SRDC Mission Statement: to educate members & encourage participation in the democratic process and in the Democratic Party.
Location: Santa Rosa Veterans’ Memorial Building,1351 Maple Ave, Santa Rosa (across from the So. Co. Fairgrounds)
Our Speaker this month:
Dr. Nick Anton, Dr. Nick Anton, MDMD Topic: Topic: SingleSingle--payer Healthcarepayer Healthcare
Dr. Nick Anton, retired Internist from Sonoma County, has been active
for many years with Physicians for National Health Program. Through
PNHP, doctors in California and across the nation have been focused on bringing universal health care to all
Americans. He brings historical perspective as well as familiarity with past attempts that have failed.
His perspective is especially timely now that there is another opportunity to advance single-payer in
California, where the Healthy California Act (SB 562) has been introduced. Senator Mike McGuire is a co-
sponsor. SB 562 would provide universal health care for all state residents regardless of immigration status
and take private insurance companies out of the health-care equation. It calls for comprehensive health care
coverage for all residents of California with no premium, copayment, coinsurance, deductible, nor any other
form of cost sharing, for all covered benefits. Dr. Anton brings a unique
perspective, as a health care provider, who has worked toward a single-
payer system for years. (See page 3 for an overview of SB562)

SRDC Mission Statement: to educate members & encourage participation in the democratic process and in the Democratic Party.
A t the April meeting, Pat Sabo, staff representative from State Senator Mike McGuire’s office, gave an
update on legislative action in Sacramento. Of particular interest was the fate of Senate Bill 562 (SB
562), which had just passed the Senate’s Health Committee earlier that day. Over 1000 people packed the
Committee hearing, with all the NO voices coming from—you guessed it, the health care insurers and the
Chamber of Commerce. Senators Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego) are the
authors of the bill and our own Senator Mike McGuire has signed on as sponsor.
As promised, here are the highlights of the Healthy California Act:
Covers Californians for all medical care, including inpatient, outpatient, emergency care, dental, vision,
mental health, and nursing home care
Eliminates Co-pays and insurance deductibles
Californians can choose their doctor from a full list of health care providers, not a narrow network chosen
by insurance companies
Referrals are not required for a member to see any eligible provider
Californians are covered when they travel
Physicians and nurses will make decisions about care, and have the ability to override the computers or
clinical practice guidelines in the best interest of the patient
Healthy California will be governed by a nine-member, unpaid board, appointed by the governor and legis-
lature and a public advisory committee of doctors, nurses, other health care providers and consumers.
You can read the full text of the bill at OnePlanMyChoice.com
What’s next:
The bill is now before the Senate Appropriations committee, which Senator Lara also chairs. A fiscal study is
underway. The bill will come to the full Senate for a vote after passing through the Appropriations committee.
Once the bill has passed the Senate, then, of course, it begins it’s travels through the Assembly.
Please let your voice be heard in Sacramento on this bill. There are a number of Senators who are still unde-
cided and will need all public pressure we can bring to bear. Also, please note that in our area, Assembly-
member Jim Wood is the Chair of the Assembly Health Committee and we need him to be supportive of this
bill in bringing it before his committee.
SRDC Endorsement of SB 562 – Single Payer bill for California.
At the conclusion of the presentation including Q & A, we will be asking members to consider endorsing SB
562. In April your Executive Board endorsed this bill and sent a letter to Senator Lara’s office. Concern is
heightened due to the U.S. Congress passing “Trumpcare” and the effect that will have on health care for our
country’s population. You may remember that the Single Payer bill was passed in our state’s legislature in Cal-
ifornia’s recent past but was vetoed by then-governor Schwarzenegger.

other tactics (that’s known) but he warned against
complacency and advised people to be prepared.
Know-your-rights efforts are happening all over the
Bay Area, helping people to know exactly how to
react in any situation. “The fear—it’s the uncertain-
ty,” Garcia said, “It’s not IF, but WHEN.”
D ancing with the “Stars” By Eileen Bill
We thoroughly enjoyed watching
Vice-Mayor, Jack Tibbetts, and
others as they competed in the se-
cond annual "Dancing with the
Stars and Stripes" ballroom dance
competition. This event, on April
22nd at the Jackson Theater, Sono-
ma County Day School, was a benefit for the Veter-
ans and the Veterans Resource Centers of America.
There were 10 couples participating, including
Collette Michaud, founder of the Children's Muse-
um, and Herman Hernandez, school board trustee,
doing many styles (tangos, western) of ballroom
dancing. Each couple consisted of a local amateur
"star" and a professional dancer "pro." It was a very
lively and entertaining evening watching such expert
and masterful dancing, which clearly required many
hours of successful training for the "stars" together
with the "pros!"
Veterans Resource Centers provide services that in-
clude homeless prevention and re-housing, employ-
ment training, transitional housing, behavioral health
treatment, nutrition services, case management, per-
manent supportive housing and resource centers.
Over $85,000 was raised through this event for veter-
ans.
A pril Meeting
During the business portion of the April meet-
ing, members got updates on
the Measure C campaign and
on the activities of So. Co. La-
tino Democratic club (new
meeting days) and OFA
(phone banks, etc) and Mary
Watts (Wine Country Young
Dems) announced she would
be in the Human Race on be-
half of Community Action
Partnership and needed sponsors. Clio Tarazi an-
nounced scheduled volunteer trainings for people
who would be tabling, gathering signatures and reg-
istering voters over coming months.
Dorothy Battenfeld, SRJC Trustee, gave an up-
date on events affecting “Dreamers” and others. She
reported the JC has passed a resolution to be a “safe
haven”; a Dream Center has been established on
campus and she gave an update on SB 54 (which
would prevent CA law enforcement from cooperat-
ing with ICE).
Pat Sabo, Representative from State Senator
Mike McGuire’s office, gave an update on the legis-
lative actions: the Gas Tax (SB1) passed & will
bring $12 million to Sonoma County; SB 790 will
prohibit physicians from taking “bribes” and gifts
from pharmaceutical companies; SB 562 Single-
payer bill (which MCGuire has cosponsored) has
passed Senate health committee and goes to the full
Senate in the next few weeks (after the budget com-
mittee). This month’s speaker will be addressing the
current situation with single-payer legislation and
you can read a synopsis of the bill, provided by
McGuire’s office, on page 3 of this newsletter.
Our keynote speaker, Juan
Garcia, talked of his work
with the United Farmwork-
ers’ Union and hardships that
workers—both legal and ille-
gal immigrants—face in their
daily lives. So far, in Sonoma
County, there have yet to be
any reported ICE raids or any

marchers and those attending the Square opening.
Y es on Measure C events:
Fundraiser at the Glaser Center On May 3rd, the “Yes on Measure C” campaign
held its final fundraiser of the campaign to pass the
rent control measure in Santa Rosa. With great food
and a good turnout, supporters mingled, planned and
talked about the campaign, the canvassing efforts and
their hopes for success. Several speakers gave ac-
counts of the kinds of oppressive rents and landlord
abuses that residents are experiencing everyday. The
evening ended with a group photo in the Glaser Cen-
ter’s courtyard, as we (tried to) form a giant C!
March to Registrar of Voters Several people from our club gathered with others on
May 16th at SRJC for Yes On Measure C march to
the Registrar of Voters office. This march was spon-
sored by the newly-formed SRJC Democratic Club!
We received lots of “honks” of support along the
route. Marchers then dropped off their ballots
marked Yes on Measure C!
Don’t forget that our club is slated to canvass on
Saturday, May 27th—the last Saturday before the
GOTV weekend. WE NEED YOU TO HELP! See
the information on page 6 of this newsletter.
P eople’s Climate March
by Nanci Hoban
On Saturday April 29, the People’s/ Climate
march celebrated unity within the community and
concern for the care of the Earth. From noon until
2:00, a number of SRDC members joined with sever-
al thousand people, to brave a very hot day in Rose-
land, listening to and applauding speakers from
many perspectives and sci-
entific causes. Their theme
was respect for all people
and respect for our air, wa-
ter and planet.
At about 2:15, lead by a
talented group of Native
American dancers in native
costume, the crowd lined
up to march from Sebasto-
pol Road to the new Court-
house Square. Many car-
ried signs (and we had our
SRDC signs, too!) express-
ing ideas
about our
current Federal government’s atti-
tudes toward immigrants and the
climate. With Santa Rosa Police
and some Highway Patrol on hand
to clear the way, the march was
loud but very organized. Along the route, many driv-
ers honked horns and some bystanders cheered in
support. Drums echoed as the march continued under
the Santa Rosa Mall, turned down B Street and up

EXECUTIVE BOARD REPORT:
From President Sandy Reynolds
Board Activities
The Executive Board continues to be very active in
local issues. We tabled (registered voters, promoted
Measure C) along with the SCDP at several events
including the April 29th Pueblo Unido, People’s March.
Our club’s rally signs were visible in the march from
Roseland to Courthouse Square and our tabling efforts
continued at the May 5th Cinco de Mayo event and the
Petaluma’s Community Engagement Fair. The May 3rd
Measure C event and Congressman Mike Thompson’s
May 7th event were also attended by our members. Check
out the photos of some of these events on pages 4 & 5.
Thank you to all of you who participated!
Board Vacancy and Election
As announced at last month’s meeting, we have a
vacancy on the Executive Board for a Member-at-large
Alternate. We will hold the election for that position at
our May meeting during the Business section. The Board
is nominating Lupe Hernandez for this position.
However, “Members in Good Standing” will also be
eligible for nomination at this meeting.
Leah Gold for Healdsburg City Council
On June 6th there is an election in Healdsburg for City
Council. The Sonoma County Democratic Party has
endorsed one candidate, Leah Gold. Please share this
information with everyone you know who lives in
Healdsburg. Ms Gold is not only highly qualified but she
is also the only Democrat running for this office. As
you know our goal as Democrats is to elect Democrats at
every level of office, locally, countywide, statewide and
nationally! Unfortunately, a number of our Democratic
elected leaders endorsed another candidate who is NOT a
Democrat before Ms Gold entered the race. We therefore
strongly request that you do what you can to assure we
help to add a very needed Democrat to this city council.
California Democratic Convention
The California Democratic Party, which includes
delegates from all counties in our state, will be meeting
May 19-21st. Several of our members are delegates from
the Sonoma County Democratic Party and will be
representing us there. We will have a short report on the
results of that convention during our business section on
May 24th.

SRDC Mission Statement: to educate members & encourage participation in the democratic process and in the Democratic Party.
T he success of the Santa Rosa Democratic Club depends on volunteers to meet the demands of our active
club. As we approach the summer months, there will be even more demands on our club’s membership
to do tabling, voter registration and other tasks at venues such as the Wednesday Night Market in downtown
Santa Rosa, as well as the County Fair. Recently, David Cahill, a relatively new member of our club who is
also a member of the Political Organizing Committee for the Sonoma County Democratic Party, offered his
services. Following some discussion and a vote (via email) the Executive Board approved the appointment of
David to the position of Volunteer Coordinator. This is very exciting news for the Board and our club, as we
work to mobilize our membership, in this time of Trump.
[Note: We are always looking for SRDC field reporters! If you attend a rally or other event, please consider writing up
a very brief report—200 words or so would be great—and send along any photos, too! Send by the first weekend of
