Ames High Athletic Hall of Fame InducteesThe 19th Annual Ames High School Athletic Department’s Hall-of-Fame Induction Banquet was held September 16, 2010 in the Ames High School cafeteria. After social time and dinner, the award presentations began. New Hall-of-Fame members were also recognized at the Ames-Mason City football game on September 17th. Induction into the Hall-of-Fame is the highest honor the athletic department can bestow upon an individual.

Athlete. Students must have been graduated for at least 10 years and coaches must have been retired for at least two years to be eligible for this honor. Congratulations to all!!!!!

Julie Ollila Terry, ’97, as a four-sport athlete earned eleven varsity letters in volleyball, basketball, track and soccer during her athletic career at Ames High School. She was the Class 4A state champion in the 400 meter hurdles in 1995 and a member of the 1997 shuttle hurdle state champion relay team. She was all conference in volleyball, basketball and soccer. She also was an eleven time all-academic recipient before moving on to Iowa State University and earning four letters in track as a Big Cyclone.

Barb Bennett, ’97, was the first girl at Ames High to score over 1,000 points during her basketball career. She earned all-state honors both her junior and senior years and still has the honor of being the all-time leading scorer in girls’ basketball at Ames High with over 1,200 points during her prep basketball career. Also, a participant in track and volleyball during her early years, she went on to earn a basketball scholarship at the University of Northern Iowa where she played for three seasons.

Aaron Greving, ’99, excelled in three sports at Ames High School. A major contributor to one of Ames High’s finest football seasons ever in 1996, Aaron rushed for over 4,700 yards and scored 48 touchdowns over the course of three seasons. He had a highly successful track career as well during which he was the state 100 meter champion in both the 1997 and 1998 seasons. He was also a 3-year letter winner in baseball where he held an amazing .524 batting average during his sophomore season and belted a total of 32 homeruns during his career. He took his football talents to the University of Iowa and was named the MVP of the Alamo Bowl game in 2001.

Andy Kohler, 2000, was a four sport athlete which is a rarity at the 4A level of competition. His greatest claim to athletic prominence was breaking the 7 foot high jump barrier in the 1999 state track meet. He claimed all-state honors as a wide receiver during the 1999 football season. He also excelled that same year in baseball with a .418 batting average and eleven homeruns. He was a key contributor to the Ames High basketball season as well during his junior and senior seasons. He went on to Iowa State where he was a four time Big 12 Conference high jump place winner and a key member of Dan McCarney’s football teams that went to four bowl games.

Dale Tramp, Coach, is one of Ames High’s most successful football coaches and is considered a coaching legend by many of his former players. He started coaching at Ames High in 1967 and went on to accumulate an amazing 295 wins at the sophomore level--a 78 per cent winning average. During his forty plus seasons at Ames High, he had only three losing seasons. In his coaching, teaching and counseling career, he always felt that the top end kids would take care of themselves, so he focused his efforts on the middle and lower end students by treating them with fairness and respect. His success as a coach is not simply measured by his great won-loss record, but by how many of his players admire and respect him for his leadership during their high school careers.

The 2010 Ames girls’ swimming team won Ames High’s first ever swimming and diving team championship. Three school records and two state records were set, four event state championships were won and two events received “All American” status. Junior Maddie Bro was awarded the “State Athlete of the Year,” and the Ames coaching staff was awarded “State Coaching Staff of the Year”. A hearty congratulations to head coach Dan Flannery, his assistant coaches and the awesome girls’ swimming squad.

Class of 1955 Celebrate 55 Year Reunion

The class of 1955 met October 8-10, 55 years after graduation, for their eighth reunion in Ames with 43 classmates and 25 spouses/friends attending.

Events kicked off Friday afternoon with a tour of the ISU Alumni House of special interest to all Iowa State alums in the class. Next came a tour of Sigler Inc. an industry grown largely from its production of a wide variety of printed material plus many products with logos and slogans. Finally, an extended bus tour included familiar ground plus many of the expanded portions of the hometown. Out-of-towners were amazed at how much Ames has grown, especially north of the campus where we found a virtual new town within a town. Friday evening found the group at a barbeque supper facility, posing for a group

photo, and engulfed in endless catch-up conversations.

Bill Ripp served as tour guide for the Ames High school building Saturday morning. Class members always enjoy the stop at the trophy case locations where, like current Ames High football and

basketball teams, the 1955 teams are highlighted for their state championships. Also, the media center and the astro turf on the Little Cyclones football field were impressive.

Saturday night saw the group reconvening for dinner at the Ames Golf and Country Club. The program presented by Dennis Wendell ‘59, assisted by Alan Spohnheimer ‘67 (both of the Ames Historical Society), featured a slide show of people and places around Ames geared especially for the class’s era of the Fifties. All too quickly the final event arrived in north Ames with a delicious Sunday brunch. The class enjoys having an open mike at reunion events and this time virtually all attendees shared warm words about being back together. The 38 class members who have passed away were also recalled throughout the weekend.

This was actually the 13th gathering of the class. Starting in 1987, the year most of the class turned 50, birthday parties were added to the reunion schedule in five-year intervals. The first was in Ames followed by: 1992 -- Riverboat Cruise up the Mississippi; 1997 -- YMCA Camp of the Rockies, Colorado; and 2002 -- Tucson, Arizona (at the invitation of classmate Tucson Mayor Bob Walkup). In 2007 the class met in Seattle, billeted just blocks from the Space Needle, for nautical and land events.

Wonderful Women of ‘58

Class of 1985

This August seven of the “Wonderful Women of ‘58” spent a week near Williamsburg, Virginia. Here we are with Ben Franklin in Smithfield, Virginia, home of Smithfield Hams.

We had a wonderful time staying in a beautiful plantation manor house built in the 1800s right on the James River. We spent one day each in Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and touring two other plantation homes. One day four of us drove over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel to Maryland and Delaware and waded in the Atlantic Ocean at Delaware Seashore State Park. The other four drove to Virginia Beach to play in the water. Anne Strand Thompson joined us for our final day and went with us to tour Bacon’s Castle, a home built in colonial times, before the Revolutionary War.

The weekend of August 13 and 14, 2010, the Ames High Class of 1985 gathered for a 25 year Class Reunion. Despite record flooding in Ames, no drinkable water, and last minute changes of venues, the reunion was a big success. Friday night the class was to gather at the Olde Main Brewery, however, most Ames restaurants were forced to close as there was no water safe to drink or use for cooking or washing dishes. Olde Main was gracious enough to open DG’s Tap just for the Class of 1985 and an estimated 100+ classmates gathered and spent the evening catching up. On Saturday there was a golf tournament in Boone and a great time was had by all who attended. Saturday night a family picnic was held, that was

moved at the last minute from Brookside Park, which was completely under water, to Emma McCarthy Lee Park. Families gathered and reconnected. People came from many states, and we even had James Hockett, who was on leave from Afghanistan! After the picnic, many classmates were not ready to part ways, so they went on to party the night away. All who gathered agreed it was a great time and we hope to have more informal reunions just like this one-without the flooding of course!

It was the Iowa State University education that defined a path for Mary Dodds Schlick’s life journey.

Schlick, who serves as adjunct curator at the Maryhill Museum of Art in Goldendale, Washington, has been an important contributor to preserving the cultural heritage of Native American people of the Pacific Northwest and is one of the nation’s foremost authorities of Native arts of the interior Northwest. Schlick learned the techniques of basket making from Native elders of the Columbia Plateau and began training

younger women in their native crafts, using the skills in household equipment, journalism and applied arts she learned at Iowa State.

Although decades have passed since Schlick received her degree

from Iowa State, her scholarship has withstood the test of time in relevance and significance, especially for the Native tribes of the Northwest. According to the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute, a museum and research institute located on the Umatilla Indian Reservation in eastern Oregon, Schlick’s real achievement has been her contribution to the preservation of “ancient technologies.” Mary was entrusted as a bearer of culture. She helped assure that the technology would survive among new generations of Indian people through her writing, teaching and curation. She is very much the trusted and responsible source of knowledge.

Schlick, who received the ISU Alumni Association’s Merit Award in 1977, is a sustaining life member of the ISU Alumni Association. Mary graduated from Ames High School in 1943. Her husband, William “Bud” Schlick, was also a member of the AHS Class of 1943. Until his death, Bud worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and became a Deputy Director. He lived and worked with several tribes mostly in the Pacific Northwest.

We Get Letters...Dear Friends,After graduating from Ames High School in 1942, I went to Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas. I taught school near Ames for one year and then went on to Andover-Newton Seminary in Boston, Massachusetts. There I met and married Rufus Miller. We divorced in 1970. I then taught school in Tehran, Iran for two years. Then I taught school in Texas for two years. I now live in an assisted living facility in Pleasant Hill, Tennessee where we have lots of activities and many volunteer opportunities.

I am thankful for the education I received in Ames. College was a snap after Ames High.Enclosed is my check for a 2 year membership-Etha Davis Miller, ‘42

Thanks for your continued involvement with the newsletter. It’s greatly appreciated.

While on a Mediterranean Cruise in August, my husband, Dan, and I sat at random with a couple for an on-board wine tasting event. As introductions and conversation progressed, we discovered we’d had the good fortune to join another AHS alum and his wife. Bruce Bergland, ‘62 had just retired as Chancellor Emeritus at Indiana University Northwest. As you would imagine, we had a wealth of people, places and events to share. Cheers to being an Ames High Alum!-Sharon Smith Krieger, ‘54

Lincoln Elementary School Reunion

A Lincoln Elementary School reunion was held June 19th at the Heartland Senior Center in Ames. More than 100 people from Iowa and as far away as Arkansas and California attended. The reunion committee decorated with items reminiscent of school days and provided refreshments.

Lincoln Elementary School was opened in 1911 in Ames and closed its doors for classes in 1970. The gathering in June was the first of its kind for the school. We Get Letters...Dear Alumni Association,I just , finally read my August newsletter. Things get forwarded a bit belatedly from our upstate New York home and then tend to languish, unfortunately. I was saddened to read about Mary McNally’s passing. She was an indomitable factor in my teenage years. I am sure she made an impact on so many of our generation. I am kicking myself that I did not find time to look her up when I was dealing with my brother Hugh’s estate a year ago. I did manage to see Bill Ripp. I hope that the enclosed check could be used as a memorial to Miss McNally and/or perhaps to help some aspiring English major to carry on her legacy. I still see her expressive hands gesturing as she demonstrated a point. Despite all else that I toyed with as potential careers, when I finally “grew up” and went into teaching, I carried part of Miss McNally with me in each class I taught.-Laura Lowrie Sarappo, ‘67

Dear Friends,Enclosed is a check in memory of Mary McNally. She was one of my favorite teachers, and I think we were the first English class she taught at Ames High (1941-42). She was so young and beautiful (all the boys had crushes on her) and had a great sense of humor. In later years, she was my son’s advisor at Ames High. What precious memories I have of those years.-Dee Knight Oates, ‘42-

To the Ames High Alumni Association,Please accept my check for a 3-year membership, plus an additional amount in memory of my mother, Ila F. Woodburn Wells, AHS Class of 1926. Mom passed away in June, 2009 at the age of 100 and a half, and to the end she enjoyed reading the alumni newsletter.

I enjoyed reading the articles about Ames High athletics from the 50’s--you can imagine the names were familiar in our Grand Avenue household. I was saddened to read of the death of Mary McNally, my high school World Literature teacher and a vibrant and engaging instructor.-Mary Wells Karakash, ‘63

Dear Friends, I’m writing to remember Richie Hayward, AHS Class of ‘64, who died on August 11, 2010. Richie was perhaps the best-known alumnus of Ames High, although he was better known in rock music circles and by many fans abroad than by most people in this country.

Richie was considered one of the best drummers in the world. Although best known for being a founding member of the band Little Feat, he performed with several bands. Richie played on recordings by such diverse artists as

Eric Clapton, Travis Tritt, Tom Waits, Taj Mahal, Barbara Streisand, Buddy Guy, Arlo Guthrie, Carly Simon, Bob Seger and many others. Richie left Ames soon after he graduated from AHS and headed to Southern California. Little Feat was formed by Richie and a colleague in 1969. He continued to play drums for the band; his last concert with Little Feat was July 11, 2010; one month before his death.

Richie was diagnosed with severe liver disease in the summer of 2010. He was hoping to obtain a liver for transplant, but that was not to be. He lived in British Columbia until his death.

Although I was 10 years younger than Richie, I vividly remember his generosity of spirit as a young man in our neighborhood in Ames. He was the oldest kid in the neighbor-hood. When we played softball in a neighbor’s yard, I remember being scared of “big” Richard when he hit the ball and ran the bases. He was better equipped for the game than many of us punk kids were, and he could easily have knocked us over as he ran the bases.

Richard (as we knew him in the early 60’s) was kind to others in his teenage years. One time my friends, my sister and I put on a little “show” for neighbors and friends in our front yard on 21st Street. Richie played background drums for us, hiding behind a blanket hanging from our front porch. We have a home movie of that show, which culminated when Richard opened the “curtain” (blanket) and ran out to the center of our front yard to take his bows. He was clearly a very good-natured teenager.

There is a lot of information about Richie on the internet. One bio about him is on http://drummerworld.com/drummers/Richie_Hayward.html. There are also many videos of Richie playing drums on youtube.com.

I remember fondly the young Richie and hope others have had the chance to read about him and recognize the loss of a great talent.Best regards, Tracey Stoll, ‘74

P.S. If anyone knows where Richie’s mother, Bea, or his brother, Gary, or sister, Linda, are now, please let me know. [email protected]. Thank you.

Dear AHSAA Enclosed is my check for dues and some help with the budget. Your excellent work is greatly appreciated. -G. Donald McCord, ‘40

The Flood of 2010 and Ames’ Changing Landscape

Thank Someone Who Has Touched Your Life...

My cousin in Burlington sent me a picture from the Burlington Hawkeye showing AHS baseball coach Eric Bappe ’90 standing by a log, 8 feet long by 12 inches in diameter. It was near the backstop on Ray Smalling Field at Brookside Park. It had floated over the six foot high outfield fence and was stopped by the much higher backstop. It gives you an idea of the depth of the flood. My cousin remarked that Brookside was flooded in 1943-44 when she was in Ames. More recent floods have been in 1993 and 2008.

Businesses along South Duff Avenue were devastated. Jim Howe ’80 owns Howe’s Welding, a block north, Jeff Bundy ’85 has 20th Century Bowling, further north is Jerry Jones ’61 office and across the street Rick Thompson ’78 has an accounting business. The only one of these that will not reopen is the bowling alley. Also not reopening is Happy Joe’s Pizza, the Fox Lounge and the building that formerly housed O’Malley & McGees.

Also, completely leveled now is the old Pizza Hut building with the miniature golf behind it. The level of this property has been raised in the past few weeks. Therein lies the

problem with South Duff Avenue property. Businesses that build anew raise the level of their land. Old businesses that remain face increasing depths of water with each flood.

Changing landscapes in Ames, unrelated to the flood include the razing of Old Fareway at 5th and Kellogg to make room for expansion of First United Methodist Church. Also completely gone is Lincoln Lodge Motel on East Lincoln Way. New on the horizon is Hy-Vee gas at Lincoln Way and Grand. Hy-Vee Gas also has a new location near its west Ames store.

Another victim of the flood was Hilton Coliseum, the venue where Iowa State plays basketball, volleyball and holds wrestling meets. The first sixteen women’s volleyball matches were moved to Ames High School. Hilton had fourteen feet of water over its floor. The basketball floor was floating on the water. The damage was extensive.

So when you return to Ames expect to see some changes on the landscape.

I recently opened the August Alumni Newsletter and very sadly read the article of the passing of Mary McNally. As stated in the article, she was an irreplaceable mentor. I was very uninvolved in school my senior year, majoring in “hanging out with my friends”, going no where in life, living day to day with no future plans other than working at the corner gas station.

One day Mary pulled me from class and introduced me to a recruiter from a Tech school in Des Moines. She knew I had a passion for fixing things and thought a career in the Electronics Industry would motivate me. I signed up and in 2 ½ years got my Associates Degree and started a career in Biomedical Electronics.

I started my own business 26 years ago and have employed up to 72 people, none of this would have been possible without her. Throughout the years I have thought of Mary and wanted to personally thank her for her guidance. Sadly, I never made the time to find her. This I will regret for the rest of my life. In moments of reflection, I realize that rarely do we express to the important people of our life just how grateful we are to have known them and let them know how they have made a positive difference in our life.

Take the time; make the effort to show them.

The people that get to know us best, from our virtues to our flaws, are our parents and teachers. They have the greatest influence in our life because they are the people we see the most and have the opportunity to influence our decisions and try to guide us to make the right choices.

Mary McNally had had a huge impact on my life and it is because of her that I am the person I am today. She helped me to make one of the most important decisions, choose between pumping gas or getting a higher education and set out on a career in the Biomedical Field. One day she sat down with me and told me how important it is to have trust in myself with everything I do, not to be afraid of making wrong choices or decisions, learn from life’s lessons. Adversity will surface in every life. How we meet it makes a difference.

One of my favorite quotes is: “A teacher affects eternity; she can never tell where her influence stops.” (Henry Adams)

Thank you Mary from the bottom of my heart and may God have many blessings for you.

Gold Star Hall

Richard Trump

Gold Star Hall is the “memorial” in the Memorial Union at Iowa State University. In World War I , when a family had a son or daughter in the service, they displayed a card with a simple blue star in their window. When a life was lost, the card with the blue star was changed to one with a gold star--hence the name, Gold Star Hall. Gold Star Hall embodies the memoriam that the entire Memorial Union building represents.

This quotation by poet John Drinkwater is inscribed at the north door: For thee they died Master and Maker, God of Right The Soldier dead are at Thy gate Who kept the spears of honor bright And Freedom’s house inviolate.

When the Memorial Union opened in 1928, the names of 117 Iowa Staters who died in World War I were carved into the walls.

Early in 1969, ten bronze plaques bearing the names of 369 Iowa State men who died in military service during World War II were mounted on the two huge bronze doors that stood at the doorway between the vestibule and gold Star Hall. The bronze doors were later removed and in l984, the names from World War II, Korea and Vietnam were engraved into the limestone. In 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008 2009 and now, in 2010, additional names were engraved for World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Somalia. When the time is right, the names from the Global War on Terror will be engraved.

This year the ceremony was held at 3:15 P.M. on Thursday, November 11th in the Memorial Union’s Great Hall and profiled one serviceman each from World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam. The World War II serviceman honored this year was Major Russell M. Vifquain, Jr., a 1936 graduate of Ames High School. Russell attended Iowa State College majoring in engineering. He was a navigator on a B29 Superfortress who died May 14. 1945 in the South Pacific when his crippled plane went down after a bombing raid to Japan. Russell, Jr. was a member of the Collegiate Presbyterian Church in Ames, Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Iowa State and grew up at 524 Forest Glen in Ames. His parents were Professor Russell Vifquain of Iowa State’s College of Agriculture and Zola Vifquain. His sister, Elaine Vifquain ‘45 Bath, still resides in Ames.

Each year, more than a million people pass through this memorial. Students understand its purpose and many pause on the benches during the course of their busy daily lives. Gold Star Hall remains an active memorial.

This quotation is inscribed in the vestibule: A memorial to the six thousand Iowa State College men and women who offered their lives during the World War in the cause of human liberty and free government.

Richard Trump, teacher of sophomore biology at Ames High School for 31 years between 1946 and 1977, died November 1, 2010 in Des Moines. Mr. Trump was passionate about science, teaching, writing, and photography. He wrote the textbook that was used for many years in biology class. He was instrumental in preserving the AHS Prairie where, years ago, students were introduced to “ecology” before the term

was adopted in common culture. He also served as faculty sponsor for Science Seminar, an extracurricular group.

After retiring from Ames High in 1977 he taught at Iowa State University for several years. Mr. Trump lived and

loved learning and teaching nature. He wrote prolifically for science journals and authored two personal narratives, Bees and Their Keepers and Fall Fever, an insightful and amusing journal of his teaching experience.

Mr. Trump was a keen observer, critical thinker, and a humble philosopher. In Fall Fever, he writes: “I was allowed to teach, encouraged to teach. And, because I was permitted to teach as I thought best, I didn’t do it as well as I knew how—I was having too much fun. I am most grateful for that freedom.” He was 98 years old. Pictures, recollections, comments can be seen and made at www.rftlet.wordpress.com.
