VI . CONCLUSION

I . In t roduct ion

The new genera t ion today has been a l ready exposed to

the d i f fe ren t k inds and genres o f mus ic . F rom t ime to t ime

mus ic has been improved and made more en te r ta in ing than

be fo re . Th is has evo lved f rom the na t i ve t ype o f mus ic to the

modern k ind o f mus ic in wh ich mos t o f the teenagers a t p resen t

seem to l i ke and ido l i ze . Mos t o f the mus ic today i s a l ready

mixed up . Some mus ic i s f rom o ther coun t r ies tha t became

popu la r and known to o ther ne ighbor ing coun t r ies and i s s t i l l

ge t t ing more popu la r wor ldw ide . (V i l l ano)

A g rea t example o f th i s sa id phenomenon i s ca l led Ha l l yu

o r in layman ’s te rm is K-Pop fever . Bu t f i r s t wha t i s K -pop?

Accord ing to Wik iped ia K-Pop i s a mus ica l genre cons is t ing o f

pop , bubb legum pop , dance , e lec t ro pop , h ip hop , rock , and

R&B mus ic o r ig ina ted in Sou th Korea . In add i t ion to mus ic , K -

Pop has g rown in to a popu la r subcu l tu re among teenagers and

young adu l t s a round the wor ld .

Bu t how does K-pop a f fec t our coun t ry ’s mus ic indus t ry

and the mora l i t y va lues o f the F i l i p ino you th? The Koreans

have landed on our shores , shar ing our cu l tu re and invad ing

our med ia . We ’ re no t jus t see ing them anywhere , we ’ re hear ing

them a t fu l l b las t as we l l . There ’s jus t someth ing te r r ib l y ca tchy

in these K-Pop tuners tha t has th rown a bunch o f P inoy ’s in a

t i zzy over the i r l anguage in a b id to memor ize the fo re ign l y r i cs

and be ab le toss ing a long w i th i t (wh i le unders tand ing the

l y r i cs i s secondary ) . K -Pop has become a phenomenon here

loca l l y tha t many have been insp i red by h igh ly energe t i c and

s ty l i sh looks o f Korean pop s ta rs . They ’ve de f in i te l y taken the

loca l fash ion scene by s to rm, w i th man o f Man i la ’s t rend

se t te rs tak ing the i r cue f rom these As ian- insp i red s ty les such

as Japanese and now Korean . K-Pop has become phenomenon

here loca l l y tha t many have been insp i red by h igh ly energe t i c

and s ty l i sh looks o f Korean pop s ta rs . They ’ve de f in i te l y taken

the loca l fash ion scene by s to rm, w i th many o f Man i la t rend

se t te rs tak ing the i r cue f rom these As ian- insp i red s ty les such

as Japanese and now Korean . K-Pop has a b ig e f fec t in our

mus ic indus t ry because numerous number o f F i l i p ino teenagers

has been a b ig fan o f i t t ha t they a re no t on ly s ing ing the song

bu t they a re a lso s tudy ing the Korean language ( to be t te r

unders tand what they a re s ing ing) and they a re a lso im i ta t ing

the fash ion looks o f the Korean Pop s ta rs .

I I . H is tory o f K-Pop

The h is to ry o f Korean popu la r mus ic can be t raced back

to 1885 when an Amer ican miss ionary , Henry Appenze l le r

s ta r ted teach ing Amer ican and Br i t i sh fo lk songs a t a schoo l .

These songs were ca l led changga in Korean , and they

were usua l l y based on a popu la r Wes te rn me lody sung w i th

Korean l y r i cs . The we l l - known song "Oh My Dar l ing ,

C lement ine" was fo r example known as "S imcheongga" . Dur ing

the Japanese ru le (1910–1945) popu la r i t y o f changga songs

rose as Koreans t r ied to express the i r fee l ings aga ins t

Japanese domina t ion th rough mus ic . One o f the mos t popu la r

songs was "Hu imangga" (The Song o f Hope) . The Japanese

con f i sca ted the ex is t ing changga co l lec t ions and pub l i shed

l y r i cs books o f the i r own.

A. Beginning of the K Pop Industry

The roo ts o f wha t can ob jec t i ve ly be cons idered ido l

g roups , a g roup tha t spec ia l i zes in s ing ing , danc ing , and

en te r ta in ing pu t on by a la rge en te r ta inment company

th rough a p rocess o f aud i t ion da te back to 1996 and the

f i r s t appearance o f Young Turks C lub and H.O.T . The two

were jo ined by a 3 -member g roup ca l led UP. In te res t ing ly ,

o f the th ree g roups tha t debu ted in 1996 , two were mixed

gender , and g iven tha t H .O.T . se t the p recedent fo r

beas t l y boy g roups , i t fo l lows tha t none were fema le .

1997 saw the s low deve lopment o f the indus t ry ; f i ve

g roups debu ted tha t year , and th ree (Baby V .O.X . , SES,

and D iva) were cons is t o f on ly g i r l s . Un l i ke 1996 , no

mixed g roups debu ted in 1997 . Two more mixed g roups

d id come ou t in 1998 (S#arp and Koyo te ) , bu t they were

dwar fed by the inc reas ing number o f ma le and fema le

g roups tha t kep t h i t t i ng the scene . YG Ente r ta inment

in t roduced i t s f i r s t boy g roup 1TYM wh i le Lee Hyor i ‘ s

d iscovery (she was spo t ted by an agency represen ta t i ve

wh i le tak ing s t i cker p ic tu res a t a ma l l w i th a f r iend)

p rov ided the face fo r the odd ly -named g i r l g roup F in .K .L .

However , K -pop d idn ’ t exac t l y h i t the g round

runn ing ; though a la rge and inc reas ing ly por t ion o f Sou th

Korea ’s mus ic marke t was occup ied by ido l g roups , K-

pop ’s c l imb was ac tua l l y p re t t y s low compara t i ve to how

the indus t ry i s unders tood and seen today . Cons ider th is :

be tween 1999 and 2005 , f i f t y new groups debu ted . Th is

may sound l i ke a lo t , bu t more than f i f t y new groups

debu ted in 2011 a lone . Th is was p receded by a boom in

2010 tha t saw the appearance o f more than th i r t y new

groups . When SNSD debuted in 2007 , they on ly had to

share rook ie s ta tus w i th twe lve o ther g roups ; converse ly ,

today ’s rook ies compete w i th dozens o f indus t ry hope fu ls ,

and i t i s ve ry d i f f i cu l t to ca rve ou t a pos i t ion fo r

themse lves amids t no t on ly a bunch o f newb ie ’s w i th

d reams, bu t a lso indus t ry sen io rs whose pos i t ions and

careers have a l ready been we l l - known.

B. Factors that In f luenced K Pop

Korea i s a sma l l coun t ry ( less than 50 mi l l i on

peop le ) . And ye t i t s te lev is ion d ramas, mus ic and mov ies

a re huge ly popu la r ac ross As ia , inc lud ing in Ch ina and

Japan , wh ich has the second- la rges t mus ic marke t a f te r

the Un i ted S ta tes .

So how d id th is t i ny coun t ry beg in c rea t ing cu l tu ra l

p roduc ts fo r 1 .2 b i l l i on As ians (and mak ing $2 b i l l i on a

year f rom i t ) Indus t r ia l i za t ion .

Jus t l i ke Motown d id , Korean pop (n icknamed K-pop)

has worked on packag ing up appea l ing pop fo r decades .

As Zoe Chace says on

NPR’s P lane t Money :

“ K o r e a e x p o r t s a l o t o f p r o d u c t s — c a r s , c o m p u t e r s ,

p h o n e s . Y o u u s e K o r e a n p r o d u c t s e v e r y d a y . A K o r e a n p o p

s o p h i s t i c a t e d p r o d u c t . ”

Korea has been per fec t ing these cu l tu ra l p roduc ts by

c rea t ing a huge fac to ry - l i ke sys tem fo r K-pop . A recen t

New Yorker a r t i c le on K-pop de ta i l s the reg imen o f a K-

pop t ra inee : lessons in s ing ing , danc ing , ac t ing and

Japanese , Ch inese and Eng l i sh , and med ia coach ing .

Tra inees may a lso be fo rced to fo l low s t r i c t cu r fews ,

d ie ts and da t ing ru les . The New Yorker says “Good looks

a re a K-pop a r t i s t ’ s s tock - in - t rade” and repor ts tha t one

agency “ fo rb ids i t s fema le t ra inees to have boy f r iends and

bars any food o r wa te r a f te r 7pm, accord ing to the S t ra i t s

T imes , S ingapore ’s Eng l i sh - language newspaper . ”

C. K-Pop in the In ternet Wor ld

YG Ente r ta inment i s a record labe l and ta len t agency

based in Seou l , Sou th Korea , spec ia l i z ing in R&B and h ip

hop mus ic . We represen t some o f the b igges t names in

Korean mus ic inc lud ing B IGBANG, 2NE1, Lee H i — and o f

course , rapper PSY, whose “Gangnam Sty le ” recen t l y

became the mos t popu la r YouTube v ideo o f a l l t ime .

Over the las t few years , we have been work ing hard

to b r ing the bes t o f K -Pop to the wor ld . In the las t two

weeks a lone , PSY has been busy tour ing the Un i ted

S ta tes , 2NE1 have been tour ing Sou th Eas t As ia , and B ig

Bang has been tour ing Japan .

Wi th a r t i s ts a l l over the wor ld and a th i rd o f our s ta f f

ou t o f the coun t ry a l l the t ime, we need a commun ica t ion

sys tem we can re ly on . P r io r to mov ing to Goog le Apps ,

our ema i l sys tem was run f rom a loca l Korean server . Th is

was f ine wh i le we were in Korea , bu t was unre l iab le when

work ing in te rna t iona l l y . When look ing fo r a l te rna t i ves , we

wanted mob i l i t y , speed and s tab i l i t y fo r teams and a r t i s ts

on the go . As a c rea t i ve bus iness us ing bo th Mac in tosh

and Windows, we a lso wanted someth ing wh ich wou ld be

compat ib le w i th bo th opera t ing sys tems.

Goog le Apps worked we l l w i th a l l these

requ i rements . S ince mak ing the sw i tch to G ma i l i n June

th is year we ’ve no t i ced a b ig inc rease in ema i l re l iab i l i t y .

We ’ve a lso found the mob i le exper ience i s much be t te r .

S ta f f use Smar tphone ’s and tab le ts to access G ma i l and

Ca lendar and f ind i t much more in tu i t i ve than our p rev ious

sys tem. We a lso l i ke tha t Goog le Apps i s p r i ced accord ing

to the number o f accoun ts , no t the amount o f s to rage tha t

you use , so we on ly pay fo r wha t we use .

As we con t inue to expand g loba l l y , nur tu r ing Korean

ta len t and b r ing s ta rs l i ke PSY on to the wor ld s tage , we ’ re

con f iden t knowing tha t Goog le Apps can sca le w i th us . (by

Je f f Son , S t ra tegy Manager , YG Ente r ta inment )
