JRA-1 - Adaptive Optics

OPTICON is funded by the European Commission under Contract RII3-CT-2004-001566

JRA 1 gathers together expert European teams in the field of Adaptive Optics for astronomy. It has two objectives. 1) Develop the concept and designs for 2nd generation Adaptive Optics facilities (e.g Extreme Adaptive Optics for Planet Searching, Ground Layer and Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics) which by 2010-11 will equip existing 8-10 m telescopes such as the VLT, the LBT and the GTC. 2) Develop the key technologies necessary to maintain the competitiveness of our large astronomical facilities.

The enabling technologies JRA-1 has an aggressive R&D programme:

• 1m large Deformable Mirror (DM) & very thin glass shell demonstration

1.1m VLT Adaptive secondary(Microgate - ADS, Italy) equipped with 1170 actuators and an hexapod essential for the GLAO system using laser tomography.

• Multi-Conjugate AO for LBT:Ground Layer wavefront sensor design

• VLT Extreme AO for Planet search

•VLT Ground Layer & tomography AO

• Micro Deformable Mirror (MDM)60 electromagnetic actuator MDM (Patent)19 actuator electrostatic MDM

• High Order wavefront sensing exp.:

Thin Glass shell

OPTICON - The Optical Infrared Coordination Network for Astronomy

Participants:•European Southern

Observatory•INAF Arcetri•MPIA Heidelberg•INSU-LAOG and LAM•ONERA•NOVA•Univ. Durham

The development of this DM is the largest worldwide. It is an essential component for the VLT Extreme AO system and Ground Layer AO.
