We LOVE Martin McDonagh! This is the third McDonah play at the MET (Cripple of Inishmaan, Lt. of Inishmore) and the first that is not from the Aran Islands series. McDonagh always has an interesting way of juxtaposing humor and drama, much in the same way as Sam Shepard and Tracy Letts. There is darkness, truth, universal themes, and comedy…all rolled into one! You may be familiar with Martin McDonagh’s film work (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, 3 Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri) and I’m happy to say that we haven’t completely lost McDonagh to Hollywood as his

new play, Hangmen, is running in New York through early March. Next up for the MET is Rapture, Blister, Burn. Ms. Magazine says, “If you are a feminist, are interested in feminism or are in a relationship with a feminist, you need to see the play RAPTURE, BLISTER, BURN…” The NY Times calls the play “…intensely smart, immensely funny.” After Rapture, we close the season with Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge – smake sure to see both! If you are unfamiliar with MET, we have a resident ensemble of over 35 artists, a staff of 8, and 15 board members who dedicate massive energy as they pour their souls into every corner of our work. Our ensemble, board and staff are committed to interesting, entertaining, provocative and joyful theatre art. As an ensemble we work together to build theatre, which sparks audience dialogue, which builds community. We are in our 20th season of producing exciting, quality, professional theatre in downtown Frederick! We began our journey in June of 1998 producing the MET created Finally Heard! Feminine Heroes of an Uncivil War and have produced over 120 mainstage productions. If you are a local, or just visiting, we hope you have a chance to explore our great hometown; there are over 40 restaurants within walking distance, plenty of places to shop, parking is cheap or free, and there are many, many options for nightlife after the show. We are so thankful that you have made the choice to spend some time with us; we hope you have a great time at MET and enjoy the show!

As a playwright, Martin McDonagh is known to begrudgingly illuminate the potential for hope even in the darkest of places. In this macabre comedy, there’s a glimmer in the end where we, at least, hope for hope. On the surface, it appears that McDonagh is telling a story about a writer against the totalitarian state and vice versa. The underbelly contains more nightmarish revelations. Toby Lichtig of the Times Literary Supplement writes of The Pillowman, “With his sharp insights into character, the nature of human suffering, and the juxtaposition of horror and absurdity, McDonagh has produced an engrossing

theatrical spectacle.” Certainly, this Kafkaesque world provides the backdrop for McDonagh to explore the deep recesses of each character’s plight – whether torturer or recipient of cruel acts – and how they navigate their present dilemmas based on their moral code, the roots of which could be traced back to their twisted childhood. As Ben Brantley’s New York Times review pointed out, “Mr. McDonagh is not preaching the power of stories to redeem or cleanse or to find a core of solid truth hidden among life’s illusions. And he is certainly not exalting the teller of stories as a morally superior being.” He may more aptly demonstrate that to live is to suffer, and even suffer horribly. Yet, somewhere within the tangled web of life, whether working in a totalitarian state or writing the darkest of adult tales that would make even the Grimm brothers blush, there may emerge a spark of light to help us carry on. Perhaps Elysa Gardner of USA Today, put it best, “Pillowman is the most brutal work yet from the celebrated author…and also his most tender, examining how the redeeming and restorative powers of love and creativity can mitigate or be undone by the darker impulses.”
