DESTINATION RIYADH 5

In the year 2007, there were discussions within Saudi Arabia regarding changing the weekend from Thursday-Friday to Friday-Saturday in order to align with the GCC. However, the idea was dropped shortly after it was suggested. Six years later, in June 2013, the weekend change finally came into effect after King Abdullah issued a decree.

Most people find it difficult to adjust to and accept change. For that reason, many were, and still are, not pleased with the new weekend. However, sooner or

The Weekend Shift

Taxis need a makeover! Thumbs Down to...

Thumbs Up to...Communal Iftars

While common, it is by far an amazing feast to pull off every Ramadan that people tend to overlook in the city of Riyadh. Over 2,000 mosques and volunteer firms in the capital this year are managing a communal Ramadan iftar tent and best part is, it’s not only helping the less fortunate but also brings Muslims together in solidarity and oneness of faith. Saudi billionaires having iftar with everyone else at a Ramadan tent; a policeman breaks his fast with expat laborers on the side of the road. These rare scenes remind us what our faith can transcend and show us what this month truly means to each of us.

We’ve ranted and raved about the lack of public transport and the inconvenience it causes daily, but it’s time to put a spotlight on the state of Riyadh’s existing modes of transport. To begin with, taxis here don’t use meters so the fare you pay depends on your ability to bargain! Most taxis are very run down, the seats are hardly ever spotless and let’s face it - it does NOT smell like flowers in there. As the only commute option available for many people, the taxis in Riyadh need a serious facelift!

later everyone will realize that this long overdue change only brings positive results. To begin with, Saudi businesses and banks now have four working days per week, rather than three, that overlap with Western businesses therefore making it more convenient in terms of trading and communicating. This new weekend will also factually provide Saudi Arabia with more economic opportunities for growth. The only change families will have to get accustomed to is shifting their Thursday activities to Saturday!

Useful Information

By now you’ll have gotten used to the nocturnal feel of Ramadan with the city half asleep during the day and vibrating with energy at night until sunrise. But just when you thought you could get used to the nearly deserted roads in the day and at iftar time, it is Eid and the whole city is buzzing with activity. People flock to restaurants for their first daylight meal in a month and families swarm the parks to celebrate this joyous occasion that marks a fresh start. The Eid day actually starts with Eid prayer and to help you feel more at home, Destination breaks down the tradition and religious ritual of Eid prayer for newcomers and visitors alike.

DESTINATION RIYADH12

DESTINATION RIYADH 13

THE ESSENCE OF EID PRAYERAll over the world on the morning of Eid, Muslims gather a while after fajr prayer to perform Eid prayer in congregation. Eid prayer is the heart of the joyous occasion of Eid, and Muslims get dressed up and head to the mosque or a large open ground praising Allah, exchanging Eid greetings and distributing sweets and dates.

PREPARING FOR PRAYERBefore the Eid prayer, Muslims will get ready and put on their best clothes, preferably new or including at least one new item. The men will spray on cologne or ittir that is an essential part of the Eid morning routine and the women will put on new abayas over their festive and colorful Eid outfits. On Eid Al-Fitr, before heading to the mosque, people will first distribute the obligatory charity called Zakat Al-Fitr, which is why the Eid Al-Fitr prayer starts later than the prayer for Eid Al-Adha, which is offered earlier so people can return home to sacrifice their animals. Also, before leaving for Eid Al-Fitr prayer, it is sunnah (the way of the Prophet PBUH) to eat some dates, while on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha he would not eat until he returned from prayer and had offered the sacrifice.

THE PRAYER AND THE SERMONThe Eid prayer consists of two rakahs (units) and no athaan (call to prayer). As neither the Eid prayer nor the sermon are obligatory, the sermon is delivered after the prayer and those who do not wish to stay to listen may leave. However, to offer Eid prayer is strongly recommended, as the Prophet (PBUH) never missed it.

POST-EID PRAYERAfter the prayer and sermon, Muslims leave the mosque to return home or to visit family and friends to exchange Eid greetings or to offer their sacrifice on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha. While leaving the mosque, it is sunnah to take a different route than the one taken to reach it. This is in order to give more charity and to exchange Eid greetings with more people.

THE SACRIFICE ON EID AL-ADHA Eid Al-Adha falls on the tenth of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah, marks the end of the major rituals of Hajj and is a commemoration of Allah’s mercy on the Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH). After the Eid prayer, Muslims will return home to sacrifice their animals in the name of Allah. The animals may be goats, cows, camels or sheep. Then the meat is distributed to the needy and to friends and family. This year, Eid Al-Adha will fall some time in October 2013.

GET INVOLVED!One way to get involved is to give charity on the day of Eid. Another way is to simply ask your Muslim friends and colleagues to involve you in their Eid celebrations. That way you’ll learn about their culture while they learn about yours. Besides, more is always merrier!

RABAT MANZIL SHINES THROUGH

SOCIAL MEDIABy Talah Al Tamimi

How is social media impacting business? We highlight the experience of a young Saudi who is quickly making her presence felt in the social media sphere through her brand name Rabat Manzil (housewife). Tala Al-Sahhaf is part of a growing generation of entrepreneurs who are incorporating social media to jumpstart their business.

The beginning of Rabat Manzil developed while Tala was living in Paris. “When I was at university I gained a lot of weight; I had to lose at least 10 kilos. A lot of it had to do with eating out, so I had to learn how to cook at home. It started out with very basic salads and grilled meat. Then I got bored so

I needed to expand my menu. That’s when I started experimenting in the kitchen.”

Tala then moved back to Saudi Arabia to find herself involved in all household tasks, from cooking to table settings to flower arrangements. “I was very proud calling myself a Rabat Manzil although my friends teased me about it.” Even with a 9-to-5 job, Tala was always busy planning and hosting dinners at home. She explains, “I've always loved the idea of being this perfect 1950's housewife- this very put together person who puts on the most amazing dinners, knows the do's and don'ts, and the woman that inspires other women to be like her.”

DESTINATION RIYADH18

Page 19: DR Issue 6

The Rabat Manzil name was created by coincidence while Tala was filling out her bio for a twitter account. This section required a job description and the first thing that came to Tala’s mind was that she was currently a rabat manzil (housewife). Her family and friends were amused by the name and it had stuck on her since.

After creating an Instagram account for her alter ego, Rabat Manzil, Tala explains, “my friends started following as a joke, however the account quickly grew in terms of followers and many people started contacting me to ask about certain recipes or products I use, thinking I was a catering company.” People love Rabat Manzil’s mouth-watering pictures and the atmosphere created in photos.

Tala invites people for dinner, experiments with her table settings and cooking, takes pictures and posts them on the Rabat Manzil Instagram account. The feedback from Instagram was a tremendous success and it proved that there is a need for this sort of business in the Saudi market, “so I decided to take things seriously and I'm currently in the process of creating my own business out of Rabat Manzil.”

After receiving a high following on social media, Tala was confident enough to quit her 9-to-5 job. As an official Rabat Manzil now, she is focusing on turning what she once considered a hobby into a business. “Everyone thinks I'm insane, but for me it is something I really want to pursue, and if I don’t do it now, then I don’t know when I would do it. It is a risk I really want to take.”

With the launch of her blog to post recipes, Tala is in the process of fine tuning her business; a Martha Stewart concept, with a Middle Eastern twist targeting the young Arab woman. “The concept is to glamorize the idea of being a housewife. I really want to change the stereotype that all rabat manzils are bored housewives that have nothing to do.”

By the end of this year Tala hopes to publish her first book; her top 100 recipes, followed by a series of books in the near future and a concept store with everything a rabat manzil would want or need, reasonably priced and locally made.

“Social media,” Tala explains, “is a great way to test the market and see people’s reaction towards a certain product or service. It is easy and free!”

Great idea Tala! Keep us posted on your future plans!

THE NAJDI EID

BREAKFASTTHE DISHES AND THE TRADITIONS

Eid Al Fitr is the first yearly celebration in Saudi Arabia, and in the Muslim world at large. Since it comes right after Ramadan when food is rigidly abstained from during certain times, breakfast on the first day of Eid is very special! Read on to get familiar with the tradition of gourmet Eid breakfast in Riyadh.

On the eve of Eid Al Fitr, the scent of Al Oud (aromatic stick) dissipates in every corner of the house. Echoing in the background are the timeless melodies of Umm Kulthum's chant "Ya Laylet El Eid" (literally meaning "the night of Eid"). The omnipresent Najdi subtleties remain intact during the feast: people prepare their special Eid garments while their appetites stir in anticipation. "The table spreads out with food," is perhaps the best way to describe the assortment of traditionally quaint dishes that the festive breakfast consists of.

When sunrise emerges, Eid prayer is performed, and a couple of khutbas (sermons) are delivered, worshipers gather to exchange greetings and spread an en masse sufra (banquet) where everyone brings a home-made dish like jareesh, rice, qursan (the three dishes can be layered together magically to form a trilogy called mathlootha) and mataziz. As people move up to fetch the next dish, they relish every meal extended on the long successive rugs that are rolled out especially for the occasion.

People head back home feeling tranquil with a sense of harmony, solidarity and togetherness that pervades the joyful air. With the morning dew they receive guests who pay cordial visits out of kindness and appreciation to their families and friends offering mu’ayada (Eid best wishes). No wonder they serve the Arab signature hospitality gahwa and shai (coffee and tea) along with dates, ma'amoul (pastries filled with dates) and delectable candies that melt in your mouth, such as Turkish delights and toffee sweets. Then the guests stay for the brunch mouft’ha; the sumptuous portions are made of whole lamb/hashi

and rice, beautifully decorated with boiled eggs, macaroni, kibda, black lemons and a dash of various spices like cinnamon, cardamom, clove and pepper. And of course the meal is not complete without salads. After the voluminous meal has been munched on, they get refreshed with laban or soft drinks as well as a cornucopia of fruits. Beware, this lusciously greasy meal can be quite irresistible.

Some families prefer a lighter breakfast in the form of marasiya (Saudi pancakes) smeared with honey on the first day of Eid Al Fitr. A lot of people also enjoy a plate of kibda plus laham megalgal/hamees (stir-fry liver and lamb) with a side of scrambled eggs, jubniya, ful, pickles, olives and bread. Although sweets may seem common and fluffy, they are still an integral part of the Eid spirit. Each family sets a large candy bowl or tiered tray for colorful spots of halawiyat (candies and sweets). Chocolate is likely to be found on every tabletop and counter, beautifully arranged inside Eid designed and ornamented boxes. There is an array of chocolate shops ringed along Olaya Thalatheen Road that display a collection of flavorsome sets.

On the other hand, traditional sweets such as hanneni (a dates dish) or modern resembles from cupcakes to chocolate fountain dippings are also popular treats at the breakfast table. Behold, there are a lot of options to indulge yourself and appease your senses.

How could anyone sum up the entirety of a Najdi Eid Al-Fitr day in all its glory, any Eid day in any culture, in mere words? After all, Eid is meant to be experienced and felt, isn’t it? Nevertheless, let me invite you to take a glimpse of what the festivities are like in a typical Najdi home.

A VERY NAJDI EIDBy Johara Al Mogbel

PICTURE THIS…

Everyone is sitting around in the living room after iftar. The TV, for once, is flipped to the national news channel. Phones starts to buzz as the rumors fly in and then BAM! It's been seen! Shawwal's moon has been spotted, meaning it’s the last day of Ramadan and the next day declared to be Eid.

Now you're hit by the bittersweet feelings of happiness that Eid is here and sadness that Ramadan is over; your brain is whirling, a mental checklist springing up for all the things you have to get done before the celebrations the next day- get your hair done if you're a girl, iron your favorite ghotra or shmaagh if you're a guy, buy the chocolate, shine your shoes, get the bkhoor (arabic incense) and most importantly, stop by an ATM for the children's eidiyat (gift money). The shopping malls are full, salons are busy, and there is that sense of “something-important-is-happening” in the air.

Then as your head hits the pillow early so you can wake up bright and early at dawn, you hope your body isn't that used to the sleeping schedule you put it through in Ramadan and won't keep you up. Chances are you'll fail, but that's okay, we're all secretly equally bleary-eyed too.

Unless you're one of the lucky few who managed to sleep, your alarm is already ringing. You're tired but you get up excitedly anyway. It's time for Eid prayer and that's the best part of these celebrations. It gives closure to the wonderful, pious month you just had. It fills you with a sense of community as you sit there in the mosque closest to you, noticing all your next-door neighbors and their children joining you in the wee hours of the morning and listening to the khutba. And to give a little taste of what is to come, children carrying baskets filled with candy are passing through the mosque, giving out their bounty with an excited smile.

Happy Eid!

After Eid prayer, phone calls are made to those that won't be able to join you on the first day (though you’ll probably still call those you’ll be seeing in a few hours, just because). Thereafter, we head home to get ready for the first visits of the day.

EID IN NAJD, LIKE ALL OF SAUDI ARABIA AND THE MUSLIM WORLD, IS MAINLY ABOUT FAMILY, AND THERE IS NOWHERE ELSE IT'S MORE VISIBLE THAN HERE.

For the first day, each family will most probably have an allotted time frame for their Eid feast, starting at noon after everyone has put on their best clothes and is ready for the day. In my case, for example, brunch is with my paternal family, my father's sisters and brothers. Most Najdi families will probably serve a thbeeha (rice and meat) first thing in the morning (although it's a practice that people seem to be changing - hopefully). After we're done with brunch, then it's off to my mother's family for lunch.

After Asr prayer, it's a common practice to spend the afternoon visiting the elderly family members to celebrate Eid with them personally since they're usually unable to leave their homes. Dinner might be for the extended family such as my mother's aunts and uncles. And as per Arab tradition, food will be everywhere.

Come nightfall, we're exhausted! But it's the good sort of exhaustion, the sort that comes with the knowledge that the day has been celebrated to the fullest with the people you love, and you were looking your best, regardless of the fact that your heels have now molded to your feet and you'll probably need to have them surgically removed! There's also the satisfaction that comes with knowing that you have made others happy that day, from the elderly you've visited to the children you've gifted.

Then of course come the second and third day of Eid which are usually a lot calmer, with the second day used for recuperation after the beautiful chaos of the first day. It’s also for any leftover visits that might have been missed. While the adults continue with the hustle and bustle, the children would be enjoying all the new toys and money they've just received- aren’t they lucky?

That, my wondrous readers, is the condensed version of what Eid in a Najdi family is mostly like. I hope I did it justice, and wish that your Eid be equally filled with joy and happiness for many years to come, wherever you are.

Page 26: DR Issue 6

One of the most exciting parts of Eid is receiving the Eidiya, which means children, teens and young adults in the family are handed money or gifts from adults or elders. Commonly, this cherished tradition consists of a certain amount of cash placed in an envelope with the person's name on it. However, we thought of giving you some creative but easy-to-do ideas that are sure to add more fun and a twist to the day.

That’s a Great Eidiya!

MONEY BOXChocolate lovers will have a double treat! Buy a box of chocolate or candy, empty out some (or all) of the pieces but save the small paper cups or wrappers inside, then refill them with riyals in a variety of denominations; 10s, 20s, 50s, 100s or 500s- as high up as you can afford. Roll, fold or stack the money to vary it's appearance, pop the cover back on the box and viola! Eidiya box.Difficulty: Easy

BALLOONSThis is super easy and loads of fun for the kids. Stuff balloons with whatever amount of riyals you would like, then blow them up, tie them with a string and hang them upside down from the ceiling, gather the kids and start popping! Caution: do NOT blow the balloons with helium, nothing spoils the fun more than kids crying over runaway Eidiya balloons.Difficulty: Easy

SODA BOTTLEGive Eidiya and save the planet! Recycle an empty one-litre plastic soda bottle by cutting a sideways U shape cut on the side of the bottle, fill it with money, candy and treats, then tape the U flap back on to the side and wrap the bottle to cover it up. You can use giftwrap, a printable "happy Eid" card, or have the kids draw and color Eid greetings and tape the paper around the bottle.Difficulty: Average (great DIY activity for kids)

MONEY LEISA Lei is a traditional Hawaiian necklace made of flowers or leaves. To make the "Saudi Eidiya" version, all you need is a bunch of 1 Riyals and some string or ribbons. Gather each Riyal individually from the middle and tie it to look like a bow, then attach it to a big string necklace, keep tying the riyal-bows next to each other until you have formed an oval "money" lei. Now who wouldn't love that Eidiya?Difficulty: Average (DIY activity for kids)

Every year the Riyadh Municipality organizes various celebrations and festivals all around the city. There are events designed for families, for ladies only and for men only. Most of the festivities concentrate on celebrating the Saudi heritage with traditional dances, music, poetry, foods, displays by craftsmen and craftswomen, exhibitions portraying the Saudi culture and traditional handicraft markets. I first visited the National Museum as part of an educational field trip we had in high school. Don’t ask me when, I’ve been working for almost a decade now, do or rather, don’t do the math. Feeling a tad bit nostalgic, I decided to go back and somewhat do a refresher course on Saudi history, archaeology, and culture without my teacher telling me not to wander off.

A little background: The National Museum was built to be the cultural and civilization hub that showcases the historical development of Saudi Arabia, the peninsula as well as the dissemination and growth of Islam. It’s located at the heart of the King Abdul Aziz Historical Center, in the old district of Murabah. It has eight halls in total. The Museum is considered to be a primary tourist attraction in Riyadh and the destination for children on educational excursions.

Wanting to do my own version of a “Night at the Museum,” I took advantage of the Ramadan schedule, which was from 9:30 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. The experience begins as soon as you step out of your car and take a walk through the park surrounding the Museum grounds. I was positively surprised to find families having picnics, youngsters on bikes and skateboards on the square and even saw some folks dipping their feet or splashing about in the waterscapes.

I could’ve spent a good hour or so just people watching but decided to complete my mission first. I headed to the Museum; it’s just as much of an architectural delight as it is in the mornings. The lobby was well lit and much larger than I remembered it to be. Huge banner-like flags greeted you on your way in.

I bought my ticket at the reception/counter for 10 riyals and proceeded to the first hall – The Man and Universe. I was welcomed by, low and behold, a rock. But wait, it’s no ordinary one, it’s actually a meteorite recovered from the Empty Quarter. If you look closely at it, you’ll see specks of glittering matter. I imagined how it entered the atmosphere with its now permanently concave shape.

You can’t and shouldn’t miss the spherical illusion they have on display that aims to portray the creation of the universe. I won’t spoil the trip for you but please note that if you are easily startled, approach interactive

displays with a sense of anticipation. Heavy and bass toned voiceovers are apparently a thing at the museum.

One of the highlights of this section is the elephant skeleton, I was hoping to see dinosaur fossils but yeah, this would do. This part of the museum showcases the biological, ecological and archaeological base of the Kingdom. I’m not much of a geology fan but I did enjoy looking at the naturally formed stones and precious gems that were forged in the desert (who knew great things can spring from sand?). The Desert Rose is a personal favorite.

Next up is the Arab Kingdoms; it highlights early civilizations in the peninsula, particularly the Midian. While there were actual rocks with ancient scripts and drawings, most of the displays and installations were replicas. I would say that they were accurate depictions. The hall is filled with artifacts, tools used by early ancestors and pioneer land dwellers.

For those who are into the development of trade routes and era of caravans, the Jahiliyya Hall has a lot to offer. It shows a lot about the pre-Islamic era and the different cities that existed before. I particularly

enjoyed seeing the old book and journal pages written by merchants, poets and scholars. Calligraphy and ancient scripts for me are the great grandfathers of typography.

The Prophet’s Mission Hall is probably the most lit part of the Museum. Coming from the dark ambience of the previous three, climbing the escalator towards the white lights felt like ascending into paradise. I enjoyed tracing through the life of the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), seeing the lineage, manuscripts of the Qur’an.

The fifth hall, Islam and the Arabian Peninsula, is accessed through a tunnel. I had two friends with who went ahead and I had to walk through it on my own. Yes, I believe its meant to be inspiring but the voice over of chants and children was a bit too eerie for me. I ended up running through it, probably won’t feel that way in the daytime. The fifth hall consists mostly replicas representing the second turn of civilization, expansion of the Ottoman era and Islam. This is quite an educational walkthrough but not so much of a visual feasting.

The Exhibition Hall of the First and Second State is a personal favorite with the old armory display and the miniature version of the old city embedded on the floor. Given the lack of fellow guests, we were able to get photos sitting down on top of the glass (not advised but I’m sure they’ll let the kids do it).

The Unification Hall showcased the turn to modernity and solidarity of the Kingdom through King Abdul Aziz Al Saud. Don’t miss the Unification documentary. It’s a good 20 minute long film, a bit old since I remember having watched it as a student. They’ve added some effects that were, err, entertaining; it’s the next best thing to a cinematic experience, I guess.

Last but not the least is the Hajj and Two Holy Mosques Hall. I’m a big fan of realistic miniature renditions of cities and a photography enthusiast too, I was very much

wowed by the glass-enclosed versions of the holy cities’ mosques. With black and white photos printed on see-through drapes hanging from the walls, I ended up just standing and appreciating this section for a long time before being told it was already midnight.

The National Museum is a great eye opener for people who want to know more about the Kingdom and its roots. It may lose its charm if you come the second or third time around. The galleries haven’t changed much since the last time I was there. However, that doesn’t make the Museum any less marvelous to visit.

By Hana Al JazzarRIGHT SCHOOLCHOOSING THE

Choosing which school to enroll your children in is a big decision. You want to give them the best possible education, you want them to have a healthy and happy learning experience and moreover, you want to feel confident that you have all the information needed to make the correct decision. So, exactly how do you go about doing that?Read on as we help equip you with everything you need to consider when looking for the right private school.

KNOW WHAT YOU WANT IN A SCHOOL

For a start, ask yourself what would be the ideal learning environment based on your child's personality and characteristics? What is important to you and what do you think is fundamental for your child's education? Think about what you want from a school before you ask what a school has to offer. Afterwards, familiarize yourself with different teaching methods; traditional, Montessori, International- which of these suit your child and meets your values, beliefs and culture.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Research all your school options thoroughly. Try to find out about the following:A. Academic curriculumB. Student and teaching staff diversityC. Environment, school's mission and visionD. Consider the school's locationE. Facilities; survey the buildings, labs, play areas, etc.F. Tuition and miscellaneous fees

Early on, make sure you find out if the school is licensed and if they are fully accredited by a special association or academic council. It would also help to know how the school is managed; is it part of a larger educational group, a partnership or is it owned by a sole patron?

You can also gather feedback from family or friends, however keep in mind that as much as word-of-mouth is helpful, it could be biased and circumstantial. Best thing to do is…

VISIT THE SCHOOL

Don't just go there but allot enough time to go around, bring your child and see how they feel about the environment as well. Make an appointment and be armed with your checklist (refer to the School Checklist Column), and another list with all the questions you have. Don’t hesitate to inquire!

We recommend that you remember to ask these important questions:• How much homework should your child

expect to receive? What is the class size and teacher to student ratio?

• Do they have after-school activities or extracurricular classes and are they included in the tuition?

• Do they have a certified nurse? What are their bullying and disciplinary policies?

• Do they have a PTA? • What are their testing and assessment

standards? Does the school support children with special needs?

• In the case of International schools: ask how strong is Arabic, Religion and Quran?

SpecialFeatures

Page 39: DR Issue 6

Before leaving, request for copies of newsletters, academic calendars and any important dates you should keep in mind, like application deadlines and age cut-off dates on top of the enrollment files and brochures they’ll give you.

TRUST YOUR INSTINCT

After your overall assessment, look at the big picture and don't sweat the small stuff; no school is perfect. If you're looking for perfection you'll end up feeling disappointed and worried. Rely on your personal judgment and parental instinct first and foremost, once you've chosen a school and enrolled your child, keep in touch to ensure they are delivering as promised and your child is adapting nicely.

CHECKLISTSCHOOL

Ask Qs like a pro! Bring this list with you:

Is there a sense of challenge, leadership and achievement at the shcool?

Do the children and the teachers seem happy?

Can you sense genuine warmth and respect between them?

Is there a balanced and comprehensive curriculum?

Does the school cater for children’s characteristics and individual differences?

Is the school properly staffed? Is there a librarian, physical education instructor, art and computer teacher?

How involved can a parent be in their child’s learning process?

Are the school grounds neat and safe?

Is playground equipment adequate and well-maintained?

Are the washrooms clean and up to standard?

Are the classrooms inviting?

Are the students' works proudly displayed?

Is there a sense of order and community?

What qualifications do the teachers have?

Does the school invest in staff training?

One of the most important ways to get ready for preschool and minimize the waterworks is to ease your child into school life before it even starts. Here are a few ways to do that:

1. Talk to your child about school: about learning, playing and making friends.

2. Many schools open weeks before the first day; take your toddler to get comfortable with the classroom and teacher.

3. Adjust their sleep routine to sleeping and waking up early.

4. Take your child to pick out his/her own school supplies and outfits.

5. Keep your tone upbeat and let your excitement rub off on your child.

6. Help him/her lay out an outfit for the first day.

7. Don’t rush through the morning of the first day; allow ample time for talking, getting dressed and having a good breakfast together.

8. Once you’ve reached the classroom don’t stay for longer than necessary, say a cheerful goodbye and leave promptly.

9. Do NOT sneak out.

10. Do NOT turn around if your child starts crying as you leave, teachers are trained to deal with this.

DURAIBAH’S STORY WITHMARWAN QUTUBMarwan Qutub is a Saudi man who has marked his presence in the region when he founded 3Points, the first Saudi advertising agency, in 1998. He recently dove into the retail industry as well when he created Duraibah, which is a brand that revolves around designing and producing Islamic products. Destination had the opportunity to listen to the story of Duraibah from the founder himself, Marwan Qutub.

How did you come up with the idea of designing souvenirs with Islamic spirit? It has been an old dream to revive this category. Whenever I visited Makkah, for decades I saw the same traditional souvenirs. The beauty of contemporary Islamic design is a rich field. I’ve always thought that if I am to buy a souvenir, I can’t find something that caters to the taste of a well-traveled Muslim who is exposed to modern brands and global trends.

What were the challenges that you faced in this project?Striking the right design formula and matching it with the desired product quality.

Can we say that Duraibah will provide an Islamic lifestyle alternative to the youth?Yes, for sure. Because Duraibah is inspired by faith and it aims to enrich the bond between Muslims and the Islamic culture. This is achieved through contemporary lifestyle products that young Muslims would enjoy in their daily lives with pride.

Why did you name the store Duraibah?Duraibah got its name from one of the ancient doors of the Haram that led to Sowaikah, a main market in Makkah at the time. Today, as a contemporary Islamic design house that is born out of Makkah, Duraibah opens the door for lifestyle products that enrich the bond between Muslims and the Islamic culture.

Page 51: DR Issue 6

How is the turnout? And what were the common questions you had?Alhamdulillah, all people who have seen our products or visited Duraibah stores in Makkah were impressed. It is amazing to see them expressing their happiness and delight with the brand’s concept. The most common question we have got on our social media pages (FB, Instagram and Twitter) is about where people can buy Duraibah products from.

Are we going to see Duraibah in other cities inside and outside the Kingdom?Yes and for our clients’ convenience, the good news is that our e-store was launched on the first of Ramadan and it offers Duraibah products to Muslims all over the world.

Trader Vic’s is the type of restaurant that transports you to another part of the world with its Polynesian inspired menu and exotic ambience. First founded in California, the restaurant is known for its amazing bar drinks and live bands.

The tiki hut inspired entrance is a good introduction to what you could expect on the inside. The walls and ceilings are adorned with sea-faring antiques, more tiki stuff, miniature ships and Trader Vic’s trademark masks while Caribbean music plays softly throughout the night.

Choose between a dinner booth or the lounge area where you will find Riyadh’s first open bar (no alcohol here, we’re still in the Kingdom) serving mocktails and luau drinks. There is even a special banquet room that can be reserved for gatherings (instant Eid party here).

The menu at Trader Vic’s has evolved since it first opened a few years back. Though it attempts to maintain a Polynesian and Pacific theme to its offerings, it has put in

some dishes that are more attuned to the local palette.

The drink choices at Trader Vic’s make for a fun post-work hangout with friends. They also have group drinks served in large seashells and long straws that are again, fun to order. Here’s a tip: if your taste buds are a tad bit sensitive to sweetness, ask the "bartender" to lay low on the syrups.

Over all, Trader Vic’s is one of those places you go to for a quasi-escape. It’s best enjoyed with friends and family members. The staff is attentive and polite and the kitchen accommodates certain guest requests to make each plate just the way you like it.

A Gracious Serving of Italian Goodness

A homegrown Italian restaurant chain, Piatto dishes out a gastronomic experience that earned itself the Best Casual Dining Restaurant 2013 from the Saudi Awards for Tourism Excellence.

A smile that says, “Buon Giorno!” is the first thing you see when you enter Piatto. The restaurant is spacious with a Piazza built at the center, capturing the feel of a small town Italian square. The second floor can accommodate a private gathering and large families and also has a play area.

The vibrant surroundings and high-glass ceilings encourage guests to explore while striking details here and there (like a vespa!) get you into a whole different vibe.

Your dining experience is initiated with a complimentary garden salad and breadbasket. Every dish that follows comes in generous and fresh portions that are refined down to the last herb. While all the items on the menu are exquisite, the selection can be overwhelming, so ask the wait staff to give you suggestions.

The appetizers have something for both the indulgent and health-conscious. While the pizzas with their crispy-thin crust and unique toppings are definitely addictive. Go for something less familiar like the Pear, Walnut and Gorgonzola - you won’t be disappointed! The pasta is imported straight from Italy and cooked just right.

In a city of food-lovers, Piatto has put together just the right ingredients to win the hearts of local diners: oh so deliciozo dishes, great people and a refreshing ambience.

I was walking down a street in Paris, window-shopping while waiting for my sister. My eyes landed on a big juicy-looking cookie at Brioche Doree. I was at the cafe within seconds, ordering the cookie. It was one of the best cookies I've ever had!

I was recently on my honeymoon in Bali and my husband and I decided to enjoy a spa day at the Ayana Beach Resort, not knowing that the resort actually holds the #1 spa in the world! We decided to experience the massage on the rock, which was literally just that. Held on a hut on top of a rock, it was the most amazing spa experience of my life, with a mezmorizing sunset view.

After driving for almost two hours on the mountains of Italy headed towards France, we shockingly reached a dead end. Then the GPS asked us to get into a ‘fairy?’ We drove onto this train cart that we saw and were in the dark for 20 minutes till we found ourselves on the Swiss side! It was an unexpected and memorable experience!

The Palio di Siena is a horse race held twice a year in Siena. Luckily, I was in the area and made sure to attend this once in a lifetime experience with over 70,000 other spectators at the Piazza del Campo. It's like a medieval festival complete with a paegent with fire throwers and fast-foot dancers, where ten horses and riders, bareback and dressed in appropriate colors, represent their city wards. The race itself took only about three minutes but is the most exhilarating experience.

I had the freshest sushi ever at Umai restaurant at the new Oberoi hotel, it was so good! The rest of their menu was really delicious as well.

On a weekend trip to Dubai we decided to make quick stops to as many places as possible. One of my favorite stops was the Dubai Fountain which is absolutely breathtaking at night with the perfectly choreographed lights, music and water. TO GAIN TRANQUILITY IN PRAYER

10 STEPS

1. Get in the mood: Repeat the words of athan to prepare your mind and body for prayer.

2. Pray on time and avoid delays.

3.View prayer as a blessing: God has granted you the ability and time to pray, so use prayer as an opportunity to thank Him.

4. If possible... Avoid praying in crowded and noisy rooms.

5. Keep away from distractions: Turn off or mute the TV, and keep your phone away.

6. Stand still: Before starting to pray, take a few moments to stand still and clear your mind so you can dedicate your thoughts solely to prayer.

7. Eyes on the ground: Keep your gaze fixed on the spot of sujood.

8. Start with a supplication: The most commonly recited supplication is dua’a al-istiftaah (the opening supplication).

9. Read different suras (verses) in your prayers: Don’t fall into a routine of the same one or two suras every time.

10. Make at least one dua’a for each sajda.

Spirituality

Page 63: DR Issue 6

There is a unique sense of serenity and spirituality in the air during Ramadan that makes the acts of worship a breeze. It is a journey that teaches us a lot about life and about ourselves. However, soon after the month is over we fall back into our old habits. In order to maintain the Ramadan spirit, it is important to remember everything we learnt during the month.

THE POST-RAMADANSIDESTEP

Blues

1. It’s no secret that mosques are all packed during Ramadan. Make it a point to continue to pray on time and in congregation.

2. Remember that no matter how tired you were many times during the holy month you stayed up in worship all night. Motivate yourself to wake up at least 30 minutes before fajr to pray tahajjud.

3. Fast regularly even after Ramadan, especially on Mondays and Thursdays.

4. Make up your missed fasts as soon as possible in order to avoid delay.

5. Give charity regularly; take out a fixed percentage of your salary every month and help the needy.

6. Recite Quran everyday, just as you made it a point to do so during Ramadan.

7. Practice patience just as you did through your hunger everyday during Ramadan.

8. Remember to be compassionate.

9. You can quit smoking because you stayed away from your cigarettes from dawn to dusk for a month.

Hamza grew up in Jeddah, went to school and loved to play during recess especially since he was brought up in an active and sporty family. Unfortunately however, Hamza had a heart condition and three open heart surgeries by the age of 12. This worried his parents and chaperones, and he wasn’t always allowed to run out and play. At a certain age, he convinced his father to allow him to play football and that he would handle the consequences. This was the start of Hamza taking control and overcoming his physical illnesses and not giving into them.

With his newfound outlook things were great for Hamza. When he was about to finish his degree in finance at CBA and was a budding actor in commercials, he suddenly wasn’t feeling well and he went to Houston, Texas for tests. He was diagnosed with an eight centimeter tumor that was divided between his esophagus and stomach. Depression and anxiety set in, and finally hope. Chemotherapy and radiation made matters even more difficult but faith gave him the strength to fight it.

The operations and treatment weren’t the only thing that helped Hamza beat cancer. His online awareness campaign ‘I Fight Cancer with a Smile’ put him in contact with many inspired supporters who shared their prayers. With Allah’s blessings, Hamza is now happy and healthy and his campaign is showing us that cancer is not the hopeless disease it’s perceived to be.

Join Hamza’s campaign and learn about his battle at facebook.com/ifightcancerwithasmile

Cancer is a heavy word; when we hear it, different images from movies pop into our heads and a feeling of dread overcomes us. That’s the misconception that Hamza Junaid Iskandar is trying to eradicate. Hamza was diagnosed with stage three cancer in November 2012 at the age of 21 and became, as he likes to call it, a cancer fighter and not a cancer patient – with a smile, no less. He shared his journey online and started an awareness campaign, and by March 2013 all of the cancer cells thankfully disappeared completly.

Ask Your Personal Trainer for IdeasIf you are a member of a gym you can ask one of the trainers or your own trainer for a program that you can do if there are no gym facilities at the hotel you will stay! You will be surprised how much you can do using simple everyday items such as a park bench, kids’ playground or a walking track, stairs and stools. The term ‘fitness anywhere’ is not just a saying; there are always ways to keep active.

• Nike Training• Adidas miCoach• Fitness buddy• You are your own gym

Hotel FacilitiesIf you are staying in a hotel or hotel apartments, check if they have a gym that you can use. If it is a larger hotel they will normally have attendants that can help you with exercise selection. If not, you can ask your trainer as I mentioned previously. Check online for pictures; most hotels will post images of their facilities and services. If not, ring ahead of time to see what equipment they have or if they have trainers or classes you can attend.

Restaurant Advice• On vacation you’re relaxed, and my advice is that you should indulge in the finer things and enjoy, but at the same time don’t over do it. The odd dessert or ice cream will not kill your efforts but daily ones may!

• A lot of resorts offer an all inclusive option where you can have food and drinks on tap all day. My suggestion is to avoid this if you can.

• Opt for bed and breakfast and enjoy a variety of restaurants. If you stay in an apartment you can buy local foods from their supermarkets and cook some meals. • Dine a la carte rather than buffet. You can often overindulge at buffets, while if you dine a la carte you have a say in your order.Source out healthy options and restaurants before you go and when you go.

• There are a lot of websites that offer reviews on restaurants such as Tripadvisor.com

• Think ahead and be prepared before you go!

Download a Fitness ApplicationWith modern technology and internet access everywhere it’s almost impossible to find a workout that you cannot do with little or no equipment.

In conclusion, enjoy your vacation, move lots, think smart about nutrition and remember to enjoy yourself. Often a break from your program and a little indulgence is what you need to refocus and come back with more energy and motivation to get fitter and stronger.

Here are some recommended applications that have great workouts:

Sight SeeingA great way to staying active and fit during your holiday is walking and cycling. If you are going to an area that has parks, a beach or local attractions that are a reasonable distance away, why not rent a bicycle or walk instead of using taxis. Believe it or not, a lot of my clients that travel tend to walk, swim and bike more and actually lose more weight than they do during their day-to-day living.

Liquids and sticks both have a creamy (moisturizing) consistency and hydrating powders blended with ingredients that deliver moisture to the skin.• If your skin is oily, use oil-free liquid or powder foundation. It contains powders that absorb oil, leaving you with a matte, smooth finish.• If you have combination skin, strategically apply a powder foundation, which allows you to distribute more of the oil-absorbing makeup where you need it and less where you don't, without leaving visible lines as a liquid or stick foundation would.

• Try the color out on your jawline, not your wrist or hand. Remember to stand

outside to see if the color matches.

• A foundation with sunscreen is safe, but

you will still need to wear sunscreen under your foundation.

• A light foundation is perfect for work or the

weekend, while the shimmer finishing is great for

evenings.

HOW NATURE DIRECTLY BENEFITS US:

• Take the kids to the grocery store to look, feel and choose produce.

• Teach kids, and instill in them the understanding of exporting and importing. What we grow, in Saudi, what we can’t and how we export foods. This will also help with understanding economics.

• Teach kids about the atmosphere and air quality, pollution (from cars and factories) and how it affects our daily lives and health.

LEARNING MORE ABOUT OUR WORLD:

• Help children appreciate and understand desert nature and its landscape along with other types of natural landscapes found elsewhere.

• Take advantage of any animal sightseeing. When all else is unavailable turn on Animal Planet- they show entertaining and educational programs.

• Get involved in a proactive way when your child is studying biology.

Nurturing the love of

It’s very difficult for us Riyadh urbanites to appreciate nature in a personal way growing up. Unless someone creates their own little oasis in their villa, it’s something we mostly experience when we leave our city. It would be great if the public parks weren’t constantly being littered in and there were expansive stretches of grass to play on. But we have to find other ways to appreciate Allah’s blessings. Here are some different ways we can help ourselves and our children appreciate the importance of our natural environment.

TAKING THE EXTRA STEP:

• Grow some plants at home and let your children take care of them and learn what plants need to live.

• Get a pet and let the kids take care of it and teach them the importance of taking care of other living beings.

• Take your kids to horseback riding lessons and farms to interact with animals.

• Finally and most convincingly, obtaining the Quranic verses that call to appreciate nature, taking care of animals, not harming them and maintaining cleanliness.

It’s difficult to take care of something when we don’t know how important it is and how it relates to us. At this point, the small tips and tricks can be found in our other issues, like how to not be wasteful and such. However, we wanted to reach out to the root of the problem (pun not intended!) and help build the appreciation of nature from the bottom up so it can be long-lasting, even after children grow up.

1. Eggshells contain nutrients that help plants bloom. Crush some eggshells and place them into the soil or pot.

2. Plants can die if you don’t give them enough room to grow, so make sure those pots are big enough!

3. Although water is a necessity for plants to grow, too much water can kill certain plants.

4. Flowers such as orchids are sensitive to chemicals found in tap water. They can only be watered with high quality water (i.e. distilled or spring water).

5. If you bury banana peels under rosebushes, the potassium in the banana peels will nourish the rosebush and help it grow.

6. Eggshells within the soil prevent slugs and other pests from killing plants.
