DRAGONDELIGHTS:Interestingnewstoshareaboutamember,oraboutyourself.
JessicaMader,ourFounder,receivedasurprisevisitfrommanymembersoftheDragonDreamTeam,andwaspresentedamedalfromourItalyFestivalRace.Shewasalsotreatedtoapaddlearch,anewpaddle,newraceshirtsandlotsofhugs.Althoughhealthhaskeptherfrompaddlingforseveralyears,Jessicastilljokingly(butseriously)saysthatnexttoherfamily,creatingtheDragonDreamTeamisherproudestaccomplishment.…andthatwasbeforeherteamwasamongtheworld’sbest!Itstartedin2006withapaddleandanoteleftonherfrontporchfromtheCanadianBosomBuddiesteam.AnditonlytookonedragonboatexperiencetoconvinceJessicathatpaddlingwouldnotonlybeapartofherrecovery,buthernew,activelifeafterbreastcancer.WhenJessicareturnedtoOhio,herplasticsurgeonDr.DougWagner,wassoimpressedwithheramazingrecovery,whichsheattributedtohersummerofpaddling,heofferedtobuyheradragonboat.Shewaswellonherwaytomakingherdragondreamcometrue….andchangingthelivesofsistersurvivorsthroughoutnortheastOhioforyearstocome.

DRAGONDELIGHTS:(continued)GinnyBachecelebratedher80thbirthdayinAugust,andisstillpaddlingaway!HerfamilywasniceenoughtoinviteGinny'sdragonboatsisterstohersurprisebirthdayparty.Weallmetatherdaughter’shousewellbeforeGinnygotthere,andwaitedinthegarage.ThefamilyhadalittlebitoftroublegettinghertherequicklyasGinnythoughtshewasjustcomingforacookout.Butwhenshedidarrive,boywasshesurprised(seepicture).Therewereabout10-12teammatesthatwereabletomakethepartyrightafterpracticeonabeautifulSaturday.Wewerefedtonsoffoodanddrink,soeveryonewashappy!ThefamilyputtogetheragreatslideshowofGinny'slife;shehashadaveryfullonesofar!Ginny,wearesogladwewereabletoparticipateinwishingyouawonderful80thbirthday!Manymore,dragonboatsister!Loveya,DragonDreamTeamDorothyFarkasrecentlybecameagrandmotherforthethirdtime.BabyElianawasbornAugust10weighing5#3ozand16”long.ElianawashappytomeetbigbrotherElijah,whois7,andpuppy-sisterLulu.Congratulations,Dorothy!SEPTEMBER/OCTOBERBIRTHDAYS:Members:Ifwehaveomittedyourbirthday,pleaseletusknow. INSPIRATIONALWORDSFROMTARA:(continued)TorifindsherselfponderingOdysseus,theclassicGreeksea-faringhero.Shequestionstheverynotionofwhatitmeanstobeheroic,concludingthatatrueheroisnotonepossessinghubris;atrueheroisonewholendstalentwhereitisneededmost,butalsohasthewisdomtostepasideandletanotherdothesame.Asshereadiesforhersecondattempt,Torirealizesthatifsheissuccessfulshewillbeonlyoneofmanyheroes.Tori’srevelationresonateswithme.ThisismysixthseasonwiththeDragonDreamTeam.I’vebeentherookie,thepaddlerdeterminedtogetmyspotonthecompetitionteamandtheseriouscompetitor.Thisyear,withtheexceptionofamemorablestintinthedrummer’schair,Iamaninactivemember,sidelinedwhileImanageanewcancerdiagnosis.ThisiswhatIknowforsure:thereisnoroomforOdysseusinadragonboat.LikeTori,wehavemanyheroes.Theyarefoundwelcomingnewmembers,sendingcards,bailingboats,weeding,cheeringfromtheshore,snappingphotos,shootingvideos,carpooling,talkingtothemedia,deliveringmeals,buildingphysicalskillsandcompletingathousandothertasks.Perhapsthecorrectwordiss-heroes…womenwhorecognizethattimepassesandskillsetsebbandflow,butweallhavesomethingofvaluetocontribute.AstheteamreadiesforracesinWestVirginia,IinviteyoutobeaDDTs-hero:lendyourtimeandtalentwhereitwilldothemostgoodwithahappyheart,thenstepasideandletanotherdothesame.
