4 ETToday The Charles Kelman Award and Lecture is a highlight of the Annual Hellenic Society Meeting.This year’s recipient is Robert Osher MD, Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Cincinnati, Ohio, US, and Medical Director Emeritus, Cincinnati Eye Institute.The award was presented by Anne Kelman, the widow of Charles Kelman. In his Kelman Lecture,‘Challenges, Complications and Technology’, Dr Osher presented a potpourri of challenging cases and examples of complication management. He illustrated his presentation with one of the high quality videos for which he has become well known. One highlight of his talk was a description of new technology, not yet available, for microcoaxial phacoemulsification with torsional ultrasound using a newly designed tip. Dr Osher also paid tribute to the pioneering surgeon for whom the lecture was named, Charles Kelman MD, PhD. “Charlie Kelman was one of my heroes. He was a great inspiration to me as a young surgeon and over time we became very close friends,” he said. Dr Osher was the founder of the Cincinnati Eye Institute, an organisation that has grown from a small solo practice into a world centre for clinical ophthalmology research.The Institute now provides subspecialty care in the fields of anterior segment reconstruction, cataract surgery, comprehensive ophthalmology, corneal and external disease, glaucoma, neuro- ophthalmology, ocular oncology, ophthalmic emergency services, ophthalmic plastic reconstructive surgery and orbital cosmetic surgery, refractive surgery, uveitis and vitreoretinal diseases and surgery. Dr. Osher is a graduate of University of Rochester Medical School and served his residency at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. He completed three Fellowships in Miami and at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia prior to receiving Board Certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has been elected into the honour societies of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha and has also received the Heed Ophthalmic Fellowship Award, Maumenee Award, Rayner Award from England, Canon Award from Japan, the Senior Academy Honour Award, the Binkhorst Medal, the Gold Medal Award from Australia, and the Lim Award from China. He has achieved worldwide recognition as a leader in cataract surgery. He has designed many of the contemporary intraocular lenses and instruments used in cataract surgery, in addition to developing new techniques in this subspecialty. Dr. Osher has become well known for his skill at surgical video production. His videos have won first-prize honours at the American, European, Asian and South American Cataract Societies and he has been awarded the coveted Grand Prize in both the ASCRS and ESCRS International competitions. He has presented lectures in more than 35 countries. He is the Editor of the Video Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery. “The Video Journal is my second full time job. I have heard from surgeons around the world that the Journal has helped them develop their skills, and I always find that tremendously gratifying.” Dr Osher also has lifelong interest in sports. Over the years he has coached countless baseball and basketball teams at the high school level, taking several teams to state and national championships.
