2007-2008 SEASON OUTLOOK

THE WILDCATS CLOSED OUT the season with a 56-44 loss to Coppin State in thefirst round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament at the RBC Center

in Raleigh, North Carolina.

B-CU lost six players off of that squad, but replaced them with, arguably, Reed’s bestrecruiting class – which includes three junior college standouts and three prep stars.

Those six newcomers and the six returnees will be tested early as the pre-MEACschedule during the months of November and December include Big 10 power Purdue,a pair of dates with local rival Stetson and a meeting in Las Vegas at the FindlayToyota Las Vegas Classic against Iowa State.

“It’s a good schedule and it gives us an opportunity to travel and play a very high-level competition and gets us prepared for theMEAC schedule,” said Reed. “The biggest thing is just to keep them focused because we have three freshmen along with threenewcomers.”

B-CU hosts MEAC foe Florida A&M on December 1, but the meat of the conference schedule won’t be an easy one as theWildcats open with a January run that includes consecutive visits to Hampton, Howard, Coppin State and Morgan State.

The Wildcats return three starters in John Anderson, Jimmy Hudson and Dewayne Pettus and have three letterwinners back inJordan Carrier, Kevan Creppy and Josh Cummings.

Hudson, a 6-4, senior guard-forward from Eustis, Florida, led the Wildcats in scoring last season, averaging 11.4 points per clip and also averaged three rebounds and nearly two assists a game.

Pettus, a 6-2 senior guard from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will join Hudson in the backcourt andwas B-CU’s second-leading scorer last season averaging 8.1 points and three rebounds an outing.

Anderson, a 6-6 senior from Norway, South Carolina, and his 245-pound frame will be leaned onheavily in the frontcourt as he is the only Wildcat with significant experience in the paint. Hestarted 26 of 30 games last season averaging nearly six points and 5.8 rebounds an outing.

A pair of junior college transfers, John Holmes and Dominique Whatley, will be asked to start andcontribute in the paint and on the wings right away.

Holmes comes to B-CU via Des Moines (Iowa) Area Community College, where he averaged 14points and 6.9 rebounds per contest for the eighth-ranked Bears, helping them to the National DIIJunior College Tournament. He was a First Team All-Conference performer and rated as one of thebest forwards by JuCo Junction.

Much will be asked of Whatley as well, who made his way to Daytona Beach via Panola (Texas) JuniorCollege. The 6-foot-5, guard averaged 10 points per game and shot an average of 42-percent from thefield last season for the Ponies. Whatley also shot a respectable 32-percent from three-point territorywhile being named as an Honorable Mention player for the All-Region (XIV) Team.

Joey Woods, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound freshman guard from Bonita Springs, Florida, was named Naples DailyNews Basketball Player of the Year, as well as being picked by several publications as the best basketballplayer in the area. He was an All-State (Third Team) selection after eclipsing 1,000 points and in his final prep season heaveraged 15.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

Kyle Cook, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound power forward from Brooklyn, New York, was ranked No. 44 by Ron Naclerio in New York City, and should contribute immediately.

Cook helped Lincoln High School to the 2007 New York City & State Championship and Tobias Mahone will be in the hunt forplaying time at the guard position.

Mahone, a 6-3 junior out of Fort Myers, played junior college in New York and will provide much-needed depth.

Other players who will give the Wildcats much-needed depth off the bench are returnees Jordan Carrier, Kevan Creppy and JoshCummings.

Creppy, a 6-4 junior from Silver Spring, Maryland, played in 21 games last season where he averaged 4.1 points and 3.7rebounds a game while Carrier (6-0, Sr., G) started 13 of 30 games, averaging 3.5 points and 2.0 assists an outing.

Cummings, a 6-2 guard from Chicago, started eight of 30 games and averaged 7.2 points an outing.

THE CLIFFORD REED, JR. FILE

CLIFFORD REED, JR., a coach with over 16 years of experience on both the highschool and collegiate levels, enters into his sixth full season as the head coach of the

Bethune-Cookman University men’s basketball program. Reed has spent nine years overallwith the B-CU program, four of which were as an assistant coach under former Bethune-Cookman head coach Horace Broadnax. Last season, he guided the Wildcats to their bestseason in school history on the Division I level with a 15-15 overall mark … the first non-losing season overall for the Wildcats since the 1975-76 campaign (Division II).

Reed began his rising landmark career back in 1992 as the Boy’s Junior Varsity basketballhead coach at Mainland Senior High School in Daytona Beach. In 1994, he guided theBuccaneers to a 19-7 record and the Junior Varsity Championship. After serving for twoyears in that position, he became the first head Boy’s Varsity coach at Atlantic HighSchool ... just minutes from his home in Daytona Beach. During his tenure at AtlanticHigh School, Reed led the Sharks to back-to-back District 8 titles on the Class 4-A level. He finished with an overall record of 40-48. He spent three years with the Sharks programfrom 1995-98.

Reed’s calling was to one day coach on the collegiate level, and he was given the chancewhile serving as an assistant coach under legendary football and basketball head coach, and current Associate Director of Athletics, Jack “Cy” McClairen for one season during the1991-92 campaign. Ironically, this one year eventually led to Reed’s position to the staff asan assistant coach.

Reed, a graduate of Bethune-Cookman, played two years for the Wildcats aftertransferring from John’s River Community College where he averaged 18 points per gamefrom 1983-85. While at St. John’s River Community College, Reed was also named to the1984-85 Mid-Florida All-Conference Team.

After arriving at Bethune-Cookman, Moore Gymnasium became a staple for this “CageCat” as he set a then single-game school record for three-point field goals made (7), andscored over 1,200 points in just two seasons with the `Cats. In his two years with the`Cats, Reed also scored an average of 21 points per game. After stepping in as an interimhead coach, Reed went on to collect eight wins (five in the MEAC), and saw his `Catspost the first 100-point scoring output since the 2000 season.

Reed graduated from B-CU with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and receivedan associate degree from Daytona Beach Community College. He is a native of OrmondBeach, Florida, and currently lives in Daytona Beach. He is married to Vera Reed, andthey have one son, Clifford Jervon (CJ) Reed–a standout guard in his senior seasonplaying basketball at Atlantic High School in nearby Port Orange.

COPPIN STATE

2007-2008 SEASON OUTLOOK

COPPIN STATE returns a deep and experienced team for the 2007-08 season as it

looks to improve upon an eighth-place finish from a year ago.

The Eagles return three starters and eight letterwinners from a team that compiled a

12-20 overall record and a 9-9 record in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. CSU

returns 81-percent of its offense from last year and seven players who started at least

one game during the 2006-07 season.

Heading the list of returnees is senior guard Tywain McKee. McKee earned First Team

All-MEAC honors last year after being named the conference Rookie of the Year in

2005-06.

McKee finished second in the MEAC in scoring averaging 17.4 points per game and he also was second

in the conference in steals per game averaging 2.0 per contest. All told, the Philadelphia native

finished the season ranked among the conference leaders in seven different categories.

Seniors Antwan Harrison and Robert Pressey return after solid junior seasons. Harrison was

second on the team averaging 9.2 points per game and had 14 double figure scoring games

including a career-high 19 points versus Morgan State. Pressey finished fourth in the MEAC in

blocked shots per game averaging 1.13 per outing and he added 6.7 points and 4.8 rebounds

per contest.

Junior Brian Chesnut started 23 games last season and averaged 3.8 points and 3.3 rebounds

per game, while also shooting 49.5-percent from the floor. Seniors Mike Miller and Julian

Conyers and sophomores Ruben Britt and Ethan Kennedy also return for the Eagles proving

depth to a strong nucleus.

Coppin State welcomes a class of six newcomers to the 2007-08 team. Junior college transfers

A’Daeron Duncan and Chuka Iloegbu and freshmen Vince Goldsberry, Ernest Hargett, Eddie Hayden

and Ceslovas Kucinskas will all attempt to make their mark on the Eagles program.

As is the custom, Coppin State will face plenty of challenges during the 2007-08 season as the

Eagles will open the season with 16 of their first 17 games on the road. In addition to its 16-game

MEAC slate, the schedule features six schools that reached postseason play a year ago, five of which

appeared in the NCAA tournament, including MEAC champion Florida A&M. The Eagles open MEAC play in the Coppin Center

against rival Morgan State on December 1.

RON “FANG” MITCHELL, enters his 22nd season at Coppin State. Under his guidancethe program really took off in 1989-90, Coppin State’s first squad comprised entirely of

Mitchell recruits. The Eagles finished 26-7 to register their best mark since moving to DivisionI and claimed their first-ever MEAC championship.

In 1990-91, for the second straight time, Mitchell was named MEAC Coach of the Year afterguiding the Eagles to a first-place conference regular-season finish (14-2 record). Despite adisappointing loss to eventual champion Florida A&M in the MEAC tournament, the Eaglesreceived a bid to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT).

In 1993, Mitchell surprised MEAC followers by directing Coppin State to its second leaguetournament title in four years after being picked seventh in a preseason poll by conferencecoaches and sports information directors. The feat earned Coppin State its second trip to theNCAA Tournament, as Mitchell earned MEAC Coach of the Year honors.

With no seniors and only four juniors, the Eagles finished with a 16-0 MEAC slate, markingone of just three undefeated conference seasons in league history. Coppin State repeated thedeed in 1993-94.

Thirteen years ago he guided the Eagles to their third straight 20-win season and a berth inthe NIT. Coppin State posted the school’s first-ever postseason tournament victory sincemoving to NCAA Division I with a 75-68 overtime win over host St. Joseph’s in the firstround.

In 1995-96, Mitchell, despite losing all five starters and returning only two players, steered histeam to a league-record fourth straight MEAC regular-season crown, tying South CarolinaState for the honor. And in 1997, Mitchell’s Eagles shocked the nation and ruined numerousoffice pools with their 78-65 victory over South Carolina in the first round of the NCAAtournament.

The following year it was more of the same for the Eagles as they tied for the regular-seasontitle with a 14-4 record. CSU won 14 straight games before suffering a disappointing loss toSouth Carolina State in the MEAC Tournament championship game.

Mitchell led the Eagles to a share of the conference title in 2003-04 and another berth in thetournament title game. It marked the 10th regular-season title under his guidance and theeighth championship game appearance.

In addition to his own personal success, Eagle athletes have been named MEAC Player of theYear six times under his watch, and 40 times his players have earned all-conference honors.Mitchell’s unorthodox path to a basketball coaching career began at Woodrow Wilson HighSchool in Camden, N.J., where he was a three-sport standout.

Mitchell earned his bachelor’s in business administration from Edison State College in 1984.He has since completed his master’s degree in adult and continuing education from CoppinState (’94).

DELAWARE STATE

2007-2008 SEASON OUTLOOK

COACH GREG JACKSON HAS GUIDED the Hornets to three straight MEACregular season titles, turning the basketball excitement on campus into a “we

expect to win” expectation. That has been the norm as the Hornets have beenimpressive at home with a 27-3 record on their home floor in Memorial Hall.

This is a new season and this team will have many new faces as graduation has takena toll as the team lost four starters including the 2007 MEAC Player of the YearJahsha Bluntt. The bright spot for the Hornets this season is the only returningstarter senior guard/forward Roy Bright who was selected MEAC Pre-Season Playerof the Year. According to Jackson, the team will rely on his leadership and talent tohelp. Of all returnees, he is first in scoring with 512 points last year. He was second in rebounds with 161 and second in assistswith 156. He averaged 15.5 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per game.

Another key returnee is senior Joe Dickens who gained back his last year of eligibility after missing almost all of last season withan ankle injury. It will be important for the team for Dickens to come back completely healthy as he was one of the leadingscorers upon getting hurt. A healthy Dickens could significantly help the team as he was the second leading scorer in his firstyear with the Hornets in 2005-2006. He appeared in all games that season, starting 31 of the games. He contributed 302 pointsand was second on the team in rebounds per game with 3.4.

Although the rest of the team is fairly young with little experience, they have the taste of what it is like to play in achampionship game and it has only left them hungry for more. Sophomore Kyle White is coming into his second year and willcompete for a starting position. White contributed a lot last year which allowed him to gain valuable experience on the court. He played in 22 games for the Hornets, averaging 2.3 points per game. While in high school, White helped lead CapeHenlopen’s Boy’s Basketball team to back-to-back conference titles, giving him valuable experience in high intensity games.

Marcus Neal is another important returner for the team. He was used in 28 games for the Hornets last year, averaging 1.6points.

Tremaine Johnson needs to have a big year for the Hornets to be successful. The junioris coming into his second year of play on the team, and he played in 24 games last yearaveraging 2.0 points.

Second year player Mark D’Agostino could have a good year. He participated in 19games last year contributing 0.9 points per game.

Darrell Mosley is also in his second year of play and hopes for more playing time. Heplayed in 18 games last year, contributing 0.4 points per game and 0.3 rebounds pergame.

Frisco Sandidge played in 14 games in his second year with the Hornets. He averaged0.4 points and 0.4 rebounds last season.

Recruiting Coordinator Keith Walker expects transfer Kris Douse and freshmen TerrenceParkes, Matt Washington, André Topic and Trevor Welcher to have a big year.

Douse is a transfer out of the University of Nebraska. However, before college he playedfor the Laurinburg Institute where he was ranked 35th among fifth year players.

HAMPTON

2007-2008 SEASON OUTLOOK

OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS Coach Kevin Nickelberry has done an amazing jobrecruiting stellar talent into the Hampton men’s basketball program.

Last season was supposed to be a major transition year with the new coach and theloss of four key players, but the Pirates still managed a solid season. Hampton startedfour freshmen for most of the year. Standouts like Mike Freeman and Matt Pilgrimproved to be as good as advertised and they will continue to make a great impact onthis year’s team.

However, senior Rashad West is what makes the team tick. The 6-1 point guard ledthe team with 17.8 points, 2.6 assists per game and will have to once again be thesteadying force for a young team.

“Rashad is a stellar athlete who has a lot of talent and he is someone that we know will produce big things during this upcoming season,” said Coach Nickelberry. “With key players like Matt Pilgrim and Mike Freeman even more experienced than lastyear, they will be great players to watch play every night.”

The depth in the backcourt has taken a hit with the transfer of Demario Mattox and the graduation of Junior Pehoua. Mattoxaveraged 6.0 points and Pehoua added 3.9 per contest. The depth chart for the guards will be full of new players, but they aretalented enough to be quality reserves. Forward Kevin Clark, who averaged 2.6 points and 2.1 rebounds and earned seven starts,is also not returning to the program.

Hampton fans hope this recruiting class can perform as well as last year’s team. The backcourt is where help is neededimmediately and guards Jordan Brooks and Brandon Tunnell will answer the call. The duo will likely spend the season beinggroomed to take over the starting point guard duties for 2007-2008.

Milade Lola-Charles and redshirt freshman Oluwaseyi Oseni have the size, at 6-11 and 6-10, respectively, to develop into adominating duo up front, but it is 6-9 junior college transfer Donte Harrison who will make animpact on the Hampton frontline right away. Harrison averaged 11.6 points and 11.3 reboundsat Sullivan County Community College in New York. He is a good defender and his longarms will be an asset in the shot blocking department.

The development of Vincent Simpson, Theo Smalling, Pilgrim and Freeman will be thekey to the campaign. The foursome did a great job during their freshmen campaign, butthey need to continue to improve if Hampton wants to reach the post season play.

Simpson has to become a more consistent shooter at the shooting guard position andSmalling could develop a better game on the offensive end, even though he will bepushed for minutes, with the addition of size. Pilgrim and Freeman are harder to findfaults with as long as they continue to develop. Both combined for 25.2 points and 11.8rebounds per game last year.

With West leading the show along with four returning sophomores, the Pirates will be a toughteam to beat. Adrian Woodard will provide some experienced depth that will help the team stayfresh down the stretch. Considering the last two recruiting classes have been among the best inthe MEAC, the future for the Pirates is even brighter than the present.

THE KEVIN NICKELBERRY FILE

COACH KEVIN NICKELBERRY is in his second season at the helm of the HamptonUniversity men’s basketball program. In his first year at helm, he posted records of

15-16 overall and 10-8 in conference play as the Pirates finished the regular season inthird place in the MEAC. Coach Nickelberry brings with him a proven track record thatincludes post-season appearances in each of his last three stops as an assistant.

The 42-year old Maryland native came to Hampton after working on Oliver Purnell’sbasketball staff at Clemson University for three years. In his first year as Clemson’srecruiting coordinator, Coach Nickelberry helped Clemson recruit an impressive top 25class. Nickelberry’s immediate impact at Clemson was not surprising, given that he waswidely regarded as one of the top assistant coaches in the country. At his previous stop,he helped UNC-Charlotte achieve consecutive top 20 recruiting classes in both 2002 and2003.

Basketball Times, The Hoop Scoop and Rivalshoops.com ranked Nickelberry as one of thetop 20 assistant coaches in the country. “Kevin Nickelberry quietly has built himself intoone of college basketball’s premier recruiters,” said Mike DeCourcy, college basketballwriter for the Sporting News. “Perhaps he’s been too quiet. His accomplishments inhelping to identify and attract promising players haven’t gotten nearly the attentionmerited. Anyone who knows the game knows talent is the primary ingredient in buildinga winning program. Locating players who fit in a given program is not as easy as Kevinmakes it look.”

Prior to joining Clemson, Nickelberry served two seasons as the top assistant at UNC-Charlotte in Conference USA. While at Charlotte, he helped to recruit and sign fourimpact players who have had outstanding college careers.

Nickelberry served two seasons at the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he was the associate head coach. While at Holy Cross, he helped guide theCrusaders to a remarkable season, which included the best turnaround in school history,a NCAA tournament appearance and the Patriot League regular season and tournamentchampionships. Nickelberry also helped recruit and develop two conference Rookie of theYear players, two conference Player of the Year awardees, three All-Rookie Teamperformers, four first team all-conference recipients and two second team all-conferenceplayers while there.

Nickelberry began his coaching career at NAIA Columbia Union College in Maryland, where he served as both assistant men’s basketball coach and head women’s basketballcoach. In his only season with the men’s program, Columbia Union made its first everappearance in the NAIA tournament.

Nickelberry and his wife Mamie reside in Hampton with their sons, Kyan and Kelby.

HOWARD

2007-2008 SEASON OUTLOOK

THE 2007-08 BASKETBALL SEASON promises to be one filled with excitementand measured expectations for the Howard University men’s basketball team. The

Bison coaching staff has assembled a group of young returning “veterans” to go alongwith some fine recruits and a key transfer in hopes that it will all come together asthe season progresses and provide the foundation for a strong program in futureyears.

Much of the season’s success in the early season will depend on the play of JeronSmith, Eugene Myatt and Randy Hampton. Smith, a 6-5 senior guard from Chino,Calif., is the team’s only senior. He played both guard positions, starting 13 games andaveraging a little over three points per game while ranking third in steals. An outstanding student, Smith will be expected toprovide leadership to the team.

Myatt, a 6-6 junior wing player from Philadelphia, PA, was off to an all-conference start, averaging 15 points and 3.5 reboundsbefore succumbing to an ankle fracture in the 12th game of the season. He is one of the top scorers in the conference and if heis fully recovered, gives the Bison a consistent scoring threat.

Hampton is a 6-5 junior forward transfer from Drexel University. A former standout at Dunbar High School in Washington, DC,Hampton gives Howard a strong rebounder and a scorer around the basket. He brings much-needed intensity to the youngsquad.

The Bison also welcome the return of Curtis White, a 6-4 sophomore sharpshooter from Indianapolis, IN, who was an earlycandidate for the all-rookie team before he too, suffered a fractured ankle that ended his season after only 10 games. He wasaveraging over 5.0 points per game as a reserve and was shooting 64-percent from the floor. If healthy, he gives the Bison bothan accomplished three-point threat as well as one of the most cerebral players on the team.

Julius Hearn showed flashes of making the transition from shooting guard to point guard during the season. The 6-0, 180-poundsophomore from Chicago, IL started 15 games and averaged four points per game. He led the team in assists with 72. He shouldbe much improved with the season’s experience under his belt and primed to handle the pressure of the position.

Dominique Davis also showed marked improvement and displayed flashes late in the season. The 5-11, 177-pound junior guardfrom Washington, DC started two games and averaged a little under three points per game while learning to play the position. A very strong defensive player, Davis will split time with Hearn. The Bison are really excited about the talent of Kyle Riley, a 6-3freshman from Indianapolis, Ind., who is a fine shooter and an outstanding all-around player. Riley has the potential to be one ofthe top freshmen in the conference and he will be relied upon heavily to contribute early.

Kandi Mukole is a 6-8, 215-pound sophomore from Atlanta, Ga., who started nine games and averagedalmost 5.0 points per game while leading the team in blocks with 21. He has tremendous upside andhis talent and versatility on both the wing and around the basket will be key.

After a slow start, the light bulb finally went off late in the season for Paul Kirkpatrick. The 6-9,220-pound sophomore from Randallstown, Md., emerged as one of the top young post players inthe MEAC after starting 20 games. The sky is the limit for the young post player who did startplaying the sport until his junior year in high school.

The coaching staff is also excited about the potential of Adam Walker and Anthony Thomas andwhat they bring to the frontcourt. Walker is a 6-8, 190-pound freshman from New York. He isvery active and very agile and will bring energy and athleticism to the frontcourt.

Thomas is a 6-6, 205-pound freshman from Glen Burnie, Md., who brings a physical presence tothe frontcourt with his ability to bang and be physical on the boards and around the basket.Torrance Timothy is a 6-5, 185-pound freshman who could contribute as the season progresses whileNate Cooper, a 6-8, 220-pound sophomore from Camden, N.J., will be looking to improve and providedepth and size to the frontcourt.
