REGIONAL ORGANIZATION OF THE NORTH-EASTERN

THESSALIAN COAST IN LATE ANTIQUITY

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the study of the settlements history in the north-eastern thessalian coast in late antiquity. A cartographic representation has been created inorder to describe and clarify the historical topography. The physical and political geographyhas been studied in order to illustrate the regional context and locate the settlements.Archaeological findings and literary sources have been used for presenting the materialculture and the anthropogenic activities, specifically in the early byzantine period (ca. 4 th -6th A.D.). Productive activities, civic and ecclesiastical hierarchy, settlements and roadnetworks are combined for the elucidating this frontier zone between Provincia Thessaliaand Provincia Macedonia. The final goal of the paper is to enrich historical-geographicknowledge regarding the north-eastern thessalian coast in late antiquity and correlating this

information with communication networks and systems of cultural exchange.
