Chipotle PartnershipA partnership was developed with Chipotle Mexican Grill to secure a donation of 500 burrito vouchers. These burrito vouchers were distributed to the first 500 students that cast their vote at the SG Computer Services lab, located in the Marshall Student Union. These vouchers were fully distributed in 6hrs 27m,

The event was promoted through a mass e-mail to the student body, as well as through word of mouth.

Below is the text of the original e-mail sent by Ms. Jasmine Fowlkes to Chipotle representatives regarding the run-off elections:

Hello Sydney,

Student Government is looking forward to working with Chipotle this upcoming week during the run-off elections on Tuesday, March 10th, and Wednesday, March 11th. It is our hope that students who vote in next week’s elections will receive a free burrito and/or a discount at the local Chipotle restaurant. Not only will this encourage students to vote for their future Student Body leaders, but it will also increase traffic for your Chipotle restaurant. Please get back to us as soon as possible with confirmation that we can go forward with this collaboration. The sooner we know, the sooner we can include your company name and logo on the remainder of our election promotions.

If you ever need to reach my supervisor for any reason, his contact information is the following:

Thank you so much for you and your supervisor’s willingness to work with us during the run-off elections. We truly appreciate you. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to hearing from you soon with confirmation of the ideas we discussed this evening.

Stampede the Polls Shirts Stampede the Polls Buttons

Flash Mob

In an effort to invest others in the promotion of the 2009 Student Body Elections, 1000 t-shirts were order from Image Depot. Each shirt was wrapped with both a flyer promoting the election and a note asking the student to be a part of the Stampede the Polls campaign by wearing the shirt as often as possible during the week of the elections.

These shirts were handed out at the Bull Markets on Wednesday, during the Flash Mob dance in the Marshall Center Atrium, at SG Night at Body Worlds, and throughout the university.

Over 300 buttons were created and distributed to Aramark employees, Student Government employees and students. Buttons were printed in H.Y.P.E., and were cut out by MPA and assemble with a button press.

The Flash Mob was implemented to promote the 2009 Student Body Election. We used this as viral marketing, in order to create a word of mouth among students. It was a dancing Flash Mob that was inspired from the “T-Mobile” flash mob commercial.

We advertised the event on LCD screens and the oracle as a coming event that no one would want to miss at 1pm at the MSC; and we even encouraged people to bring their camera. The goal being to surprise students and create interest and curiosity, we didn’t give any details. The d-day, we had hundreds of people in the Marshall Center expecting something to happen, and ready to video tape. The dance began with a break dancer, then swing dancers were added, then salsa dancers, then another group to dance on “thriller” and then another group to snap fingers and finally point at some banners encouraging people to vote. Thus it began with 1 person and dance by dance, we ended with a gathering of about 30 people.

Movie Theater Advertisements:

The fan page “USF Student Body Elections: Stampede the Polls” was created to help promote the election and provide critical information about the process. This page included a description of the positions, links to each of the candidates profiles, a comprehensive timeline of all events and activities (presidential debates, candidate meet-and-greets), and a sample ballot.

Student Government created a 15-second video advertisement that aired twice before every movie showing at the Muvico Starlight 20 in new Tampa between January 2, 2009 and March 13, 2009. The ad was created with different USF students that explained their reasons for voting in the 2009 Student Body Elections.

The script for this advertisement is listed below:I’m voting because......everyone needs to be involved....I can make a difference....$11 million is a lot of money....my voice matters!

Whatever your reason is: Stampede the Polls!

Press Releases

This semester, Student Government is working hard to ensure that the entire student body knows about the upcoming elections. As a part of the Student Government election campaign, students are encouraged to “stampede the polls” by voting via on-campus polling booths. Off-campus students are still able to vote online, between the hours of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The online voting will also be integrated into the Blackboard system.

Student Government’s Marketing Department has election advertisements in the Muvico Movie Theater in Tampa, in very prominent pages in the spring 2009 Student Life 101 coupon book (available in the SG office and Student Resource Agency), and have a variety of upcoming plans for events and exposure around campus.

Through partnerships with MOSI’s Body Worlds Exhibition, Florida PIRG (Public Interest Research Group) and other key members of the community, Student Government aims to ensure the entire student body is properly educated about the election.

This Monday, January 26th, at the MLK Plaza from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. the Election Rules Commission (ERC) will be promoting the upcoming elections and providing students with information. In addition, the ERC will be at Bull Market on Wednesday, January 28th from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. to answer any questions that students might have.

Students that are not interested in running for an elected position will have the opportunity to volunteer with the polling stations. Student Government’s main goal this semester is to encourage the students to get informed about the candidates and vote during the election.

For more information regarding the election cycle, please contact Michael K. van Hoek, Student Government Supervisor of Elections, at [email protected].

Public Service Announcements

15

Lauren Jones, Coordinator for MPA, worked with several radio stations in an effort to increase awareness about the run-off election. A 15-second public service announcement was written, which ran on one of the major radio stations (97.9.) By starting this conversation, future collaborations with Cox Radio are in the foreseeable future.

Below is the text that was provided for the Public Service Announcement:

“The University of South Florida is holding its annual Student Body Elections, March 10-11. Students are encouraged to “Stampede the Polls” because whoever is elected serves as the voice of over 40,000 students on the Board of Trustees at USF and at the state level in Tallahassee. This person will also oversee a budget of over $11 million in student fees that is allocated to things like CAB and Campus Rec. Students are able to access the ballot on their Blackboard account from 9am-7pm March 10th and 11th.”

Recommendations for next year

16

Based on the implementation of the 2009 Student Body Election, the following recommendations have been generated for future marketing campaigns:

More Application Awareness More attention should be spent promoting the application process for the elections. These promotions should begin at the end of the fall semester, and should include a variety of different medium channels. A mass e-mail at the beginning of the spring should also be sent to the student body that would provide specific links to apply, timelines to be mindful of, and clear and concise descriptions about the importance of these positions. Deans and professors should also be contacted with the request to recommend to student leaders to apply for the different elected positions.

General Candidate Promotions

It could be beneficial for SG marketing to put together some kind of informational packet that would be available to students that explained the platforms of each of the candidates and introduced the candidates to the students. This document could be available online as well as in the office. This would help to make sure that students are both aware that elections are coming up and also make sure that they are informed.

Bulls Country PartnershipsMore election partners in the community should be developed. During the national elections in 2008, the entire business community found creative ways to remind everyone to vote. In the same sense, mutually beneficial partnerships with companies like Chipotle proved to be immensely successful. Consider negotiating special discounts and on-sight promotions with community vendors during the weeks leading up to the election. It is recommended that SG Marketing work with the director of Bulls Country, Mr. Bob Fiallo, to secure some of these partnerships.

Host Kick-Off Event Consider hosting an election kick-off event at the beginning of the week of elections. During this event, give-a-ways and games could be provided to promote an overall fun atmosphere. Computers could also be available during this time for students to cast their votes tfor their presidential and senatorial tickets.

Earlier contact with radio stations

Contact all community radio stations at least three weeks prior to the elections. Many stations expressed a willingness to promote the information on the air, but most said that there was not enough time to run the PSA with the notice that was given.

Important Notes:When promoting the Student Body Elections, it is important for all members of the marketing department to maintain impartiality and separate themselves from the promotions of the different campaign tickets. It is recommended that the director of the department address this issue with his or staff prior to the beginning of the spring semester.

This impartiality can be challenging to maintain on occasion in an environment like Student Government during the elections, but successes of the past can testify that it is crucial to the success of the process.
