Drácula. La leyenda. Suite Sinfónica I. El castillo misterioso. (compás 2 …) Por los caminos de la región de Transilvania, Rumanía... La espesa niebla, se mezcla con el humo de una chimenea casi apagada, allá a lo lejos. Es la única casa de leñadores que encontramos después de un día y medio de viaje. El carro, viejo, tirado por dos corceles negros, camina al paso con las riendas tensas, el camino es estrecho, el horizonte oscuro, y el único sonido, el de las herraduras, hace temblar a los mismos caballos. Pasadas dos jornadas con el frío como el único compañero de viaje se divisa, tras una escarpada colina, entre la niebla…un impresionante castillo. Sus cuatro torres, erosionadas por el viento, marcan el horizonte oscuro que ilumina sólo el tenue resplandor de la luna. Es el castillo de Drácula, que nace en la misma cima de una montaña. Los viajeros, estupefactos, se sientes tan atraídos como si de ellos tirara un lazo invisible...no pueden volver marcha atrás. II. Danza de Drácula (antes de empezar la música) En el inmenso salón del castillo, el conde, organiza una cena de gala para todos sus ilustres invitados venidos de la ciudad. Acude toda la aristocracia, de la comarca, las damas, con sus mejores vestidos, los señores lujosamente ataviados, con sus caballos que tiran solemnemente de sus carrozas. Todo es perfecto, una noche mágica, lo mejor de cada casa se encuentra en el castillo para la gran gala. Los señores cenan opíparamente, brindan por la hospitalidad del conde Drácula, y empieza el baile. El anfitrión tiene el honor de comenzar con la princesa más joven. Todos le siguen de inmediato, bailando y sonriendo al ritmo de la música. Un vals, una polka, una mazurka, todo es perfecto esa noche. De repente...los criados apagan casi todas las velas...dejando un tenue resplandor en el centro del salón. Todos lo saben, ha llegado la hora. Sonrisas temblorosas se observan en las bellas damas. El conde, maravillado, gira y gira sobre si mismo, con la mano extendida. Y así, casi a ciegas, como embrujado, escogerá a la dama más bella; a la dama que bailará con él...
III. La noche de las tinieblas (antes de empezar la música) El sol se ha escondido tras la montaña. Los murciélagos empiezan a revolotear con frenesí, dirigiéndose en una comitiva casi hechizada, a lo alto de la torre del castillo. Allí, el fuego de una antorcha, empieza a jugar con las sombras. Los aldeanos, allá a lo lejos, tratan de sofocar rápidamente sus pequeños fuegos, para poder pasar desapercibidos. La noche, fría y tenebrosa ha caído sobre la comarca, la niebla cubre hasta la copa de los árboles, y Drácula, descendiendo solemnemente por centro de la escalinata, Esta noche no hay baile, es una noche como la mayoría de noches. El conde, un espíritu solitario, espera a la medianoche, sin prisas, con la absoluta certeza de que todos esperan su visita atemorizados tras sus frágiles puertas de madera....y el conde comienza a vagar, como si se deslizara por la niebla, acompañado rítmicamente por el ulular de los búhos, que le hacen de guía. Se lanza al valle, como volando, quedando de pie, majestuoso, frente a una aldea, saboreando, ya, lo que va a ser un gran espectáculo de hechizos y sangre. Asalta una casa, otra, después sigue colina arriba, otra y otra. Los habitantes chillan de terror, el vampiro no se saciará hasta haber entrado en el último de los hogares... La noche va pasando a un ritmo frenético, y ya no quedan puertas por abrir. Entonces...al pie de la colina más alta, desafiante, con su capa enarbolada al aire, contempló toda su obra, toda su destrucción...en la noche de las tinieblas.
Optional text. The following text is included for a possible performance of the work with narrator. The music is not directly connected to the text, so its reading and insertion in the work, as well as its modification, is completely at ease. Nevertheless we include a few notes as guide. The Author emphasizes that the composition was conceived without text and that its reading must not influence the interpretation of the work.
Dracula. The legend. Symphonic suite I. The mysterious castle. (bar 2 ... ) Somewhere on the paths of the region of Transylvania, Romania… In the distance, the dense fog is mixed with the smoke of a nearly out chimney. This woodcutter house is the only one we have come across after travelling for a day and half. The old carriage that is pulled by a pair of black steeds goes at a good pace with its tight reins. The way is narrow, the horizon, dark, and the only noise, the noise of the horseshoes, makes horses themselves tremble. Two day’s journeys later with the cold as the only fellow passenger, we can make out, behind a craggy hill, into the fog…an amazing castle. Its four towers which are eroded because of the wind mark the dark horizon which is only illuminated by the faint moonlight. It is Dracula’s Castle which rises right from the top of a mountain. The travellers, astonished, feel so attracted to it as if an invisible rope pulled them...they cannot come back. II. Dracula’s dance (before the music begins) In the huge hall of the castle, the count arranges a banquet for all his distinguished guests who come from the city. All the aristocracy from the region is present: ladies and gentlemen who are dressed up arrive by carriages which are pulled solemnly by its horses. Everything is perfect, it is a wonderful night, and the best in the society is in the castle for the great gala. People eat sumptuously and drink a toast to count Dracula. The dancing begins. The host has the honour to start it with the youngest princess. The rest join them immediately, dancing and smiling in time to the music. Waltz, polka, mazurka...everything is perfect that night. Suddenly, the servants put out almost all the candles...a weak brightness leaves in the centre of the ballroom. Everybody knows it: the time has come. Shaky smiles can be observed in the face of the most beautiful ladies. The count, amazed, turns around time and time again holding out his hand. And like this, nearly blindly, captivated, he will pick out the prettiest lady, the lady who will dance with him the Dracula’s dance.
III. The night of the darkness (before the music begins) The sun is hidden behind the mountain. The vamps begin to flutter around madly going to the top of the tower of the castle in a nearly bewitched procession. Over there, the light of a torch begins to play with the shadows. The villagers, in the distance, try to smother their little fires quickly to go unnoticed. The night, cold and dark, has fallen over the region, the fog covers even the top of the trees, and Dracula, goes down the staircase solemnly. Tonight there is no ball, it is just another night more. The count, a solitary spirit, waits the midnight with no haste, being sure everybody is scared behind his weak wood doors expecting his visit... And the Count starts wandering like sliding in the fog while the rhythm of the owls ululating guides him. He goes deep into the valley like flying, standing in front of a small village; he is already savouring the next show of spells and blood. He storms a house, and another one. Then he continues up the hill, other more houses again and again. The residents scream with fear, the vamp won’t be quenched till he went into the last home... The night goes in a frantic way and there are no more doors to open. Then, at foot of the highest hill, in a defiant way with his cloak waving because of the wind, he contemplated all his work, all his destruction...in the night of the darkness.
IV. Muerte de Drácula. Amanecer (inicio en compás 3) En una fría mañana, los habitantes de una ciudad lejana, se reúnen asustados con el fin de terminar con esta pesadilla. Terminar con la vida del vampiro más sanguinario y malvado de la historia. Cargados con cruces, lanzas y hondas, atravesaron el bosque, oyéndose los propios latidos del corazón, encogido por el miedo. Una vez al pie del castillo, encendieron una gran hoguera, rodeándolo todo con un fuego que iluminaba el oscuro cielo. Desde detrás de unos árboles, un aldeano, que había seguido expectante a la comitiva, advirtió, en voz baja, que la única manera de acabar con Drácula, según la leyenda que se contaba por el lugar, era clavándole una estaca de madera en su corazón, mostrándole a la vez, un crucifijo. Los señores, boquiabiertos, pero sin esperar un segundo, arrancaron incrédulos, pero al tiempo asustados, más si cabía, una gran rama de uno de los árboles que había alrededor, afilándola con sus cuchillos, hasta formar una perfecta estaca, como lo hacían en sus campos de cultivo. Otros se encargaron de cruzar en perpendicular dos maderos grandes, del tamaño de un hombre, atados por una rienda de uno de los caballos, que admitió sin rechistar el tirón. Todo valía. El conde Drácula, empezó a gritar, con un sonido agudo pero sordo, y voló desde allá arriba, haciendo encoger de miedo hasta al más valiente de los señores. Se posó de pie, y uno a uno, fueron rodeándole, hasta que él, con un sonrisa irónica, pensó “que más ordenados estarían para su gran festín”. De pronto, y conforme se iba cerrando el corro, uno de ellos alzó a duras penas el tosco crucifijo, y Drácula, al verlo, se lanzó hacia atrás, hasta que tropezó con la otra parte del grupo que lo rodeaba. Cayó de espaldas, y entonces, asustado, suplicó que le dejaran en paz... Que no volvería a aterrorizar a nadie... Sin verlo llegar, una inmensa aguja de madera se clavó en su pecho, y Drácula, el poderoso conde, el señor del terror, murió sin apenas poder dar un último suspiro. A los pocos minutos, perdida la noción del tiempo, el sol salía tras la montaña, y un melódico gorjeo de pájaros acompañaba los últimos esfuerzos de los valientes señores. El sol despuntó con fuerza por encima de la cumbre, borrando el último manto de niebla, y se hizo el nuevo día. Drácula había muerto...para siempre. Caminaron a la aldea más próxima ,exhaustos, donde había una taberna que acababa de abrir su humilde puerta y dieron cuenta de ello a los habitantes, formándose de inmediato una algarabía de muchachos saltando y de hombres pidiendo vino para celebrar la gesta. A los pocos días, toda la comarca sabía la buena nueva y se celebró un gran baile en el palacio de la princesa, agasajando a los valientes caballeros, y todas las aldeas de alrededor se unieron felices para festejar la noticia que les traía paz y felicidad para siempre. IV. Dracula’s death. Dawn (begin in bar 3) A cold morning, the inhabitants of a far city have a meeting with the aim of putting an end to the nightmare: to kill the most bloodthirsty and evilest vamp of the history. They crossed the forest carrying crosses, spears and slings. On the way they could listening their own beats of their contracted hearts because of the fear. When they were at foot of the castle they lighted a big bonfire which surrounded it and illuminated the dark sky. From behind some trees, a villager who had followed the delegation expectantly advised quietly that the unique way to do away with Dracula, according the legend that was told in the region, was to drive a stake in his heart while someone show him a crucifix. Gentlemen got open-mouthed and, without delay but with fear at same time, they pulled up a big branch of one of the trees that were around them. They sharpened it with their knives till making a perfect stake like they used to in their fields. Other ones took charge of putting two big pieces of timber that had the size for man in a perpendicular angle and they tied them with a rein of one of the horses that accepted the tug without saying anything. Anything went. The count Dracula started shouting a high but dull sound and he flew from up there making shrink back in fear even the bravest of the men. He landed standing up and, one by one, the villagers surrounded him till he thought with an ironic smile “they would be tidier for his great banquet”. Suddenly, as the circle of people became closed, one of them lifted the crude crucifix hardly and Dracula, when he saw it, went back till he stumbled against the other part of the group that was surrounding him. He fell over and then he, frightened, begged to leave him alone and he won’t terrify anyone never again… Don’t being aware of it, a large woody needle was stuck in his chest and Dracula, the powerful count, the lord of the fear, died without being able to breathe one’s last. Few minutes later, without knowing the time, the sun rose behind the mountain and a melodic chirping of the birds accompanied the last efforts of the brave gentlemen. The sun shone strongly over the top of the hill blotting out the cloak of fog and the new day arrived. Dracula was dead…for ever. They walked to the closer village, exhausted, where there was a tavern that just had opened its humble door and they told the residents what happened. Immediately a din began: children jumped and men ordered wine to celebrate the heroic deed. A few days later, all the region knew the glad tidings and a great ball was celebrated in the royal palace, the brave gentlemen were smothered with attentions and all the villages around the region met happily to celebrate the new that brought peace and happiness for good.
