Dr. S. Sandeep is the new TEAKNET Coordinator
The International Steering Committee
of TEAKNET unanimously selected
Dr. S. Sandeep, Scientist, Kerala
Forest Research Institute as the
TEAKNET Coordinator upon the
superannuation of Dr. Thulasidas in
May 2019, who was with TEAKNET
since 2013.
Dr. Sandeep specialises in Soil
Science and is an expert in soil
chemistry and carbon modelling.
Under the aegis of UN – REDD programme funded by FAO, he was
instrumental in developing a database of tree volume and biomass
allometric equations in South Asia and the quality control protocols
for assessing these models. He has done extensive studies on teak
plantations in the Western Ghats of peninsular India, evaluated their
productivity and carbon storage potential and analyzed the effects of
continuous long rotation teak plantations on land degradation.

ITTO Teak Mekong Project Launched at Bangkok, Thailand
23-25 April 2019
Considering the prominent position of Teak in the global timber market and its potential to contribute to
national economic growth and local livelihoods, the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO), Japan
launched the teak project entitled “Enhancing the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Teak Forests
and Legal and Sustainable Wood Supply Chains in the Greater Mekong Sub-Region”. The first stage of
activity in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) covering 5 countries, viz., Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar,
Thailand and Vietnam, commenced in its activity since March 2019. The project is funded by the Federal
Republic of Germany through the federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture for three years from 2019 to 2022.
The aim of the project is to assist these countries to conserve
unique natural teak forests and their gene pools; increase incomes
for forest communities and smallholders; improve wood processing
and marketing; and enhance regional collaboration and cooperation
in teak management.
TEAKNET is also involved in this project and handles the role of
information management and networking, support the
dissemination of the outreach material and publishing bi-monthly
online project newsletters. The first issue of the newsletter was
released through the TEAKNET Website highlighting the launching
ceremony and the Inception Workshop report. You can download
the Teak Mekong Newsletter from our website.

New Release
Forest Futures
Sustainable pathways for forests, landscapes and people in the Asia- Pacific region
FAO, Bangkok 2019
FAO of the United Nations Regional office for Asia and the Pacific, Bangkok has released the Asia Pacific Forestry
Outlook Study III during APFW 2019 at Incheon, South Korea. This publication presents scenarios and a
strategic analysis to help policymakers and other actors understand the future roles of forests and the forest
sector within the broader economy and how best to address the challenges ahead in the Asia Pacific region.
The report addresses two key questions:
1. Taking into account the major drivers of change, what will forests and forestry look like in 2030
and 2050?
2. What robust actions should be taken today and in coming years to realize an aspirational future
for forests?
The region’s previous two forest-sector outlook studies (in
1998 and 2010) have been contributing to forest related
decision-making for two decades. This report:
provides a strategic analysis of forests and land-
scapes in the region to help policymakers and others
decide on the actions needed to realize a sustainable
future;
explores three scenarios – business-as-usual, aspira-
tional and disruptive – for the future of forests and
the forest sector in the region in 2030 and 2050; and
provides options for robust actions that various
stakeholders can take to address challenges in forest
and landscape management and attain an aspiration-
al future.
The report has three main parts: an overview of forests in
a larger landscape context to set the stage; an examina-
tion of the key drivers of change with impacts on forests
and forestry; and an exploration of scenarios for 2030 and
2050.
