RESEARCH

0% of Budgeted Time

ACTIVITIES AND PHILOSOPHY The unifying aspect of Dr. Park’s research is the intent to improve the abilities of business managers to make informed decisions within the food and fiber industry. From early career efforts in consumer demand, Dr. Park expanded his research across the entire food supply chain, in time working with retailers, distributors, processors, assemblers and producers. This has given him great insight into the competition within and between various sectors of this industry. His current focus on farmer owned cooperatives benefits greatly from this perspective.

Dr. Park firmly believes that all the research within his department can be applied to the needs of his

business clientele if properly framed and given the correct context. As such, he has partnered with a variety of researchers with expertise in transportation, sales, econometrics, markets, and more.

In addition, Dr. Park believes that all research can benefit multiple audiences when presented in the proper format. His philosophy is that high quality research should extend beyond peer review to the

benefit of lay audiences. Thus, multiple forms and outlets of publication are required to receive the full benefit of research. A university has a tremendous value of knowledge that could go unrealized if not managed properly.

Dr. Park has been instrumental in securing $852,787 in grants and gifts to support his

programming.

Page !7ECONOMIC IMPACTS In addition to the aforementioned research, an additional effort deserves particular mention. At the request of his clientele, Dr. Park, his colleague Dr. Rebekka Dudensing, and the Texas Agricultural Cooperative Council, have joined to provide Texas cooperatives a means of sharing the story of their economic worth to their owners, communities, and legislators. Economic impact analyses are combined with other qualitative and strategic factors in these reports. Since its advent in 2009, some 28 cooperatives have been assisted by this effort.

Results from this effort have given legislators and community leaders across the state a heightened awareness of the importance of cooperative business to rural economies. Additionally, cooperative managers have been provided a means of benchmarking their performance against their peers. Dr. Park was selected to lead this effort due to his ability to conduct industry-focused research and extend it to a lay audience in a manner that is easily assimilated and usable.

Dr. Park is an award winning teacher, whose courses are known for student engagement through discussion, activities, applications to real world examples, and the participation of industry professionals. His course evaluations for both undergraduate and graduate classes are consistently above the department average. While instruction and discourse are important, Dr. Park is an adherent to the philosophy of learning by doing.

For example, challenged with teaching a course on agricultural cooperation, Dr. Park organized his class into teams that are governed by students using cooperative business principles. Teams elect leaders from among their members, make assignments to accomplish course objectives, and distribute points to members according to team created bylaws. In this way, students experience, first-hand, the principles discussed in class.

Dr. Park believes that for students to be fully engaged in their course work, they need to be reassured that the topic is important, the material is stimulating, and the instructor is striving to help them succeed. It is his belief that instructors are first and foremost mentors and leaders. As such he strives to treat students as befitting a mentor-mentee relationship—with respect and a genuine concern for the wellbeing of the pupil.

GRADUATE ADVISING Since his acceptance into the graduate faculty in 2002, Dr. Park has mentored 21 graduate students. Of these he has served as chair or co-chair for 2 doctoral students and 7 masters students. Two of his masters students have received an Applebaum Award from the Food Distribution Research Society in recognition of their thesis work.

INTERNSHIPS In response to a request from industry, Dr. Park, in collaboration with the Texas Agricultural Cooperative Council, established an internship program that recruits students from six different universities. The Cooperative Internship Program strives to replenish the aging population of management talent in rural Texas businesses. The program has successfully retained key talent for development in future management positions.

EXTENSION AND OUTREACH

75% of Budgeted Time

ACTIVITIES AND PHILOSOPHY As an extension specialist and the Roy B. Davis Professor of Agricultural Cooperation, Dr. Park serves a unique clientele. His mandate, simply put, is to improve the lives of Texans by helping cooperatively owned businesses to be profitable, viable enterprises by providing leadership and education in marketing and management best practices.

Dr. Park accomplishes this through four basic initiatives that are supported with applied research and the development and presentation of targeted educational materials.

1. director, manager, and employee training2. strategic planning3. evaluating market opportunities and business

initiatives4. disseminating knowledge about the value of

the cooperative business model

TRAINING Texas is home to approximately 160 agricultural cooperatives that are networked through a trade association, the Texas Agricultural Cooperative Council (TACC). Dr. Park works closely with TACC in the development and execution of its educational programming as well as the programming of individual cooperatives and other groups. In any given year, this typically includes support of 2 director development programs, 2 board chair conferences, a manager conference, a combined manager/director conference, an annual

meeting for managers and directors, multiple bookkeeper conferences, board meetings and more. Additionally, Dr. Park makes contact with individuals and producer groups through phone, email, site visits, social media, and distributed materials.

In the course of these extension duties, Dr. Park has made more than 30,000 total educational contacts over the past 10 years. This includes 250 invited presentations to audiences totaling more than 7,000 people. This is significant when considering the concentration of the industry (and therefore a smaller clientele) at this point of the supply chain.

STRATEGIC PLANNING Dr. Park has facilitated and participated in the strategic planning for 28 different cooperatives including cotton gins, warehouses, sugar mills, oil mills, juice factories, farm stores, grain elevators and others.

BUSINESS EVALUATION Dr. Park assists producer groups (recent examples include olive growers, pomegranate growers, and organic vegetable producers) as they consider starting a cooperative business. He also assists his clientele with general business feasibility.

EDUCATION ON COOPERATIVES Dr. Park advises producer groups on the formation of cooperative businesses. In addition, he provides a needed voice among academics, legislators, and business leaders in support of the cooperative business model.
