Wedding traditions vary worldwide depending on culture, religion, social status, and country. In Riyadh, weddings usually begin from 11 pm, but the bride does not appear before midnight (although stated otherwise on the invitations). After the bride appears with her groom, they cut the cake and take pictures, then the groom leaves and the bride leaves shortly after him. The guests then have dinner and begin to make their way to the exit, therefore marking the end of a typical wedding in Riyadh. Although weddings do not last more than approximately two hours, people spend tremendous amounts of money for such a short period of time, and the bride does not

Simpler Weddingseven spend time with her guests for more than half an hour!

A wedding is simply defined as a ceremony in which two people are united. It is meant to be a beautiful occasion that joins two individuals together for a lifetime. The bride and groom should be able to spend time with their guests; after all, it is their night. People should remember and keep in mind that a wedding is a ceremony; what they should focus on, and what really matters, is the marriage. Consider investing more time and money on the actual marriage rather than spending everything on one night.

Late ZaffaThumbs Down to...

Thumbs Up to...Early Weddings

For many generations we have become accustomed to the idea of attending a wedding that is so unbelievably late that we end up going home by sunrise! However things are finally starting to turn around, weddings are becoming earlier and earlier and there are even weddings being held in the afternoon. Guests are finding this particularly convenient as they end their evening at a decent hour and leave with satisfied smiles on their faces. We hope this trend not only continues, but also becomes the new norm.

Despite the new generation trying to introduce the idea of early weddings into our society, some still choose to plan their nights extremely late. Guests end up waiting all night for the bride and groom to walk down the aisle so they can go home and catch some sleep. Some even choose to skip dinner as the night reaches along the hours of 3 and 4 am. This ridiculous notion of a wedding must be changed for good as the guests end up getting irritated and the bride doesn’t get to enjoy much of her long planned and awaited night.

6. HARVEY NICHOLS FASHION SHOW:Harvey Nichols sponsored a fashion show on March 9th, highlighting British designers such as Alexander McQueen, Jonathan Saunders, and Thomas Wylde, among many others. The event took place at the British Ambassador’s residence in Riyadh. Saudi aspiring designers, fashion bloggers and eager businessmen all attended the event that utilized fashion as a median for a larger dialogue between Saudi Arabia and the UK. The fashion show was the pre-launch event for the “Best of Britain” exhibition that was held on March 10-12 at Nayyara Convention Center. It was organized by Dunia InterMedia, with support from the UK Trade and Investment, the British Council and the Arab-British Chamber of Commerce. The event showcased British luxury automobiles, beauty products, leather goods, leading fashion brands, and education and training services in the creative industries. As part of the three-day event, workshops were held for young Saudi men and women in the design and fashion industry with creative industry experts from the London College of Fashion and Brighton University on how to turn their creativity into an actual business. The developing Arts and Culture scene in Saudi Arabia has highly benefited from the knowledge and know-how of UK education and training colleges.

5. JAPAN FASHION WEEK:Riyadh’s ‘premiere luxury department store,’ Harvey Nichols, launched a rather exceptional fashion showcase at the Al Faisaliah Tower on February 25th. This two-week exhibition featured the works of 14 Japanese designers and promoted quite a versatile selection of items, all of which ranged from clothing apparel and accessories to jewelry, home décor and even stationary! Riyadh was in for a real treat as it was the first time Japanese fashion has ever been featured in the Kingdom. Hosted by HN, the talents of the Creative Japan Fashion Fair took inventiveness to a whole new level. This platform was meant to invite designers and fashion enthusiasts alike to test reactions here in the Gulf, mainly because Japan is said to be very eager to facilitate a bond with Saudi Arabia in terms of business. Jetro Export Specialist, Tomoaki Kuroiwa agrees that Saudi Arabia’s knowledge on fashion has advanced progressively. So it seemed like the perfect time to introduce Japan’s creative vision here in Riyadh. He feels the Kingdom is always looking for something new and fresh.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A SAUDI WEDDING

Weddings are a joyful occasion all over the world; people celebrate them in different ways and practice their own rituals; however at the end of the day it all comes down to the bride and the groom, and the fact that it is their special day.

Every country has its own traditions and beliefs when it comes to weddings. In India, for example, wedding celebrations last for a couple of days. In Jamaica, the entire village celebrates wedding ceremonies together, and in Norway the wedding cake is made of bread and cheese! These are only a few examples of wedding traditions and rituals that amaze us. Here in Saudi it is no different; we have are own traditions and rituals that we celebrate with and are happy to have. If you are a newcomer, and have been invited to your first Saudi wedding, keep reading and find out about our wedding traditions just to be prepared.

You receive your wedding invitation about three weeks before the wedding, and you get excited about attending and experiencing a new culture; however, a lot of you could have many questions regarding what to wear, when to go, should you get the lovely couple a gift or is it not customary to do so here in Saudi? Now, let’s get you prepared.

Settling In

Useful Information

DESTINATION RIYADH18

INVITATIONS: To begin with, the invitations are usually personalized for each guest and you will find a small entrance card to show at the door before you enter the wedding hall. Of course if the wedding is less formal, where the family has the ceremony at a private property like the family home, no entry card would be needed.

WHAT TO WEAR? Now comes the bigger question: what to wear! Should you be conservative, simple, or go over the top when it comes to your outfit? Well that depends on the wedding itself; usually weddings in Saudi are very fancy and people try to be as glamorous as they possibly can, so your best and safest choice would be to wear your favorite formal dress and beautify your neck, ears and hands with jewelry. The dress you wear also depends on the timing and location of the wedding. If it is an afternoon wedding, your best option would be a simple classy dress and light makeup. As for the location, if the wedding is taking place in one of the fancy wedding halls then imagine yourself going to the Oscars.w If the wedding is for both men and women, and is to take place at a private home, then your dress should be a bit more on the conservative side, or depending on the family and their own traditions.

The choice is yours; just keep in mind to schedule an appointment at least one week ahead of time especially if the wedding is during wedding season. When you schedule your appointment, make sure it is sometime in the afternoon because it tends to get crowded at the salon after 6 pm. Many makeup artists here tend to get carried away, maybe thinking “the more the merrier,” so an important tip for you is to not feel shy to tell the makeup artist that you want fewer colors on your face!

GIFTS: After deciding on the outfit there comes the matter of the gift. Commonly in other countries it is customary and in fact expected to buy the newlyweds a gift and present it to them on their wedding day, but in Saudi that is not a necessity. At least not on their wedding day; usually if you are close enough to the bride you will be invited to her bridal shower, in which close friends and family give their gifts, or you can send them a gift a week or so before the wedding. However it is not customary to bring a gift to the wedding ceremony.

TIMING: A typical wedding in Riyadh supposedly begins at around 10 pm (according to the timing stated on the invitation), but guests do not arrive before 11 or midnight, and the bride does not make an appearance before 1 am. As soon as the bride and groom make their appearance, dinner is served and the wedding is more or less over. Nowadays, the wedding scene began to change in terms of timing; afternoon and early evening weddings have become a trend, and we hope it is a long-lasting one!

DURING THE WEDDING: As expected, upon your arrival at any wedding, you walk around, meet and greet friends and acquaintances. There should be around an hour or so before the bride walks down the aisle; during that hour music will be playing non-stop, guests can dance, snack on the chocolates and pastries provided on each

table, and socialize. When the bride and groom walk down the aisle, women who cover may wear their abayas, and watch the beautiful ceremony unfold. After the bride and groom walk down the aisle, they take pictures with family and friends, cut the cake, and enjoy the rest of the night celebrating their wedding.

TIPS!-You may kiss the bride after she walks down the aisle, but NOT the groom!-To avoid the crowd of women getting their abayas before the groom appears, it would be convenient to bring a scarf or shawl with you and keep it with you.-When you are offered snacks on a tray by waitresses at the wedding, it is NOT offensive to say no.-Take a nap on the day of the wedding, trust us you will thank us for it.

So look your best and enjoy the experience of a Saudi wedding!

Marriage is essentially the official union between man and women, although it has evolved over the centuries, increasing in complexity as societies have become more sophisticated and civilized. The same can be said about wedding traditions and customs, which vary greatly between cultures, ethnic groups, religions, countries, and even regions, but sadly, they too have been taking a back seat to more modern ideas.

Although it is understandable that we, as humans, always want to adapt to the ever changing world around us, but at the same time, we as Arabs, and especially Saudis, are fortunate to have a rich culture which dates back more than a hundred years. So why not proudly hold on to and revive our authentic traditions and embrace some of the beautiful rituals that are passed down with them?

Since wedding season is upon us, let’s go for a walk down memory lane and take a closer look at traditionally arranged Najdi weddings and customs. Some of these rituals are very old fashioned, therefore nearly impossible to replicate, others are so unique; they can give your wedding celebrations that special touch you’ve been looking for.

How it all begins

It all begins when the groom’s family hears about a respectable family who has a daughter of marrying age. The groom (alMoris), his father, and family will visit the bride’s (Alarous) father and ask for her hand in marriage. Upon agreeing, the women come into the picture. The ladies of the groom’s family visit the bride’s house to meet her mother and relatives. The two families get better acquainted with each other, however they do not meet the bride herself. Surprisingly, it was customary that the bride remains oblivious to the whole situation, up until the wedding night, although they say that she surely sensed the simple wedding arrangements and preparations going around in the house.

The wedding night

The bride gets ready by dressing up in a traditional, modest long-sleeved dress cinched at the waist called a Kirtah, with long underpants “Sirwal” underneath. The make-up consisted of a simple application of black Kohol to her eyes, and Derram to her lips, (a small wood peeling that is dipped

in water and patted on lips to give a dark reddish hue). Her hair is brushed with a comb dipped or sprayed with Rehan infused water (a fragrant herb), then parted vertically and braided down both sides of her face. Afterwards, she is perfumed with special and authentic Oud oil and rose water.

Finally, she is accessorized with simple gold jewelry, and covered with a Bisht, the traditional black cloak Arab men wear, made from wool and embroidered with gold thread. She covers her face with a light veil. When she is ready, her father or her brother escort her to her “bridal” room, where she is accompanied by AlRab’eyah, a women who stays by her side and keeps her company.

The celebration goes on outside, the guests sing and dance to the beat of Teeran and Dufoof (musical hand-held instruments similar to drums and tambourine). The men celebrate as well, by dancing the traditional Saudi dance called AlAardah and AlSamrri, followed by the dinner feast, mainly rice and meat. When they are finished the Groom heads towards his Bride’s bedroom and enters while the singing and dancing

Page 25: DR Issue 2

continue on the ladies side. It is said that the “scared “ bride holds on to AlRab’eyah when the groom enters, and the Rab’eyah doesn’t leave her side until the groom hands her Al-Ftashah (an amount of money), then she gets up and leaves. But not before she gives the bride (whose face is still covered) a piece of Cardamom (Hail) and Clove (Mismar) to pop into her mouth.

7 days of celebration:

The celebrations go on traditionally for 7 days (eventually with time, they declined down to 3). The day after the wedding the bride is dressed up again, this time with a fancier Thobe-like dress called AlDurra’ah, and rich gold. She then awaits the Groom’s family who come to congratulate her and present her with gifts. Over the next few days she changes her clothes and jewelry as the joyful celebrations continue. On the last day, she goes to her husband’s house where the groom’s family traditionally gives her another party called AlTehwaal, which literally means “transforming”, meaning that she transformed from her single life with her family to her married life with her husband.

Jewlery:

AlRashrash is an elaborate and heavy necklace made of small gold coins and chains linked together in a stylish design. It had many names like Kursi Fahad (Fahad’ chair which referred to the late King Fahad), a necklace so exquisite it reached the bride’s knees!

AlHaamah is a specially designed accessory for the head consisting of small gold designs and chains forming a “cap” on the bride’s head. The AlSurooh is more detailed chains which continue downwards framing her face and reaching her shoulders.

On her hands, the bride wears, AlKaf, a beautiful bracelet with stylish chains running down the front of the hand, each connected to rings worn on her fingers. Ghawayish are numerous gold bangles on her wrists, and to complete the look, she wears an AlHizam, a wide belt made from the same embellished gold details.

The beginning of forever can never be too perfect. We know how exciting yet stressful planning a wedding can be, so we decided to ask the experts. In this section we profile two industry experts and ask their opinion on what it takes to plan the perfect wedding. While brides are stressed with huge to-do lists, wedding planners often have a more objective outlook on how to plan for the big day. We hope their feedback provides you with ideas and inspiration for your wedding.

Last year Toni Breiss, the well known Lebanese wedding planner, introduced his services to the Saudi and Bahraini markets by teaming up with his local agent Gladys Hajj Al Turkmani. Toni and his team can turn your wedding into a Majestic experience. Here is what Toni had to say:

1. What is your experience in this industry? - I first opened my company 11 years ago in Paris, three years ago in Beirut and a year ago in Riyadh. For Saudi Arabia and Bahrain we opened in collaboration with Gladys Hajj Al Turkmani as the exclusive agent for LEVEL by Toni Breiss Paris. My company has grown throughout the years

and is now considered a big success among event planning companies in Europe.

2. What are some examples of wedding sizes, themes, and locations that you have worked on?- The largest event that we worked on was a 3,500 people event in Abu Dhabi. At this event we built the venue, including the architecture and design. We also managed all of our suppliers and employees in order to streamline all the work and avoid any conflict. The event concept generally reflects the client’s personality. For example, for a very creative client, we built a platform in the sea and placed table elevations for the DJ and Cake. And for another client we built a catwalk inside the dance floor. We are dedicated to surpass client’s expectations and deliver unique events with distinguished style and exceptional themes.

3. Can you help brides stay on a budget?-Part of our job is to help the bride stay within her allocated budget by guiding her in any matter related to the wedding, e.g.

which dress to pick, the invitation cards, and the giveaways.

4. Can you give one or two examples of successful give away ideas that have worked in the past?- Examples of giveaways could be a decorative Murano glass piece, or a luxurious candle, as long as they are related to the theme.

Young and energetic, Sarah Al Dabbagh, the founder of Lace Events, has what it takes to turn your dream wedding into a reality. Since her childhood, Sarah has always been passionate about ceremonies and celebrations. She spent her time creating wedding scrapbooks and the first wedding she planned was during her last year of college, after which she realized that nothing could beat the joy of turning people’s wishes and dreams into reality. From then on, her love flourished into passion, and then came Lace. Lace provides an exclusive relationship with clients by creating an accessible and friendly atmosphere that turns the whole planning experience into a memorable journey. With just approximately two years of experience in the industry, Lace planned 15 events including seven weddings, each varying from 100 to 500 guests. 1. What makes you different from other wedding planners?I believe that extravagance may be manifested in elegance and refinement by combining the service and style of the West with the enchanting traditions and hospitality of the East. I ensure an exclusive relationship with my clients in hopes of altering the concept of planning from a chaotic routine to an unforgettable, heart-felt journey of bringing dreams into reality.

2. What is the trend this wedding season?Acute attention to detail is very trendy today. I’m in love with labelled seats for the bride and groom, such as “Mr.Right” and “Mrs.Always Right.” These little details are what make a celebration warm and heartfelt. I also love to see new and fun entertainment acts that are interactive and will help get the guests pumped up for the night’s festivities. I once booked a magician to entertain the guests during the reception!

3. Can you help brides stay on a budget? By giving your planner sufficient time to plan and investigate, you will be amazed at all the costs that can be cut. It is important for the

Pay attention to the invitation; if it indicates anything like formal dress, black tie or cocktail.

It all depends on the location; if it is an outdoor wedding you go simple with the right shoes (wedges if it’s grass and flats if it’s on sand), if it’s a formal ballroom then go with dressy shoes.

Never ever ever ever wear white to a wedding or try to outshine the bride!

Avoid colors that are too loud and patterns that are too wild. Either one of these things will make you stand out in a bad way.

Weather is a key factor that determines what you are going to wear. You should choose clothing that’s appropriate to the season in order to be comfortable.

Less is more; simple make up and a simple hairdo!

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue; your shoes can be all of the above!

Being a shoe addict, choosing my wedding shoes were the most important thing to me.

I was torn between a pair of Manolos and Louboutins but my heart spoke to a limited edition Le Silla out of 50 pairs in the world (my lucky number was 33). Inspired by fairy tales, those shoes looked like Cinderellas’ so what you need to do is let your heart (and feet) speak to your shoes!

If you are in the fashion industry, you will want to remember the name Trickponi. This unique company is essentially a fashion showroom representing both local and international designers.

TrickponiBy Hana Jazzar

Partners Sara Alajroush and Serene Xefos came up with the idea after noticing the boom in retail art and design, but the lack of attention to wholesale luxury fashion. Hoping to introduce a new concept to the Middle Eastern designer market, they serve as a platform for both designers and buyers by embracing emerging and international talents and sharing their unique designs with buyers in the Middle East.

Trickponi support their designers by extending their services to include customized aspects such as managing branding, press, and social media, as well as arranging events and showcases for buyers. Ultimately, their efforts result in giving their brands more exposure to luxury boutiques and high-end department stores in the Middle East.

As for the buyer’s advantage, Trickponi bridges the gap between local and international new designers on the scene and buyers. They bring the designer collections to the buyer’s doorstep rather than having them trot the globe looking for unique brands for their stores. Trickponi is also happy to welcome buyers by appointment to either of

their showrooms in Riyadh and Jeddah. The idea is a true testament to their vision and passion: offering high quality, trendy, and eclectic styles as well as beautiful vintage jewelry. Their client list at the moment includes: Shosh New York, Salma Redwan and L’atelier Nawbar.

UNFORGETTABLE Wedding GiveawaysBy Halah Gandeel

10You are almost done with your wedding to-do list, everything is in place and going according to plan. You are ready to share your dream day with your beloved family and friends. All that’s left now is to give away something your guest will remember your night by. Here are a few ideas you might want to consider:

1 THE GIFT OF FLAVORFor a gift with so much flavor that your guests will surly enjoy, create your own special mix of herbed olive oil. All you need to do is gather fresh herbs of your choice, wash them and let them dry thoroughly. Then put a few of those leaves inside each giveaway bottle and pour the olive oil into the mix. The trick is to prepare this two weeks in advance so that it will be infused with plenty of flavor in time for your big day.

Page 43: DR Issue 2

2 THE COOKIE BUFFET Your friends have been complimenting you on your cookies for years. It is time to share them with many more people. Bake a few of your favorite flavors and be as creative as you like. Then fill some serving jars and add them to the buffet with take away bags so your guests can pick and mix their bag, then seal it with a customized label.

3 TAKE AWAY FLOWERSThe music has stopped, and guests are starting to leave. Your long planned wedding night might be over but the flowers that you worked so hard to choose and arrange are still very fresh. Therefore, it might be a good idea to turn your flower centerpieces into giveaways by arranging them in small separate vases that guests could snatch from the table at the end of the night.

4 MINT TO BEYour guests have just finished their lavish dinner and now they are digging for a mint in order to freshen up and get back on that dance floor. Surprise them by printing small messages on each mint and go the extra mile by packing them in decorative jars that compliment your theme so your guests can take them home and use them as a display.

7CANDY BARS OF CHILDHOODDon’t want to display your childhood photos in a slideshow? You can still do that but with a fresh new twist! Purchase some of your most beloved chocolate bars, remove their wrappings and instead wrap them with both bride and groom's childhood personal photos that you can print using your own printer at home. This way you can share your most cherished moments and give your guests a chocolate delight at the same time.

5 A POP OF CAKEWe all know that the wedding cake you so carefully selected most probably will end up being sent to your own families. Why not share the love with little balls of cake covered in frosting, decorative glitter, sprinkles with endless packaging options to choose from. Let your imagination go wild and consider creating them in little miniatures of brides and grooms or maybe even your themed flowers. You can order these pops of heaven from almost any cake shop in your town.

10 THE WHITE MACAROON Let’s face it, Macaroon’s popularity is booming like crazy these days and everyone wants in on a piece of these delicious savories. So why not give your guests a sweet treat by sending them off with little bags of white macaroons. You can add your individual touch by sticking your personalized label to mark your wedding day.

BENIHANAThe most famous Japanese steak-house in the world

The idea behind Japanese cuisine is combining nutrition and entertainment, the chef literally puts on a show while he is cooking, and Benihana in Riyadh delivers exactly that. Watching Chef Edward place the fresh vegetables and perfectly cut meat, fish and chicken on the grill and hearing that sound when they first touch the grill got my appetite going. Also watching the chef flip that first empty egg shell into his hat while throwing around a spatula and a knife and simultaneously catching them at the same time caught my attention just until he put grilled veggies on my plate.

The Tenderloin Steak was deliciously rich and well-seasoned and probably the best medium-well tenderloin I have had in a while. Watching Chef Edward add a squeeze of lemon to the salmon on top of the grill gave it a mouthwatering zesty taste. The Hibachi Chicken was crunchy on the outside and a bit dry on the inside but it still had flavor.

Each meal cost around 165SR and came with a clear but flavorful Japanese onion soup, a green salad with fresh green lettuce,

cucumbers, shaved tomato cubes, shredded carrots topped with a zesty ginger dressing, grilled vegetables that were perfectly seasoned and at the end of our meal they served us hot Japanese green tea and vanilla caramel ice cream that was included in the price.

Although it was the waiters’ attention I had the most trouble getting, they still showed up with more food every time they came. The setting was a change in environment, and the food was delish. All in all if you love fun atmospheres, delicious food and you don’t mind pouring your own water and tea, then this is the place for you.

“South Africa is another destination, which is now being requested by our wanderers: a combination of Cape Town for the city life and a safari in one of the world's most beautiful game reserves.”

Italy is an all time favourite across the board for people who would like to spend time in Europe. A combination of Rome, the Amalfi Coast and ending in Tuscany is always a crowd pleaser.

No matter what your skin issue, rest assured there is a treatment available for you. WHITES provides you with the best solutions for skin care to ensure your skin glows on the big day.

One of the most important things you can do in the lead up to your wedding day is to prepare your skin. Every bride wants to look beautiful, and although we can definitely hide those blemishes, nothing beats having naturally beautiful, glamorous-looking skin for the big day.

SKIN TREATMENTIt can be overwhelming trying to choose a special skin treatment. Here is a simplified skin treatment guide for the bride to be:

Serums and gel are the best since they are typically oil-free and are applied under moisturizers and makeup.

OILY/ACNE PRONE SKIN

A skin energizing treatment revs up the sloughing of dulling dead skin cells from your face. Regular exfoliation treatment will help with this issue as well.

DULL SKIN-TONEGentle skincare lines with natural ingredients will work best for this skin type. Avoid any added dyes or perfumes when looking for a skincare line for sensitive skin.

SENSETIVE SKIN

Milky cleansers and heavy moisturizers work best to cure parched skin.

DRY SKINSkin firming treatment can be done at home or at a spa to lift and firm flabby facial skin.

Finally the time has come! The wedding bells... every girl’s perfect dream with her perfect man, the perfect stage and most importantly, the perfect you. With only four weeks left, there are lots of farewell parties, bachelorette parties, people visiting, and so much more. With a pre-scheduled plan, you can not only keep yourself organized for your BIG day but also to a healthier you with a healthy glow, beautiful memories and a happy you! Follow our weekly planner with the “things to do” and make a checklist. Whether you want to lose those love handles or tone those wobbly thighs, this plan can get you there with minimum effort and with a goal in focus; you know you’d do just fine. So, let’s buckle up and work to a beautiful “you” for your “perfect” day!

By Fatmah Azam Ali N.D., C.H.S., C.N.C.

EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL WORKOUT: Now is the time to focus. Nothing should be last minute. If you are a late bird, it is time to get up a little early to warm up for the day. Needless to say, you must be hitting the gym already so if you are already working out, make sure you have an energy-boosting snack to make sure that you are more energized for longer sessions. Include a 10-minute meditation and relaxation session for yourself. Your workouts can include 15-minute intense cardio sessions done one day and a 60-minute aerobic workout such as brisk walking the other. Continue these simple workouts alternating it every day of the week. To get great results, use a body brush (you get many at Body Shop) and brush your body to detox and exfoliate your skin.

NUTRITION FOCUS: Diet-wise, it is time to focus on water intake. Increasing water intake means flushing out toxins which, in turn, leads to healthy skin and boosts your metabolism thereby helping you to lose weight as well. Have a 1-liter water bottle with you always. Try to at least finish two bottles (2 liters) in a day.

EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL WORKOUT: This week, you will increase your intense cardio session duration to 20 minutes and continue with your 60-minute brisk walking. Include all what you did last week. This week, you may do some strength training workouts in the gym for a “toned” you. Concentrate on arms, thighs and buttocks. Best time to work out: Morning. It is easy to stay motivated in the morning and results are seen often in people who do morning workouts. Now is your time to visualize. Nothing is impossible if you have the will to do and see your potential for the “big day”. Imagine the perfect day in a perfect way. If you have trouble sleeping, have camomile tea before going to sleep so you can retire peacefully. Mind power is the strongest driving force in and around us. Use it positively so you have a positive day.

NUTRITION FOCUS: Now, let’s cut down all the creamy and high-carbohydrate and high calorie meals. Go “oil-free”. If you are in a restaurant, go for grilled steak, broiled or baked meals. Your diet has to be high in protein and low in carbohydrates now, especially if you want to lose weight. If your meals are tasteless, add vinegar or lemon to it. Continue the water intake, as usual.

EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL WORKOUT: Ok, we will continue with what we were doing in Week 3 and Week 4 except the intense cardio workout session will be 30-35 minutes this week. Have a day off from your workouts every week so your body gets some time to relax and your muscles build evenly. Try some Yoga this week. Yoga adds flexibility to your body and helps get your inner imbalances, if any, into place. A 30-minute Yoga session twice a week this week will do wonders. Things can go wary in this week with you so if you have feelings to get rid of, write! Write your heart out so that in the end, you are left with nothing but positivity. Believe in Allah SWT and believe in yourself... everything would be just fine. Practice deep breathing for 10 minutes.

NUTRITION FOCUS: If you are thinking of starving yourself and getting skinny, think again. If you are going to be skipping meals, it would only get your metabolism down and all what you were doing throughout would be of no use. NEVER skip your meals or snacks. Healthy snacking on fruits is highly recommended. Relax while eating. It would not only help in better digestion but help you remain satiated for a long time. This week, its time for a facial, Moroccan bath (available in almost all salons these days) and yes, a massage! Treat yourself for the “big day”. Refresh yourself with mint tea. Avoid caffeinated items as much as possible to stay hydrated and yes, water intake continue, no compromises on the water intake if you want to see true results!

WEEK 3 WEEK 2

OH BOY...

ALLRIGHT THEN... IT’S CLOSE!

EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL WORKOUT: It’s here! A week left! You are not going to strain your body with any additional workouts so continue with what you were doing from Week 4, 3 and 2. This time, you need to relax more. Continue with your Yoga sessions as well. Deep breathing and meditation are highly recommended. This week will focus more on getting the beauty chores done such as the manicure, pedicure, another facial session and much more. Just make sure that you are relaxed. Your focus will be more on nutrition this week. Congratulations!! All that hard work will be paid off in just a couple of days when people will see a “gorgeous” you. Read as many Islamic books you can on the subject of having a “good marriage”. This will motivate you to be the person you should be from and after your “big” day. Let Allah SWT make this day memorable for you. Never forget your prayers while preparing for your “big” day. Be thankful to Him.

NUTRITION FOCUS: Now, there’s no sabotaging to the diet here by indulging into anything tempting but rather careful planning. Continue with all what you were doing in the previous weeks with the water intake plus as much as possible, focus on simple food consumption so you are not bloated. Go through the “Food Combining” rules on the internet so you are not bloated before your “big” day. There are basically three rules of food combining. Never combine protein with starch, water fruits (such as those from the melon family) are best eaten alone and not with meals and fruits are best when eaten alone or at least two hours post-meal. These simple rules will ensure that you are not bloated on your “big” day.

NON-INVASIVE PROCEDURES

BOTOX A chemical injectable used to erase and soften dynamic wrinkles mainly around the eyes and forehead by temporarily paralyzingly the muscle injected. Keep in mind it takes two to seven days to notice results.

FILLERAlso a chemical injectable, it is used to fill deep wrinkles and hollow facial areas around the nose, lips, cheeks, chin and jaw. Effects will noticed immediately before even leaving the clinic. Popular names in the market include Juviderm and Restylen.

MESOTHERAPY It consists of a mixture of vitamins (vitamin C & A), Antioxidants and Collagens all used to boost the skin's radiance and give you a glowing appearance. Usually it takes a few days to notice a difference.

However all these procedures can cause temporary bruising and swelling, which will resolve in a few days

INVASIVE SURGICAL PROCEDURES

RHINOPLASTYBetter known as "nose job", the procedure involves reshaping the nose by getting rid of the prominent bone, narrowing its base and refine the nasal tip all through a barely visible scar.

Alternatively, surgeons have came up with a non-surgical way to reshape the nose by injecting it with filler substance in specific areas, although that is limited to certain cases and criteria.

By Dr. Adnan Gelidan MD, FRCS(C), FACS - Plastic and reconstructive surgeon- Canadian Board of Plastic Surgery- Fellow of the American College of Surgery- Fellow of the Royal Collage of Surgery of Canada

Taking into consideration that it takes 3-6 months for the swelling to heal and see final results, so brides should plan accordingly.

LIPOSUCTIONOne of the most popularly requested procedures these days. Contrary to common misconception, liposuction is not a weight reducing procedure, but in fact, a body sculpting tool. Doctors will usually preform liposuction only to specific areas that fail to go away with regular diet and exercise. Using a metal hollow tube hooked to a negative suction machine, surgeons repeatedly pass the tube back and forth to remove fat from targeted areas like; face, neck, arms, chest, abdomen, back, hips, thighs and legs. You can expect bruising and swelling that will resolve within 3-6 weeks and wearing a pressure garment is crucial

BREAST AUGMENTATIONCommonly known as "boob job", it involves placement of silicon or saline implants in a pocket above or beneath the chest muscle, through a limited incision chosen by the patient. The patient can choose the shape (teardrop or round) and size (averaging 200cc per cup size).

Silicon gives a more natural and perky look, and studies have proven the safety of medical silicon. Usually patients are given sample implants they can try in a bigger bra to give them an idea of how they will look and feel.

According to Saudi Arabia’s ninth five-year plan, the Government is currently spending 1.4 trillion SR on infrastructure projects (transportation, housing, schools, etc.), meaning that a tremendous amount of waste is being created. A study published by MOMRA (Ministry Of Municipal & Rural Affairs) in 2009 indicates “Saudi Arabia produces 12 million tons of garbage per year, with each Saudi producing an average of 1.4 kilograms of waste per day” and this number is likely much higher by now. In the boom that Saudi Arabia is currently experiencing, it is essential to create awareness and educate the society about the importance of recycling.

In Riyadh, the waste management system is unique. While the Eastern Province and Jeddah enjoy the benefit of publicly available separation bins for recycling, this is not the case in Riyadh. Omar Midani, CEO of Beatona, an Environmental Solutions and Waste Management Project Development and Investment Company, explains that the bins in Jeddah and Dammam are part of a pilot project for segregation at source, but the difference in Riyadh is that “ a large chunk of the household waste that is generated goes through a material recovery facility or a sorting facility, prior to reaching a landfill. At the sorting facility, all the recyclable items are recovered: paper, cardboard, metal and plastics in all shapes and forms.” Mr. Midani further expands that next to the landfill in the south of Riyadh, there is a sorting facility that is one of the largest in the world with a capacity of 4000 tons per day of sorting. So almost 4000 tons of waste goes through sorting lines and the recyclable

material is recovered. Unfortunately a lot of people are not aware of this.” Therefore, on the government level, there is active involvement to ensure that the municipalities are disposing of the waste properly.

From the private sector perspective, there are ample recycling companies to choose from in Riyadh. They offer their services to schools, offices, and government entities, where a large amount of paper, plastic and solid waste is being disposed of. However, none of these companies offers a home pick-up service for recyclable material. After speaking to several of the companies, they explained that the amount collected from individual households is too small, but they are willing to take the waste material if it is dropped off at one of their collection facilities. Another solution could be to create neighborhood campaigns where the neighborhood as a whole collects recyclable waste in bins and agrees with one of the

recycling companies to pick up their material once a month to ensure a large amount of recyclable waste is available.

The weakness of the recycling effort in Riyadh is in communicating with the individual and getting him or her involved in the recycling effort, however, there are people initiating this dialogue on their own. Ms. Noura Nasser, a student at King Saud University, recently began a recycling project. They will begin next semester by handing out pamphlets to raise awareness about recycling and eventually roll out a whole recycling initiative within the University. The pamphlets were developed with the help of Saudi Arabian Plastic Recycling Company (SAPRC) based in Jeddah.

Mohammed Al Saadoun, a graduate from Al Yamamah University, started ASH IT in 2008, a recycling business of transforming waste into customized handmade goods. He collected aluminum cans from his university’s cafeteria and turned them into ashtrays, coasters, lighter holders, and pen holders. He also turned old abayas into laptop cases and used old CDs and cassettes in designing furniture pieces. After a two-year hiatus, Mohammed is hoping to be up and running again in the summer of 2013, and he is currently developing prototypes for new products using glass, plastics, and fabric (garments).

To strengthen the recycling concept in Riyadh, more education and awareness campaigns need to take place on an individual citizen level. People need to get involved and feel like they are making a differecet in protecting their environment. Each school should have recycling Ambassadors, and incentives should be created for recycling. People should also understand how waste is currently being disposed of, and the private sector, government sector and citizens should all work together to tackle the waste problem.
