In partnership with our volunteers, our impact is manyfold greater. Dr. Tate completed his residency in pediatrics, fellowship in clinical ethics and MA in bioethics at the University of Washington, and a fellowship in palliative care at Duke University. Since joining the OHSU faculty in September 2018, he has published five manuscripts and presented at one international and two national meetings. With funding from an endowment established by donors in memory of Miles J. Edwards, we are very pleased to welcome Dr. Tate on July 1, 2019 as the Centers new Director of Professionalism and Comfort Care. Dr. Ron Naito Establishes a Directorship in Serious Illness Education The Center for Ethics in Health Care is deeply honored to announce the establishment of the Ronald W. Naito Directorship in Serious Illness Education with a $1-million gift from the Ronald W. Naito, MD Foundation to launch the endowment fund. It is Dr. Naito's hope that his lead gift will inspire others to contribute an additional $1.5 million to raise the Serious Illness Endowment Fund to the level of an endowed chair. Dr. Katie Stowers will serve as the inaugural Ronald W. Naito Director in Serious Illness Education. The Kinsman Foundation Supports Statewide Conferences With generous support from The Kinsman Foundation , the Center recently hosted the annual statewide Kinsman Bioethics Conference in Eugene. A highlight for the Oregon bioethics community, this conference draws healthcare professionals from across the state to gather, collaborate and share innovative practices. This year, under the leadership of Lynn A. Jansen, PhD, RN, Madeline Brill Nelson Chair of Ethics Education, the Center partnered with PeaceHealth Eugene and the University of Oregon to build the conference theme, Raising Voices: The Ethics of Dialogue and Communication in Health Care.Conference breakout sessions focused on the challenges experienced by marginalized populations in healthcare. In addition to the annual Kinsman Bioethics Conference, the Center is partnering with communities throughout the state, finding new ways to empower regional leaders to improve support for honoring patientswishes as they near the end of their lives. Save the Date: Celebrate the Center for Ethics 30th Anniversary The 2019 Center for Ethics Annual Community luncheon will be held on September 16, 2019 from 11:30 AM to 1 PM at the Multnomah Athletic Club.
