The piece he found was of the later period (300BC-200AD). It is characterised by its gorgeous red-on-buff finish which is painted with exuberant curvilinear designs – large spiral motifs and concentric giant fingerprint-like swirls. Nothing quite like it has been found elsewhere.Pottery was being made at Ban Chiang from the earliest times. As far back as 3,600BC, techniques such as chord marking, appliqué, incising and burnishing beautified the vast number of blackware vessels being produced in great numbers at these times. The potters, however, never developed the wheel. Their work was done with paddle and anvil, as is still the case in the village today. At the time when Ban Chiang was “discovered”, archaeology in Thailand was in its infancy. The University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania sponsored several excavations under the direction of the late Chester Gorman. One of the most productive of these was a burial site uncovered in the grounds of a contemporary temple: Wat Po Si Nai.The site is now an open archaeological site museum. It is the highlight of a visit to the village. Three excavation levels are displayed, representing the three distinct periods of cultural development at the centre: Early (3,600-1,000BC, Middle (1,000-300BC and Late (300BC-200AD.Around 18 tonnes of artifactual material was collected from the various digs. From this was assembled a travelling exhibition entitled The Ban Chiang Cultural Tradition. The collection is now housed at the excellent Ban Chiang National Museum which is located in the town. The greatest obstacle archaeologists encountered in their work was the damage done to excavation sites by unofficial diggings. International interest sparked in the centre meant that the sale of the highly prized pottery became a lucrative occupation for the villagers. Numerous objects found their way into the hands of private collectors. The digging up, selling and possession of original material have since been banned. Visitors, however, can still purchase quite faithful reproductions of the red-on-buff earthenware made by local potters using traditional tools. These are on sale at modest prices in craft shops in front of the museum. It is also possible to watch these potters at their work. The moulding is done at the tiny nearby village of Ban Kham, and the painting at Ban Poo Loo.Ban Chiang is the cover-name of the so-called “Ban Chiang Cultural Tradition” that flourished in Isan from around 4,000BC to 400AD. The village is but one of around 1,000 prehistoric sites known of in the region. Most still await the archaeologist’s spade.

Getting around speedily in a trishaw.Yet to be uncovered is what might have served as a large central polity for these smaller rural outposts. If such a place existed, its discovery would throw much needed light on the origins of the people who inhabited these ancient settlements.Evidence to date suggests they may well have been indigenous to Isan. Meanwhile, Ban Chiang remains the most informative relic of this precocious bronze-age culture that has turned South-East Asian history upside-down. We can celebrate the fact that it is there.

Dear Venerables, colleagues and Friends, After a long thought and analysis, I have found this similarity of what made Cambodian people to survive through its long turbulent history! Our Ancestors made some formula how we get connected to them through their Traditions and Arts like GOD through BIBLE and Priests, and Lord Buddha, Patray Beidak and Monks. This can be summarized as follows: Khmer traditions + Khmer Arts + Khmers (acted as receivers) = Necessary conditions to be True Khmers in connection with their ancestor greatness. This process has been regenerated every 200 years to secure khmer's survival for long lasting. There are some pieces of evidence through long and recent Khmer’s history: Ban Chiang center, now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in Northeast Thailand today (Nong Han district, Udon Thani Province), used for studies and researches more than a half century by University of Hawai, Michigan, Sendai, Pennsylvania ...(Ancient Khmer city) is the site of earliest Bronze Age culture and iron working in the world and the birthplace of Southeast civilization (for more info on Ban Chiang, please use search engine in Google to find articles relative to Ban Chiang). Period 5th-6th century. Two Khmer Buddhist Monks at FUNAN era have translated Buddhist scriptures in Khmer to Chinese language. Venerables Bikkhus Sangha Pala or Sangha Varman and Mandrasena went to China and worked from 506 to 522 on the request of the King of Cambodia for the Emperor WU of China . The translations can still be found in the Chinese Tri pitaka.

Period 8th-10th century. Jayvarman II made Cambodia free from JAVA in 9th century after successful military and economical restructures and moving to Phnom Kulen. Many historic monuments were built.  Period 11th-13th century. Many other famous monuments were constructed: Angkor Watt, Bayon ... Period 18th-20th century (King Sihanouk made Cambodia free from France on November 9th 1954 without a single shot through Geneva Conference, LaHaye court of justice on July 15th 1962 has decided Phnom Preah Vihea as the sole ownersip belonging to Cambodia, and again on October 23rd 1991 through Paris Peace Agreement, NASA paid special attentions to Angkor 1994 to 2007 and so on. A Famous Buddhist Monk went to Phnom KuLen (Preah Kruh Khmeng from Watt Choeung Prey, province of Kompong Cham ) in year 1965? And identified the cycle of 200 years for Khmers. Period 21st-22nd century. On year 2003, Angkor was listed as world heritage (UNESCO) and on 2007 as the most populous city in the world at 10th century, Preah Vihea listed as World Heritage by UNESCO on July 8th 2008. Cambodia becomes a new permanent of UNESCO Permanent Committee on 10/27/2009. Khmer Empire is a main document on the July 2009 issue of National Geographic Magazine. His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni becomes on March 13 2010 part of the Foreign Associates of L’Academie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, the ranks of a prestigious French Institution, one of the five academies constituent of the Institution de France. No one or/and no power in this world can disturb/interrupt this spiritual and logical process as long as all Khmers play the role as receivers and promoters of their Heroes ancestors and works through knowledge and continuity. Cambodia will be in decline only and only if Khmers don't work for and by themselves and consequently deviate from this formula.   Any comment, please forward to [email protected]. Thank you.

My Suggestions

Until 1960’s, Southeast-Asia was considered to have been its cultural development resulted from external influences, primary China to the North and India to the WEST. But Archaeological work at Nok Tha andlater, Ban Chiang on the Khorat plateau North-east Thailand has demonstrated this view to be incorrect.The excavation and the  field survey  have  qualified the centre of an independent, and vigorous, cultural development  in the 4th millennium BC which shaped contemporary social and cultural evolution over much of Southeast-Asia and  beyond , into the Indonesian archipelago.  From hunter-gatherer economy to  sedentary farming, with domesticated cattle, pigs, and chickens and elementary from of dry-rice cultivation and later wet-riceFarming (1000-500/300 BC).  (B6)

So,  the freedom and democracy  started  at the 5th millennium BC in Khmer cultures (Ban Chiang was the centre of a remarkable phenomenon of Human Cultural, Social, and Technological evolution in the 5th millennium BC, which occurred independently in this area of South-east Asia and spread widely over the whole region. (B8)).This is justified by the very rich  cultures  in Cambodia: freedom of poetry, thinking, selection, … language, traditions, sculptures, art works (Monuments, inscriptions,  writings ….).
