Education. This document required collaboration from
institutional departments and time sensitive data collection and interpretation of program
Institutional Effectiveness Results.
Secured funding from Laura Miller, Marketing Officer at Frost Bank in San Antonio,
Texas to donate $400 towards the travel expenses of TAMUSA-BESO (Bilingual
Education Student Organization) officers to attend the NABE conference in San Diego,
California.
Secured funding from Sherry Layman, San Antonio Public Library Foundation
member, to donate $100 towards travel expenses of TAMUSA-BESO (Bilingual
Education Student Organization) officers to attend for the NABE conference in San
Diego, California.
Secured waiver of registration fees for all four (4) TAMUSA-BESO officers from the
NABE president, Dr. Leo Gomez. TAMUSA-BESO officers were offered the
opportunity to volunteer at the NABE conference in exchange for waiver of fees totaling
$1720. TAMUSA-BESO officers opted to raise funds for the registration fees in order to
be able to attend multiple and concurrent conference sessions.
Awarded Research Grant ($500) by the Southwest Teaching Learning Conference
and co-authored with Dr. Mishaleen Allen, Models for Success Initiative (MSI):
Professional Learning Communities within San Antonio ISD Cohorts (2 and 3)
500 Years of Latino Histories National Endowment for the Humanities grant ($3000
funded). Collaborated with the Arts & Sciences librarian, Arts &
Sciences faculty and to feature published art and research on the topic of Latino
History.
City of Elsa, Mira Grant/ Grant Director and City Librarian/ Hilda Molina. Created
original curriculum for an Adult Learning and Literacy Center still in existence and
selected materials, promoting the center, teaching adult literacy, citizenship courses, adult
continuing education, and technology instruction.
INTERNATIONAL WORK EXPERIENCE
Valle Hermoso, Tampaulipas, Mexico, English Intensive Course for 10 weeks, 1994.
Wrote and created original curriculum to teach an intensive ten Week course of English
for the commercial setting in Valle Hermoso, Tamaulipas. Enrollment included twenty
students, who later came to be gainfully employed in the new maquiladoras because of
their basic communication skills in English, as a result of my course.

This year’s conference includes: Secretary of State Carlos Cascos, Chief Public
Defender for Bexar County, Michael Lee Young and Gallery Directory and Art
Professor, Alejandro Macias.
This annual mini-conference is hosted in collaboration with Deirdre McDonald and with
the support and guidance of Dr. Josephine Sosa-Fey in an effort to promote research
among undergraduate and graduate presentations.
In 2014, the conference led to the inclusion of two guest speakers, Lance Curtright and
Shelly Layman.
In 2013, developed a conference which included the very first two keynote speakers,
Xavier Garza, children’s author and Norma Scarcliff, Human Resources
administrator for San Antonio ISD.
Well over 50 undergraduate and graduate students participated both as attendees and
presenters.

SERVICE in DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION on a state
and national level
2014-2015 BTLPT virtual committee member to review questions and
responses for the BTLPT for ETS and TEA.
I attended a week long Trainer of Trainers Dual Language Institute on July
2013 hosted at the Hyatt in San Antonio, Texas. I was invited by the
president of NABE, Dr. Leo Gomez to share in the exchange of
current research trends occurring in dual language programs
across the state and the United States.
External Evaluator
Dallas ISD-August 2014: Provided professional development for dual language
teachers.
During this 2013, Dr. Leo Gomez, the president of the National Association of
Bilingual Education (NABE) asked me to visit dual language campuses to
evaluate effectiveness of programs. Additionally, I was invited to share the work
TAMUSA is enveloped in to promote the university, the administration, the
faculty and the students. My work as an external evaluator for dual language
programs adds to the state and national conversation on Bilingual Education.
2007-2008 Texas Education Agency and State Board of Educator’s Certification
Committee Member
Reviewed the existing Texas Oral Proficiency Test (TOPT) exam, which Spanish
Secondary pre-service teachers take as well as Bilingual Elementary pre-service teachers.
Reviewed, discussed, designed, and approved the framework for the Bilingual Target
Language Proficiency Test (BTLPT) test future pre-service teachers will take as of Fall
2008. This committee also reviewed each of the domains under this test framework to
ensure compliance with all of the language competencies, including reading, writing,
speaking and listening skills. Additionally, each of the competencies, under each domain
within the test framework, was reviewed, reworded, or revamped in order to meet the
growing demands of pre-service teachers seeking bilingual certification. This service
was an extremely prestigious opportunity, given that only eleven individuals from
throughout the state were asked to serve.
