which were very difficult, but

even under pressure they

were able to answer

brilliantly.

I would like to take this

opportunity to say a huge

To celebrate World Book

Day on Thursday 3rd March

Year 7 students were

treated to a range of

themed events.

As well as receiving free

book tokens, students took

part in a 'Book Swap'

where they had the

opportunity to exchange

favourite reads for those of

others.

We also held a film

screening in the library

after school, popcorn was

eaten, hot chocolate was

drunk and many giggles

were shared over David

Walliams' hilarious 'The

Boy in the Dress'!

Thank you Year 7 for your

enthusiasm and excellent

behaviour throughout the

day.

Roll on World Book Day

Queensmead hosted the

fourth Hillingdon Year 8 Team

Maths Challenge on Thursday

15th March. Thirteen other

schools from the borough

brought a team of four very

enthusiastic and able

mathematicians and it was a

great evening of maths.

First up was the group round

in which the four students

spent forty-five minutes work-

ing together on ten questions.

The Queensmead team had

been really focusing on this

round in their practice

sessions and it paid off as

they got eight out of the ten

correct.

Following that was the cross

number which some would

say is a difficult round but not

for these teams as the

standard was very high. The

final round was the relay. The

students put everything they

had into solving the problems

and running between the

teacher and their other team

members.

It is always a great event for

the spectators and there were

plenty of teachers and parents

there to enjoy this finale.

After all that excitement the

results were in. In third place

was Northwood, second place

was Vyners and the winners

by twenty points were

Queensmead!

We are really proud of the

commitment and teamwork

demonstrated by the team

Fatima Hussain, Nataliya

Klymko, Junayd James and

Kai Strachan, they are very

deserved winners.

All the teachers and students

there were really positive

about how much they had

enjoyed the event, so I would

like to say a big thank you to

the Queensmead Maths

department who all helped to

make such a great evening.

Forty excitable Year 8

students travelled on the

Central line for this terms

reward trip to Bounce, the

home of Ping Pong, on

Tuesday 8th March.

On arriving at their

destination students firstly

warmed up before being met

by their two games makers

for the evening. Competitive

games of around the world

had been arranged as well as

a doubles tournament.

During the evening everyone

managed to play everyone

until the knockout rounds

which led to a final. Kai

Strachan and Lewis

Cole-Richardson versus Kai

Arora and Kavith Fernando

Bellanage. Both pairs battled

it out in an extremely close

and intense match but

eventually the overall

competition winners were Kai

Strachan and Lewis

Cole-Richardson.

Congratulations boys great

teamwork and skill shown.

Well done to all those who

came and participated, a

great evening thoroughly

enjoyed by students and staff

alike.

On Tuesday 22nd March,

forty seven students and

four staff members went to

Queensway Ice and Bowl

for some ice-skating and

bowling fun for their

rewards trip.

Many students had never

skated before and at first

took to the ice like Bambi

but after a little bit of

practice most were able to

skate round without too

much trouble apart from

the odd wobble!

Afterwards we did some

bowling which many

students were much more

confident at. There were

even a couple of strikes!

The trip was thoroughly

enjoyed by all and was

finished with some pizza

which everyone ate plenty

of.

WE Day

On Wednesday 9th March

I attended WE Day at

Wembley Arena.

I had such an amazing

day watching the

festivities while sitting

with a group of young

people I had travelled

with to India as part of

the scholarship trip last

August.

I also had the chance to

go up on stage which was

an amazing experience. I

spoke about all the work

I have been doing for the

charity and what I will be

doing in the future.

There were so many

celebrities and guest

speakers this year Rita

Ora, Fleur East, Princess

Beatrice and Holly

Branson to name but a

few.

It was such a fantastic

day that everyone in the

arena left feeling very

inspired.

On the weekend of 12th March

Year 11 Bronze Duke of

Edinburgh students completed

their practice expedition.

Students had to walk fully self

sufficient - learning that this

meant having to carry all their

equipment: tents, stoves,

clothes and food for the

weekend. This was along

routes planned as a team,

which on paper, back in the

classroom, did not seem so

hilly but students soon

realised that it is called the

Chiltern Hills for a reason.

After a full day of navigation

practice and a quick lunch by

the river we set up camp at

Paccar Scout Camp.

The next challenge was to

cook an evening meal on

primitive trangias stoves.

Dinners varied in complexity

from pot noodles to some

interesting super noodle chow

meins. However Enkel Cipa

chef extraordinaire topped the

lot and treated his group to a

delightful pasta bolognese

dish, eventually…..once the

water finally started to boil!

The following day involved

another ten kilometre walk

along differing routes up a few

more hills, with students all

alternating as lead navigator.

With this practice complete

and successfully passed by

everyone, students will be

ready for their assessed

qualifying expedition in July.

Ski Trip

On Good Friday forty

three students and six

staff went on an

exciting coach journey

to Austria for the 2016

Ski trip.

Although the journey

was long, it was well

worth it. The location

was fantastic and once

we arrived at the top of

the mountain on the

first morning, the views

were beautiful.

The students were

grouped according to

their ski experience and

everybody set upon

their journey to

becoming the next

Olympic hopeful.

Skiing is a very tiring

activity and five hours

skiing per day took its

toll on everybody.

However, once the

skiing lessons finished

the day continued with

a multitude of evening

activities. These

activities ranged from

Football, Trampolining,

Table Tennis, Pool,

Squash, High ropes

course, Indoor Beach

Volleyball, Pizza Night,

Bowling, Disco,

Tobogganing and an

Awards ceremony.

The week was excellent

and everybody made

huge improvements as

the week progressed.

Skiers of the week were

Nicole Pessel and

Maciej Lagiewka. Most

improved skier was

This term Year 10 Business

GCSE students have taken

part in the nationwide 'Tenner'

competition to find the next

generation of budding

entrepreneurs.

The ‘Tenner Challenge’ is for

young people who want to get

a taste of what it is like to be

an entrepreneur. It gives

them an opportunity to think

of a new business idea and

make it happen, using real

money ‘a tenner’ to take

calculated risks in the

business field, make a profit

and make a difference.

Each student was pledged £10

to come up with a business

idea and trade. Examples of

some of the businesses

include: selling cookies;

milkshakes; smoothies; pizza;

car washing service; hand-

made t-shirts

and jewellery boxes.

There are also weekly

competitions including Best

Advert. Priya Patel and Grace

Wells aka ‘Fruit Fusion’

successfully beat off stiff

competition from thousands of

entries to be crowned

winners.

The competition culminated in

a Trade Fair in the Hall on

Thursday 24th March hosted

by the students.

The National Citizen Service

(NCS) have been working with

Queensmead for the past four

years and last year saw over

fifty Year 11 students sign up

for the programme which ran

over the summer holidays.

This term Year 11 and Post 16

students have been given the

opportunity to sign up to the

National Citizen Service

(NCS), a government-funded

programme for 15-17 year

olds. So far there are thirty

nine Year 11 students who

have already signed up to

take part and there are still

spaces available.

Working through physical and

personal challenges, this once

-in-a-lifetime experience

empowers them to build skills

to get ahead in work and life,

whilst engaging with their

local area. Lasting eighteen

days over the summer

holiday, with twelve different

start dates, it is flexible so

takes into account holidays

and other commitments you

may have.

Delivering the programme

costs over £1000, but NCS

only ask for £50 and financial

support is available when

needed. This covers all

accommodation, food,

transport, and specialist kit

for the residential parts of the

programme.

Jaime Ngo, Post 16 took part

in the programme last year

and found it extremely

rewarding. Jaime is pictured

below with just a few of the

many students she met from

schools across the borough,

who also took part.

Queensmead students have

had an outstanding finish to

the winter sports season.

The boys have made it to four

borough football finals which

is a school record, with Year 7

winning 4-1, Year 9 winning

dramatically on penalties after

a 3-3 draw with Douay

Martyrs. Year 10 lost out

narrowly to Harefield

Academy 5-3 in a thrilling

game.

Congratulations also goes to

the Year 11 boys’ football

team who beat Abbotsfield in

the re-arranged Borough Cup

Final on Thursday 14th April.

This was an excellent effort

from Year 11 boys not only in

this game but throughout

their time at the school. They

have certainly been the most

successful team in our recent

history.

The boys have also been

enjoying a week of rugby

tournaments for Years 7-10,

with so far Year 7 winning

their tournament and Year 8

coming third in their

tournament.

A representative team from

Year 7 and 8 took part in a

Gaelic Football Tournament

which is another first for the

school.

The girls have also finished

their netball season strongly

with Year 9 and Year 10

progressing out of their

league groups and contesting

the borough semi finals

against Northwood College,

unfortunately both missing

out narrowly in the finals.

Thank you to all students and

staff who have contributed to

extra-curricular activities this

term, a great effort by all.

Hopefully we can match these

successes in the summer term

when we turn our attention to

the summer sports of cricket,

rounders, athletics and tennis.

On Friday 18th March students

in Years 7 to 10 participated

in a mile run to support Sport

Relief. It was an enjoyable

event which identified some

great runners in the School!

First to run were Year 9’s with

fantastic performances from

Jack Robinson who completed

it first, followed by Byron Hill

and Trinity Derbyshire.

Year 10’s then followed with

Harrison Fitzgerald being the

leading boy and Charlotte

Morgan the leading girl.

It was then time for Year 8’s

to give it a try with Ethan

Watts putting in a tremendous

effort and completing eight

laps. He was followed by Kai

Strachan and Nathan

Wharton. Sophie Taylor was

the winner for the girls with

an excellent run.

Lastly the Year 7’s took to the

field and a huge effort was

put in by all! Dylan Love

completed the race first with

an excellent time followed by

Archie King. Macy Willis came

in soon after as the leading

girl.

Well done to all who

participated. The total

amount raised was £1400

which will all go to the charity

and support a very good

cause.
