Draft The Perfect Morning: Tips, Tricks, and Apps for the Best Morning Yet By Jake Woehlke We’ve all experienced it before. The alarm clock goes off for the tenth time and you continue to hit the snooze button. You finally wake up, groggy and angry, filled with bitterness and resentment at the world, your job, and life in general. And that’s before your first cup of coffee. Studies have shown that, in order to win at life, you need to win your morning. And with a little help from technology, mindfulness, and good food, you can start to take back your morning and your life. In order to create the perfect morning, you need to start the night before. Make sure you actually get some fitful sleep in order to allow your body time to recharge and repair. If you need to use your e-reader in bed, make sure that your e-reader’s brightness is turned down to a manageable level. If a smartphone is the last thing in your hands before the pillow is, use settings that turn down (or completely off) the harmful blue levels of light. Services such as Apple’s Nightshift (found in the Settings app) or the Android app Twilight (free in the Play Store) help to replace the blue light with much more sleep-friendly yellow hues. Once you’ve gained a fitful night of sleep, it’s time to wake up. And while for some of us a simple alarm clock will do the trick, waking up naturally is more effective at easing the wake up process and managing stress. That’s where an app like SleepCycle (free in both Apple and Android appstores) really shines. SleepCycle mimics the natural wake up process by easing you into waking up; a gradual alarm with easygoing sounds and music gently nudges you awake, training you to wake up at a certain time instead of simply cutting off your sleep with the deranged beeping of a normal alarm clock. Now that you’re awake, continue the positive process with a little mindfulness. Your mind is just beginning to process everything that is going on around it, so before you check your emails or Facebook feed, begin your day with three positive affirmations. Filling the blank slate of your mind with positivity will only help to make the day a better one. Try phrases like “I promise to smile today”, “I am grateful for my friends and family”, and “I will appreciate having another day” as examples. Positive affirmations not your thing? Not a problem. Apps like Sleepfulness (from Mindfulness Everywhere) and Meditation Studio (Gaiam) have meditation tracks that take the guesswork out of morning mindfulness. Guided meditations and talks about positive attitudes in the morning help to fill your mind with only positive things to take throughout your day. You’ve filled your mind with good things, now its time your filled your body with the same. The importance of breakfast has been the subject of many studies, and the results are always the

Sample of “Reinventing Norma”, from The Pre-Code Companion, Volume #3By Jake Woehlke

The name Norma Shearer brings with it a vision: that of a demure ingénue with the face of an angel and the soul of a cherub. The roles that she is most known for, like those of Marie Antoinette and Mary Haines (from The Women), show her to be a sweet and simple woman who desires above all else to love and be loved.

However, this sweet screen persona merely acted as a veneer to hide a real personality as a polarizing figure in Hollywood. To her friends she was fiercely loyal and always ready to help in times of need. To her enemies, she was as immovable as granite and as cold as the Canadian winters she endured as a child.

Who is the real Norma Shearer? How did she turn herself into a star of the first magnitude in Hollywood? And why, after only 13 years as a member of Hollywood royalty, did she decide to leave the world that delighted itself with her charms?

Edith Norma Shearer was born in 1902 in the Canadian city of Montreal. She was born into a privileged family, her father a successful businessman and her mother a member of Montreal society. Her early childhood with her siblings Douglas and Athole were, as she described it, “glorious” and “full of freedom”; enjoying a richer life without the burdens of class and extreme wealth. Spending time out of doors and exercising flexibility in her early education only served to enrich her as a person, and strengthen her for what was to come.

After a beloved childhood, the first blow to her life came when her father’s once-booming construction business failed, and the Shearer family had to transplant itself into poorer surroundings. This enforced a lifestyle motto that she never forgot: “Perhaps an endeavor... ...would fail, but that didn’t mean Father had failed”. Separating the act of failing from the person who had failed would come to serve her well and give her the determination needed to conquer the world of show business.

Her interest in performing came at an early age; her first recollection of performing arts came when her mother took a young Norma to see a vaudeville show. She was enamored by the show itself, and told her mother that she wanted to become an actress. Her mother, however, had other ideas: Edith Shearer wanted her daughter to become a concert pianist, and went so

Page 4: Draft The Perfect Morning · Draft The Perfect Morning: Tips, Tricks, and Apps for the Best Morning Yet By Jake Woehlke We’ve all experienced it before. The alarm clock goes off

far as to provide her daughter with a concert piano and a teacher to supply her daughter with lessons. While Norma enjoyed the lessons, it took a stroke of fate and the death of her music teacher to channel her thoughts and energies to acting.

By selling the practicing piano, Edith Shearer secured passage for her and the two Shearer daughters on a trip to New York; the plan was to introduce Norma to the acting and modeling business and make her fortunes there. Through a secured letter of introduction from a Montreal theatre owner, Norma Shearer had her first –abeit biting—introduction into the world of show business by meeting Florenz Ziegfeld, then casting for his Follies. His appraisal of Norma was that she would never make it in show business; bad posture, a cast in one eye, and “stubby legs” all spelled no employment for her.

For a while, Norma Shearer thought she was a failure. Not willing to remember the life lessons she taught herself, a despondent Norma travelled back to Montreal with Edith and Athole and lived there for another year, until fate came to her door. Due to her work while in New York as a model and bit player actress, Norma was finally offered a chance to act in the new movie capital of the nation: Los Angeles. A small studio run by a man named Louis B Mayer sent for Norma and offered her a role in one of his upcoming films, and in 1923, mother and daughter Shearer made the move west-ward.

Ubuntu Planning to “Smash” Crowd-Funding Records with Ubuntu Edge Smartphone(published on personal blog)

by Jacob Woehlke

System software maker Canonical is hoping to break crowd-funding records in an attempt to fund its first smartphone project, called Ubuntu Edge. In an Indiegogo pitch video, Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth described the smartphone and the accompanying operating system as being the “convergence” of a smartphone and desktop-based OS; bringing with it both “power and mobility”. The phone, which is currently still in development, will feature a 4.5″ display made of sapphire crystal, the “very latest and fastest multi-core” processor with 4GB RAM and an interesting 128GB on-board memory. As for software, the Ubuntu Edge will ship with dual boot Ubuntu and Android operating systems (no word on what version of Android will be included on the device), allowing the user to switch between both systems while using the phone. In addition, the phone will come equipped with Bluetooth 4.0, NFC technology, and dual LTE antennas for greater LTE reception. If all goes as planned for Canonical and Ubuntu, the Ubuntu Edge will ship to backers who have contributed $830 or more in May of 2014. According to the funding page, Canonical is asking for $32 million USD to achieve full viability of its Ubuntu Edge project, with a funding deadline of August 21. As of this writing, Ubuntu has raised over $3,207,000. If it does receive all of its requested funding by the deadline, Ubuntu will have indeed broken funding records for this kind of project. Time will only tell if users are ready for the first open-source smartphone.

Britain’s New Prime Minister a New “Iron Lady”

by Jacob Woehlke

After a decisive vote by the Conservative party, British home secretary Theresa May will become the next prime minister of the United Kingdom; the first woman elected to the position in 26 years.

The announcement of May’s arrival to the position comes after a press conference in which British PM David Cameron announced that he would be officially resigning and making way for the new leader on Wednesday, coming after Cameron’s stinging defeat as the face of the Remain campaign throughout Britain’s contentious Brexit vote in late June.

After the #Brexit vote, Cameron announced that he would be stepping down as PM, and began the process of finding a new Conservative Party leader. In the most recent and deciding vote, Home Secretary Theresa May beat out her challenger, Energy Secretary Andrea Leadsom, becoming the new Conservative Party leader and subsequent new Prime Minister.

May, 59, began her life in politics in 1997 when she was elected to Parliament for her home district of Maidenshead, going on from there to become the British Home Secretary in Cameron’s administration in 2010. While there, May focused on issues of crime and police policy, as well as immigration. While she was a Remain supporter in the Brexit campaign, May remained quiet on the topic, choosing instead to openly support David Cameron instead of the Remain campaign itself.

May's ascent to the position of Prime Minister makes her the first woman in 26 years to hold the position and the second woman in history to do the same. She follows the lead of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher (also a Conservative Party leader), who was elected to her position in 1979 and served for 11 years. Both have been called 'formidable' politicians, and have had strong policy positions with experience to back those claims up.

David Cameron will remain as British Prime Minister until July 13th, when he will officially step down and May will gain approval from Queen Elizabeth II to step into the position.

The Great Lakes Vs. Asian Carp

Jake Woehlke

(Originally published in the April 2010 issue of The VOICE Newspaper)

A large lecture hall was filled almost to capacity as concerned citizens braved the dense fog on March 9th to hear Dr. Phil Moy discuss the invasive species known as Asian Carp at the University of Wisconsin- Manitowoc campus. The lecture, titled “Asian Carp At The Doorstep”, was sponsored by the University Lectures and Fine Arts Committee. Dr Moy, who has a doctorate in zoology from Southern Illinois University, began the lecture by talking about the kind of impact the Asian Carp has on the waterways of Wisconsin and Illinois. Asian Carp is what is known as a “filter feeder”, filtering food matter into its body. Carp also feed on plankton through the filter feeding method. Thanks to the building of the Calumet Sag Channel in Illinois, Asian carp entering the Great Lakes through Lake Michi-gan became a distinct possibility. The greatest fear, shared by some of the citi-zens that attended the meeting, was that the Asian carp would greatly harm food-web systems in the Great Lakes by depleting species of aquatic creatures to the point of ruining the currently existing food chain.

According to Dr. Moy, the US Army Corps of Engineers constructed two electric barriers in the Calumet Sag Channel, the first being built in 2002, while Barrier II was built in 2006 but not used until April of 2009. The barriers basically “shock” the fish into learning to not cross the barriers, thus keeping the Asian carp out of Lake Michigan. However, a new process of tracking animal movements by find-ing the subjects DNA, known as “Environmental DNA”, discoveredthat Asian Carp DNA existed five miles north of the electric barriers; indicating that the carp may have somehow crossed the barriers.

In December of 2009, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources released ro-tenone, a chemical normally used as a fish-killing agent and an insecticide, into the waters in an attempt to control the carp population.

According to Dr. Moy, very few Asian Carp have been found near the barriers, and only one Bighead Carp has been found past the barriers. Also, the finding of Environmental DNA of Asian carp past the barriers may not necessarily indicate the presence of live Asian carp in the waterways, but only that the invasive spe-cies may be nearby. When asked about the feasibility of an “absolute” solution to the issue of Asian carp, Dr Moy stated that one possible barrier to Asian carp that would take less of a financial toll and create more of an effective deterrent than the current barriers is the installation of “acoustic bubble barriers” in the Calumet

Sag Channel. These specific barriers would take less energy to run as they only utilize small lights and speakers in the water. The fish (in this case, the Asian carp) have been shown in studies to learn to stay away from the bubbles and an-noying sound waves in the water, thus keeping fish on the right side of the bar-rier.

Hope, however, still remains in the battle against this invasive species. In Dr. Moy’s own words: “There is still time, we can still fight”; and he still plans to con-tinue that fight.
