National Scholars Association of Malawi (NaSAM) |Draft - 2012/2013 Strategic Plan 2
1.0. Introduction
The National Scholars Association of Malawi (NaSAM) is an association of all tertiary education
students in Malawi. NaSAM aims at standing for the voice of students in Malawi, studying both
in public and private institutions; fighting for their rights and welfare. The association also aims
at charging students, as an integral part of the society, to making a contribution to the
development of Malawi through positive student activism and taking part in development
programs, in such way also changing the face of the students’ movement.
In order to achieve this, the NaSAM executive has lined up a number of campaigns, initiatives
and programs for the year 2012/2013. The Executive shall work together in close contact with
the other arms of the organization: the NaSAM Congress, the Secretariat, the Board of Trustees
and the Board of Advisors in order to achieve the goals set up for the year.
2.0. Goals for the year
Register student unions of all colleges in Malawi as members of NaSAM
Register all students’ organizations and societies in Colleges as associate members of
NaSAM
Win popularity and trust of all stakeholders in tertiary education: students,
College/University Staff, NGO’s, CSO’s, Faith-based institutions, the Government,
Private Institutions, donors and the Malawian peoples.
Gain marked presence throughout Africa (or at least Southern Africa) and other parts of
the world as an object of pride for the Malawian Nation and an example of creativity and
positive action for the world to see.
Create a database of information of and about all tertiary education institutions in
Malawi: the students unions therein, student’s organizations and societies; problems
facing students and make known such information through as many channels as possible.
Create platforms, systems and structures to unite all students without considering which
institutions they come from, organizing them to furthering the aims of the student
movement.

3.0. Strategies to furthering the goals
The NaSAM executive shall therefore use the following strategies to further the goals as
presented above:
Visit all colleges in Malawi; in such visit
o Arranging meetings with students unions and college Principals to introduce
NaSAM
o Collecting through questionnaire information important in the furthering of the
goals of the student movement.
o Meeting with leaders of all student organizations and societies at the campus
introducing to them NaSAM Initiatives and calling on them to be associate
members of the Student Movement.
Using the media to condemn such practices that infringe on the rights of students and
those that deteriorate their welfare and arranging meetings with stakeholders involved in
such activities for negotiations.
Using websites, social networks, publications, conferences and other media to collect and
transmit student concerns, suggestions to solve those concerns and programs being
conducted by NaSAM to solve those concerns.
Creating social networks that will bring all students under one virtual roof.
Organize all students to do large scale works of charity and voluntarism across the
country and internationally.
Play an advisory role to students’ unions, student organizations and societies and special
placed students e.g. freshmen, Final years and female students through contact,
conferences, workshops and publications.
Visit and host (or invite) national students’ unions of countries in Southern Africa and
beyond to share knowledge and showcase creativity of the Malawian Students
Movement.

Website and in other NaSAM publications. The directorate shall also organize

responsible directorate. Directors and deputy Directors shall as much as possible split
responsibilities in the event of simultaneous activities under the same directorate.
7.0. PUBLICITY AND COORDINATION STRATEGY
Given the vast distances between colleges in the four regions of Malawi, getting all colleges to
know what is going around in NaSAM so that they take an active role would be a huge challenge
but not an impossible one. NaSAM shall as much as possible use technological ways of
communicating and coordinating information. NaSAM shall use strategies such as
Communicating through websites, social networks, e-mails, phone calls and SMS.
Contacts e.g. student leaders, members of special committees and associate organizations
and societies shall have the obligation to post such communication on their campus
notice boards on NaSAM finance which shall be reimbursed later. Where possible, NaSAM shall use the services of the audio and print media to
communicate information to students.
Travel shall be used only in extreme conditions.
8.0. FINAL WORDS

strong will and ambition by all stakeholders in the nation: tertiary education students, all organs
in NaSAM, Non-governmental Organizations, international organizations, embassies,
college/university administrators, companies, business people, the government, as well as all the
peoples of Malawi. Hence, the NaSAM executive calls on all these entities to hold hands for a
better student movement, better standards of tertiary education and development for the
Malawian Nation.
