Draped Bowl Project

• The draped bowl is a slab of clay, rolled out into an even thickness, then draped over a plastic cup form. The form holds the clay in the shape of a bowl until it dries out into a bisque ware state and is dry enough to support its own form.

• Supplies:– Slab roller– Form (cup)– Clay release for table (paper or sheet)– Clay release for form (plastic bag)– Pin Tool

• Directions:

1. Roll out a slab of clay with a rolling pin.• Use a release between the clay and the

table while rolling the clay out or it will stick to the table.

2. Put a plastic release over your cup (form).

• You can use the plastic grocery bags.

3. Pick up your clay slab, center it over your cup (form), and gently drape the slab over your form.

4. Shape your bowl by pushing some clay in toward the center and pulling other parts out so that the outside edge looks wavy (Keep in mind that your are making your bowl upside down).

5. Gently press the center of the bottom of the bowl down to form the foot (the rim where the bowl will sit on).

6. Smooth out any imperfections while your clay is workable (once the clay is fired in the kiln at about 2000 degrees, it will be permanent).

7. Fact: clay shrinks considerably while it is drying. Make sure your form is not too snug around the top of the upside down cup or the bottom of the bowl will crack while drying.

8. Finish your bowl off by lightly writing your name in the bottom of the bowl with a pin tool (do not carve your name or designs too deep or it may make a hole and will make the bowl more fragile).
