Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (September 5 1888- 17 April 1985), we all has heard this name in school, especially on a specific day, which is on teachersday blog. He was a great Indian philosopher and educationist of the 20th century. Later, he became the first vice president and then the second president of the independent India.
He was born in the town of Tirutani, in a middle class family. His father’s name was Sarvepalli Veeraswami, and mother’s name was Sitamma. It is said that, his father did not want him to study English language, rather wanted him to become a priest. But he joined the school and his early education held in the primary board high school of Tirutani. Later, he was sent to the Hermansburg Evangelical Lutheral Mission School in Tirupati for higher studies.
He jumped into post at myteachersday blog accidently, when his cousin handed over his philosophy books to him. He read them and went deeper into the philosophy. His first book ‘the ethics if Vedanta and its material presupposition’, published in 1903, was his thesis for the M.A. degree examination of Madras university.
Philosophy was his favorite topic to ponder over. To him, philosophy is the study of life and the facts of life. His studies and analysis about Indian philosophy are great records in the history of India and has served the Indian culture.
His contributions are unforgettable, whether be as a philosopher or a socialist.
He has served as the professor in the university of Madras and Calcutta. From the very beginning, he was popular among his students. He was an ideal for his students. Teaching was a thing that was so close to his heart. He even has his contribution in the political fields, but although being at any stage of his life, he was always a teacher by heart.
Being an educationist, he has a tremendous contribution in the history of education in India. When he became the second President of India in the year of 1962, some of his students came to him and wanted to celebrate his birthday, but, he insisted that rather celebrate the day in the honor if all the teachers of the nation as the teachers’ day. Since then, his birthday that is September 5 is observed as the teachers’ day in India.
