� Started as a Leprosy sufferers’ squatter “Camp”

� Near Ankaful Leprosarium – in 1950’s

� Funding obtained for proper housing

� British National Lotteries Charity Board (1998)

� ‘Friends of Ahotokurom’ -- UK based charity

� Renamed to “Enyinndakurom”

� Meaning “a place beyond our dreams”

� Now: ~190 residents in 80 houses with a

community-centre, shops and paved roads

� 60 years as a diverse multi-cultural community

� The profile of the village has changed a lot

� Many of the original ‘squatters’ (leprosy-

survivors) have died, or are old and infirm

� Serious concerns – for the long term future

� Need to move beyond ‘acquired dependency’

� Need to plan for a sustainable future

Enyinndakurom (Table 1)

� Identified during a Strategic Planning exercise

with the PPRC, in Ahotokurom, Aug-2013

� Part of an on-going development project

� Part-funded by Misean-Cara

� Decided to ‘investigate’ these issues with a

view to mitigating them – where possible

3 Lack of a functioning leadership structure in the village

1. The residents have a (self acknowledged)

reputation for being ‘quarrelsome’

2. Wanted to help them solve some of their main

issues, but not get caught in the crossfire

3. Took a data-driven, problem-focused approach

– using the DMAICR framework (Six-Sigma)

4. The main tools used are outlined in Table 3

and the main activities completed in Table 4

1. Modern Management Methods can be usedsuccessfully to help very poor and under-developedcommunities

2. How you approach the situation and apply thesemethods is the key to success

3. Positive engagement & trust from the mainstakeholders is essential

4. A top-down (quick-fix / cash-rich) solution-ledapproach is unlikely to be successful – it may makethinks worse

5. A patient, collaborative, bottom-up, problem-focusedapproach is much more likely to succeed

6. The villagers were always willing and happy to

receive ‘free-gifts’ (cash)

7. But, they actually needed significant non-financial

help – things that they couldn't buy with money

8. They needed sustainable solutions to their core

problems – decision-making, strategic-planning,

leadership, job-seeking, career-advice, etc.

9. This is in keeping with Amartya Sen’s assertion that

“poverty must be seen as the deprivation of basic

capabilities rather than merely a lowness of

incomes…”
