� Started as a Leprosy sufferers’ squatter “Camp”

� Near Ankaful Leprosarium – in 1950’s

� Funding obtained for proper housing

� British National Lotteries Charity Board (1998)

� ‘Friends of Ahotokurom’ -- UK based charity

� Renamed to “Enyinndakurom”

� Meaning “a place beyond our dreams”

� Now: ~190 residents in 80 houses with a

community-centre, shops and paved roads

6. The villagers were always willing and happy to

receive ‘free-gifts’ (cash)

7. But, they actually needed significant non-financial

help – things that they couldn't buy with money

8. They needed sustainable solutions to their core

problems – decision-making, strategic-planning,

leadership, job-seeking, career-advice, etc.

9. This is in keeping with Amartya Sen’s assertion that

“poverty must be seen as the deprivation of basic

capabilities rather than merely a lowness of

incomes…”
