editor’s letter

Hello and welcome to the Elysia summer magazine!

We celebrated midsummer in style here as the Farm Team led us on a company Farm Walk and then hosted a bonfire which was much enjoyed by all! We were even very lucky with the weather, as the blousy rain clouds that we had lived under earlier that week left us alone for the afternoon!

In this edition we are very happy to share with you the news that Elysia is working with Garden Organic Ryton, to design and build a working biodynamic garden open to the public. We have the first pictures and an article all about the aims and vision of the garden, and how you can be a part of its creation.

Elysia has opened its first shop in Notting Hill, selling the complete Dr.Hauschka and Liv ranges. We hope you get along there soon and I look forward to hearing what you think!

This edition is also all about weddings – summer weddings! We had such fun at the photo shoot with three brides, two mothers of the bride, and one suspicious partner in tow!! We have turned our thoughts to wedding favours, presents, posys, body beautiful, hair and make up, so delve in and enjoy your day this summer!

Sun care is so important, especially at this time of year, and we have taken an in-depth look into this within the magazine. Playing safe in the sun means that you can play again the next day – take a look at our article and don’t forget your sunscreen!

We have a bounty of new products from Dr.Hauschka, perfect for the summer. Lemon Body Moisturiser complements Lemon Body Wash, and is not only good for cellulite conditions, but is also a great wake up on a warm, sunny morning! We also now have Rose Day Cream Light – just like the Rose Day Cream, only lighter! Perfect for those of us who don’t need the richness, but still want the Rose.

Following on from our success winning the Natural Health Beauty Awards, Dr.Hauschka was voted the best Ethical Brand by The Sunday Times Style Magazine readers. This was a huge thrill for us all because Dr.Hauschka is the genuine article. These superb natural products, that work so well, have been produced with the same dedication and care towards our skin and the environment, for the past 40 years. We are proud to work with such wonderful products and we are glad that you think they are too.

As ever, I love to hear from you, so if you have the time and the inclination, please get in touch, and don’t forget – we are always looking for new Dr.Hauschka models!

Enjoy your summer!

Nicola“My Aunty, a fan of Rose Day Cream, first introduced me to the Dr.Hauschka range. I then saw a newspaper article recommending the Dr.Hauschka Treatment to balance and calm the skin. From the first time I used Dr.Hauschka I could see the difference. My skin looked revitalised and fresh and it’s the first thing that has really worked for me. I think a lot of products on the market are synthetic and confuse the skin. I love that Dr.Hauschka products are natural and organic, designed to strengthen and support the skin instead of masking problems. I use Cleansing Clay Mask weekly to keep my skin in tip-top condition, as it purifies and brings my skin to life. Another favourite is Rejuvenating Mask. I smooth a thin layer under my Normalising Day Oil when travelling or to give my skin a boost after a late night. It’s also great under make-up. It gives my skin a radiant glow and keeps my make-up fresh.“

Susan“I have used all the well-known brands of skin care washes and creams and found their cleansing routines a chore. Now I have discovered Dr.Hauschka I look forward to using the products. One of my favourites is Rhythmic Night Conditioner, which I use every other month. It is amazing that I no longer need a thick night cream. Also on a recent holiday I used the Dr.Hauschka Sunscreen Lotion SPF15, which was excellent at preventing sunburn in the strong tropical sun.”

Lemonfoot bathIndulge yourself in a Lemon foot bath - a great way to help cool you down after a long hot day on your feet.

Fill a bowl with cool water; a washing up bowl will be fine as long as your feet fit in comfortably! Make sure that the water is deep enough to cover your ankles. Add two capfuls of Lemon Bath and soak your feet for at least seven minutes.

When to use Lemon Body Oil• Whenever the skin needs firming. The excellent

formative powers of Lemon are imbued within this enlivening body oil. Massage into the skin to improve its tone and suppleness.

• When cellulite is an existing problem, Lemon Body Oil is ideal for treating the affected areas. Massage into the skin using circling movements, or knead the skin, working towards the heart. Continue for ongoing maintenance, as part of a healthy lifestyle approach.

• Whenever you are feeling sluggish and it’s hard to get going. The awakening aroma of Lemon Body Oil provides just what’s needed to revive you and your skin. Especially helpful in the morning, after a late night, with the effect lasting the whole day through.

• As a refreshing and uplifting body oil for the whole family. Use after sports, dance or play.

• If a lot of time is spent indoors without receiving enough sunlight.

• For enhanced effect, use the oil after showering or bathing with Dr.Hauschka Lemon Bath or Lemon Body Wash, while the skin is still moist and most receptive.

Lemon Body Oil

did you know

The Lemon essential oil used in Dr.Hauschka Lemon Body Oil is expressed from the non-waxed peel of biodynamically grown Lemons, which ensures the high quality of the product.

Refreshing Dr.Hauschka Lemon Body Oil captures the warmth and energy of the sun. These health-giving qualities are released by massaging the body oil into the skin, working to improve its tone and the fluid processes in the tissues, thus strengthening the connective tissues. Ideally used in the morning, this invigorating product is suitable for all-over massage or for local use to treat specific conditions.

Connective tissue can be found in the dermis and subcutaneous layers, which are situated below the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin. This tissue is made up of collagen and elastin fibres. These fibres are vital, as they provide strength and elasticity for the skin’s structure, enabling it to hold its form and return to shape after movement.

These strong fibres can weaken with the development of cellulite. When the blood and lymph circulation is impaired, tissue congestion occurs. This causes the fat cells in the subcutaneous layer to swell and the condition of the interweaving collagen and elastin

fibres to deteriorate. The collagen fibres can become thinner or may even disintegrate, while the elastin fibres thin or thicken and lose their elasticity. This then allows the swollen fat cells to push upward between the fibres resulting in the familiar ‘orange-peel’ appearance of cellulite.

Once we have improved our circulation and completed our detoxifying treatment using Birch-Arnica Body Oil, we can continue with the daily application of Lemon Body Oil to restore suppleness to the connective tissue.

In the spring edition of Elysia we spoke about how it is vital to improve blood and lymphatic circulation and to detoxify the tissue. The next step is to help strengthen the weak connective tissue fibres.

Louise“I have always loved feeling feminine and have appreciated beautiful things. In the past I enjoyed using a range of beauty products and cosmetics without thinking about what was in them. Like many young women, I was influenced by the glossy and glamorous marketing of the cosmetics industry. After being diagnosed with a rare blood disorder, I increasingly thought about what I was putting into my body and insisted on good organic food and a more holistic approach to health and medicine. In order to achieve energy and wellbeing over time I realised that I was being kind to my body from the inside out, but wasn’t taking the same care of what I was putting onto my body. I wanted to find a range of products that allowed me to pamper myself and feel feminine and beautiful, whilst knowing that what I put onto my skin was genuinely kind and good to my body. I eventually found Dr.Hauschka….the rest is history!! I feel confident that I am taking care of my health whilst feeling completely pampered. These products represent me and my needs perfectly.“

Rosemary Leg and Arm Toner is a must to take with you on your flight if you suffer from swollen ankles and feet. Apply by stroking upwards from your ankles towards your knees. Because of the lightness of this product it can be applied directly over flight tights. Trial sizes are available. Remember also to constantly flex your feet and legs.

To help keep your skin hydrated use Facial Toner. If you are only taking the trial size with you in hand luggage, pour a couple of drops into the palms of your hands and gently hold them against your skin. Hand Cream is another must have.

If you are on a long-haul flight take your cleanser, toner and moisturiser with you in your hand luggage. The Daily Face Care Kits contain trial sizes of these products, or trial sizes can be bought individually.

I also recommend a box of ten Rhythmic night Conditioner ampoules to help you skin cope and adjust. On the morning of your flight apply 1-2 ampoules after cleansing and again when you arrive that evening, cleanse and apply 1-2 ampoules.

for the flight on holidayEffective protection against the sun’s rays is essential. Choosing the right sunscreen depends on your skin’s sensitivity to the sun, how tanned it is already, your activity and the sun’s intensity. Sunscreens SPF8-30 provide a range of protection for the whole family.

If there is sunburn, gently pat a couple of Rhythmic Conditioner Sensitive ampoules onto the affected area, followed by a thick coat of Rejuventating Mask or Rose Day Cream to soothe and help heal the skin.

In the heat of summer, the sun, wind and sea can all take their toll by drying out your hair, making it dull and unmanageable. neem Hair Oil is an excellent intensive treatment containing Neem leaf and Chamomile extracts that will vitalise and soften your hair, leaving it silky and shiny.

After a day in the sun, apply Firming Mask to provide your skin with hydration and help support its elasticity.

After-Sun Lotion keeps the skin on your body feeling refreshed and supple.

Apply sunscreen regularly when outside

After a day in the sun, rehydrate with Firming Mask

Apply Rosemary Leg and Arm Toner with upward strokes to help puffy ankles

Don’t leave home without...

Summer holidays for me mean the British south coast, sandy beaches and hopefully some sunshine! I have picked out some of the Dr.Hauschka products that I always take with me. If you are flying to certain sunshine abroad, I have included some helpful skin care tips for the flight.

Back in 2005 an appeal came through my door from Garden Organic. I sent off a donation, and acting as Chairman of Elysia, I brought the paperwork into work to show

my fellow owners. Something was calling to me…

We set off for a visit, and as we walked around and heard what they do there, a seedling idea began to grow between us. 18 months later we are working closely with Garden Organic to create a biodynamic training garden!

You will know by now that the Dr.Hauschka products are created using biodynamic plant ingredients and that we are using biodynamic methods here at Stockwood. But what an exciting prospect and opportunity it is to be working with Garden Organic on this project.

We believe that biodynamics represents an incredible opportunity for the world. Biodynamic gardening is environmentally friendly, holistic and inexpensive. What’s more, it not only heals the soil but produces

food of high nutritional quality. We want to introduce people to this way of gardening!

Biodynamics was devised in 1924 by Rudolf Steiner and pre-dates the organic movement by about twenty years. But what is biodynamics? It is a science of the life forces at work in nature. Scientists have noted that there seem to be two primary forces, or fields. These are gravity, which is the force that forms the physical world, and life. Both stream through the universe, neither can be seen directly, but can be seen through their effects. With biodynamics we try to become more aware of the effect of this life field, or life force. The plant realm is very sensitive to the rhythmic flux in the life force, as the earth and moon spin and orbit the sun and the constellations and planets process across the sky.

What are the differences between organic and biodynamic? Both have a lot in common: composting, no use of chemicals, crop rotation and the use of green manure… but biodynamics goes further. It

biodynamic garden

maximises the positive effects of the life forces by applying biodynamic preparations to the soil, plants and compost and by cultivating using the rhythms of the moon and planets. There is a great deal of scientific research upon which biodynamic methods are based.

You may remember we mentioned on the farm page in February, that we were visited by Peter Proctor. Peter is the biodynamic guru from New Zealand who has devoted his life to biodynamics, and is currently helping to make huge progress using biodynamic methods with Indian farmers. In India, the introduction of modern and GM seeds have sealed the fate for some of the poorest farmers in the world. Modern seeds, bred by the multinationals cannot be harvested year after year by the farmer. Instead they must buy new seed every year - an expense they cannot afford.

With this impulse around us, we really felt that the time was right to try to heighten public awareness of biodynamics.

At a meeting with Bob Sherman, Director of Gardens and Gardening at Garden Organic, we decided to create a biodynamic garden at Ryton and film its creation and the training in biodynamics of the Garden Organic gardeners.

Andy Jones was asked to create the design. Andy designed the award winning Biodynamic Garden for the Hampton Court Show in 2004. Andy’s design for this Biodynamic Garden Project shows the plant groupings and the importance of the sun, moon and the planets in biodynamics.

Working with Andy in 2004 was Liz Ellis, now a trustee of the Biodynamic Agricultural Association (BDAA). Liz is producing the filming of the Biodynamic Garden Project at Garden Organic.

Please read on to discover more about Garden Organic, in an interview with Bob Sherman, the importance of filming the work from Liz Ellis, and more about Elysia’s role in this project in an interview with Sebastian Parsons, Elysia CEO.

Talking to Bob Sherman, Director of Gardens and Gardening at Garden OrganicBob joined Garden Organic

(HDRA as it then was) in 1986 as a gardener, and has gardened for thirty years. Biodynamic gardening will be a new experience for Bob and his team, and he is looking forward to experiencing its efficiency first hand in the coming years!

Tells us about Garden Organic...

Garden Organic is the national charity for organic growing; it was founded as the Henry Doubleday Research Association by Lawrence D Hills in 1954 and registered as a charity in 1958. That makes us 50 years old as a charity next year – a cause for celebration!

What is its aim and purpose; what has it achieved and what does it hope to achieve? We aim to encourage and enable everyone to garden organically through our research and through

Page 16: Dr.Hauschka Skin Summer 2007

demonstration. From very small beginnings in Bocking, near Braintree in Essex, we now have three gardens open to the public (see page 71 for more details), the Heritage Seed Library, our much acclaimed programme for conserving and making available rare and endangered vegetable varieties, national and international research programmes and a thriving education programme now reaching nearly 3,500 schools. Our membership is growing and we now have close to 41,000 individual members, with 11,000 separately supporting the Heritage Seed Library.

There is great concern today for the health of our planet and its ability to support life, something presaged by both Rudolf Steiner and Lawrence D Hills in their times and derided by the majority then. We aim to provide people now and in the future with practical solutions, through advice and demonstration, to help them heal the planet by gardening as organically as they can. Organic gardening embraces sustainability and environmental conservation.

Why develop a biodynamic garden?

When we first developed the site at Ryton back in 1985, we wanted one of the displays to be a biodynamic garden, to show another organic way of relating to the earth. Unfortunately at that time we could not find the funds to do it. We now have the opportunity to realise that dream, thanks to Elysia.

There are several reasons for us to be excited by this new venture, not least of them being the highly creative and symbolic design ideas that make this garden truly special; it’s such a stimulating space.

I am not a biodynamic expert but I find the principles behind the philosophy inspiring; they remind me of why I started to garden in the first place and why being organic was so important to me. We also like the challenge of explaining some quite difficult and, let’s be honest, odd practices to visitors, who may have only the vaguest notion, or none, of what it all means.

One important factor is, in my view, the desire to challenge people with different ideas, make them talk,

biodynamic garden

Page 17: Dr.Hauschka Skin Summer 2007

provoke discussion, move the boundaries – but always with real living examples rather than just words.

Who is there working on the garden now?

Nicole Weber is our Elysia student this year and does most of the work on the garden. She works under the supervision of Head Gardener, Katie Tippens, and is part of our team of 8 gardeners.

If we come to visit who would we meet and be able to talk to about biodynamics?

Nicole will be happy to talk to visitors but please remember that she has gardening to do as well and won’t want to miss the appropriate moment for the job in hand; these can be fairly precise in the biodynamic calendar! Both Katie and her deputy, Bill Warrell, have learnt some of the practices and can explain the basic ideas. We will have leaflets available and plan to stock some of the best books on biodynamic gardening in the shop. For expert advice we would recommend that gardeners contact the Biodynamic Agricultural Association (BDAA).

Talking to Sebastian Parsons, Elysia CEO Why is Elysia working with Garden Organic?

Elysia’s overarching mission is to “meet the needs of people with

resonance and connectedness”. Now the needs of people can not be met unless there is a healthy sustaining and sustainable environment for us to live in. However, Elysia is a trading organisation, and we specifically try to meet people’s needs by supplying them with sustaining and sustainable products. We know that biodynamic farming and gardening is a very sustaining and sustainable way forward, and it is at the heart of our own production standards. We also believe that the most powerful impulse for change in the world is consumer power. Our direct aim is, therefore, to sell biodynamically produced goods, but our indirect aim is to promote consciousness of biodynamics. The more it is demanded by consumers, the more producers of food, clothing and health care

products will turn to it. We see Garden Organic as a fabulous way of explaining about biodynamics to more people. We have known Garden Organic for many years and feel a deep connection with them, through the very great deal that we share in each others’ organisational purposes.

Why is Elysia sponsoring a biodynamic garden?

This is not an economic activity for us. We are sponsoring the garden as part of our contribution to society. We consider biodynamics to be of vital importance to the world and we are taking every opportunity we are given to help bring it to people’s attention.

What is a biodynamic garden to you?

Biodynamics is about vibrant life; for me, a biodynamic garden is about just that. Being in the midst of vibrant life is energising and uplifting. Although there are tremendous benefits to biodynamics at all levels, in terms of my own garden, it’s all about quality of life.

Why would someone want to visit the garden and what will they see?

Inspiration, education, renewal! This is a wonderful garden, a visual spectacular. Garden Organic is a great place to visit anyway and, with the beautiful biodynamic garden, it has in my view, taken a leap forward. The garden shows all aspects of plant life, vegetables, fruit, flowers, plus wonderful sculpture and garden design. There is information about biodynamic growing so that you can get going yourself. What is there to see? A feast for the eyes, and for the soul!

Talking to Liz EllisWhy did you become involved with biodynamics?

I discovered biodynamics when I picked up a book called Secrets of the Soil. I joined the Biodynamic

Agricultural Association, bought a copy of Maria Thun’s planting calendar and the horn manure preparation and started stirring. I did my own experiment and planted some radish seeds in my garden on the appropriate day – a root day – and some on a leaf day. The radishes planted on the root day germinated more quickly and in higher numbers than the others and I was hooked! I discovered that not many people had heard of biodynamics and I wanted to share this wonderful way of growing plants. Together with a group of people including Andy Jones, designer of the Biodynamic Garden at Garden Organic, we created The Biodynamic Garden at Hampton Court Flower Show in 2004. Elysia were one of the main sponsors. As a result of this garden I was invited to become a trustee of the BDAA.

Why were you keen to work on this project?

After the success of the garden at Hampton Court, Sebastian Parsons and I discussed making a documentary about biodynamics. A few weeks later he phoned me to say that Elysia was involved with the creation of a biodynamic garden at Garden Organic and he suggested that this would make a wonderful basis for the film. I agreed enthusiastically.

What are you hoping this garden and film will achieve?

I hope this garden and film will introduce even more people to biodynamics. We have a real opportunity to show not only how easy and effective it is to garden biodynamically but also, how using biodynamic methods and preparations can heal the soil. The earth has been suffering for so long from over use of chemicals and biodynamics can help it recover its lost vitality.

The garden can be seen as an organism, in much the same way as a biodynamic farm is, with the individual elements of the garden forming a whole through the planting themes and artworks.

An oak sculpture invites you in, to be met by a large vortex pebble mosaic - the creation of a water vortex is essential when stirring biodynamic preparations. Raised beds are planted to emphasise either flower, fruit, leaf or root.

We want you to visit this garden at Garden Organic, but we also need you to own a part of the Elysia Biodynamic Garden’s creation. This is such a tremendous opportunity to present biodynamics in an understandable and do-able way, and we really hope you feel as excited by the project as we are and will be able to help us.

All donations will only be spent on the actual garden. Any size of donations, large or small, is of great help and thankfully received. And with gift aid, every £1 you give is worth £1.28! So please support us with a donation today. Details of how to donate are available on page 71.

The garden design

A stainless steel framework designed around the lotus flower, a symbol of purity and wholeness, encircles the elevated section of the garden. Stained glass discs are fixed within it, representing the seven major celestial influences upon our earth: the Sun, Moon, Venus, Mercury, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. A central island represents the Earth, its centre point suggesting our position within the Cosmos. This is encircled by individual pebble mosaics showing the phases of the

Moon, our closest companion, whose subtle effects influence so many of the Earth’s life processes.

The Flowform water feature reminds us of the importance of rhythm. It is the combination of rhythm and vortical flow that has been utilised to make biodynamic preparations to support the soil and plants. Leaf shaped oak benches provide a resting place to ponder while immersed in the sounds, sights and scents of the garden.

It’s summer and summer is filled with light

Many of us love to go outside on the sun-kissed days of summer and soak up the warmth. A bright sunny day gives us a lift; we all know how it feels

when the sun comes out after a prolonged overcast spell. The sun has long been revered for providing warmth and light. Many of our biological processes are finely tuned to the cycle of day and night; we need daylight to remain healthy. When we expose our skin to sunlight we can generate over seventy percent of our bodily requirement for vitamin D. A lack of this important vitamin, often called the sunshine vitamin, is implicated in many illnesses. Therefore, spending some time outside in daylight is important, especially for anyone following a poor diet. Vitamin D is essential for the body to absorb calcium and phosphorus, which are vital for our bones and teeth. However, before they can be assimilated they undergo biochemical modification in the liver, and then the kidneys. As we age this capability can diminish; therefore, older people may need more daylight to stay healthy. The lack of light in the darker days of autumn and winter also causes the condition known as Seasonal Affective Syndrome (SAD), whereby daylight deficiency directly affects specific hormone production.

Fortunately, we don’t need to tan or burn to get the sunlight exposure our body needs; it is estimated that about 10-15 minutes safe exposure, three or four times a week, is all that’s required. But, in summer, remember to avoid the hottest part of the day.

We need daylight, but repeated overexposure to strong sunlight with consequent sunburn, and the cumulative affect, is undoubtedly bad for us and for our skin. It is known to cause the skin to age prematurely, breaking down collagen and elastin.

There is also evidence that it can suppress the immune system, cause DNA mutation and cellular damage, leading to serious skin cancers and other conditions.

However, individual tolerance to the sun’s Ultra Violet Radiation (UVR) depends on a number of factors. Our skin and hair colouring are good indicators of our individual tolerance or intolerance. If you have red or light coloured hair, with freckled or pale skin you will need to take the most care. It is very unlikely that your skin will tan easily, but it will burn easily. On the other hand, if your skin is brown and you have dark hair, you will be better protected naturally; your skin will tan deeply and not burn easily. People with other skin and hair colouring will have susceptibility to tanning or burning within these two extremes.

The skin’s natural reaction to strong sunlight is to produce a tanning pigment, melanin, which is produced by specialised melanocyte cells in the epidermis. While melanin tans the skin, this will not stop the skin from burning if sunbathing is overdone. Too much sun exposure reddens and burns the skin, which is skin damage. The lighter the skin the worse the affect.

Skin damage is caused by overexposure to UVR in the UVA and UVB wavelengths. Ultraviolet light is an invisible part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Invisible, that is, to humans, but not to bumblebees, butterflies and some other insects. However, the effects become visible when the skin is damaged by sunburn. But some damage goes deeper and may not be evident at the time. UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the dermis of the skin. They are the main stimulus for the production of melanin, which tans the skin. Although they are not the main cause of direct sunburn, in excess they can be harmful, as they can suppress the immune system, causing

premature ageing of the skin. They can, for example, pass through cloud cover and glass at any time of the year. Many of the UVB rays are filtered out by the atmosphere’s ozone layer, but this is thinning in certain areas of the world. They do not penetrate the skin so far, but they are the primary cause of sunburn. They cause tissue damage, which results in wrinkling and ageing of the skin. Cumulative overexposure to both forms of UVR is implicated in the development of skin cancer and other skin diseases.

The power of the sun’s rays varies a great deal throughout the year, from one geographical location to another. The sun’s intensity also depends on the time of day, and around midday it is at its strongest. The length of time you expose your skin to the sun, the condition of your skin, the protective clothes you wear, and sunscreen precautions you take during exposure are also important factors in how you cope. You should also bear in mind that the sun’s intensity can be magnified and reflected by sand, snow, and other bright surfaces, so you may still be vulnerable to burning, even when in the shade.

In recent decades changing lifestyles with access to cheaper airfares and holidays, entice many people to take more holidays abroad in hotter countries and sunbathe in more intense conditions. More time is spent on the beach wearing fewer clothes, which increases the risk of sunburn and skin damage. However, skin damage is not just a problem in hot countries. The ozone layer in the upper atmosphere, which filters out some of the sun’s rays, is now thinner. Every year, over 60,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer in the UK, and this is increasing. Of course, this may be due, in part, to sun over-exposure while on holiday abroad. Therefore, wherever you’re located, it’s vital to take sensible protection against sunburn.

You can protect yourself from the worst effects of UVR by staying out of the sun when it is at its strongest, by wearing protective clothing, and by using sunscreen protection. Younger children under six should not sunbathe. When they are out in the sun they require full, effective protection as their skin

is more tender and therefore, more susceptible to damage. Research reveals that predisposition to more serious skin conditions can, in part, be due to skin damage when young.

There are different types of sunscreens. Those containing chemical filters protect the skin by absorbing UVB rays, but some offer little protection against UVA rays. Broad-spectrum chemical sunscreens give protection against both UVA and UVB rays. A chemical sunscreen needs to be applied at least twenty minutes before sun exposure to provide protection. The UV energy absorbed by the chemicals gradually breaks them down, and for this reason, the sunscreens have to be regularly reapplied to maintain protection. Some of the chemicals contained in these products may also induce skin sensitivities and other allergic reactions.

Physical sunscreens contain inert mineral pigments, such as coated titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which prevent burning mainly by reflecting the sun’s rays away from the skin. Sunscreens with mineral pigments provide immediate protection upon application.

All sunscreens are offered with various Sun Protection Factors (SPF) to meet the differing individual requirements: skin colouring, the intensity of the sun’s rays and the anticipated length of time to be spent in the sun. The SPF Index is based on laboratory research. It provides an indication of the protection, for the specific SPF numbered product, against UVB rays, which are the main cause of sunburn. The relationship between the increase in the SPF number and the amount of UV rays filtered is not linear. For example, SPF15 will filter about 93%, and SPF30 about 96%. To determine the SPF category that meets your requirement, you need to take into account the above mentioned aspects and how long it takes for your skin to feel slightly uncomfortable in the sun, without any skin protection. If, for example, this happens after ten minutes and you choose an SPF15 sunscreen, the maximum length of time you should stay in the sun will be: 10 x 15 (minutes) = 150 minutes or 2½ hours. Therefore, the higher the SPF number, the longer you can

sun care

stay in the sun without re-applying the product. You should understand that no sunscreen offers 100% protection against prolonged sun exposure; therefore, you should always be prudent when out in strong sunlight.

Sunscreens should be used correctly to work optimally. It is vital to spread the sunscreen evenly and not too thinly to optimise protection. Particular attention should be given to sensitive areas like the nose, ears, lips, back of the neck, and insides of the arms and legs. If you are male and balding don’t forget to protect the top of your head, particularly if the sun is high overhead. If you go swimming or sweat profusely, or if the sunscreen is rubbed off by your clothes, you will need to re-apply it to maintain protection. Make sure that if you do need to re-apply, that you do so before the time you have calculated for your selected SPF product has elapsed. Once your skin has reddened you should come out of the sun for it to recover. Applying further sunscreen will not overcome the problem at this stage.

A sunscreen is not a substitute for a sensible approach to sunbathing. It is vital to remember that sunscreens may give a false sense of security, as it is so easy to spend more time out in the sun than you have calculated when selecting your SPF, in the belief that you are completely protected. Often the full effect of sunburn is only evident later, when you come out of the sun. The cumulative affect of repeated sunburn can lead to more serious conditions.

And don’t forget it is advisable to stay in the shade when the sun’s strength is most intense, to avoid skin damage. If you’re out in strong sunshine for long periods wear protective clothing. This means a wide-brimmed hat and clothes which protect your arms and legs. Tightly woven materials in darker colours offer greater protection from UV rays, whereas lighter coloured or wet clothes allow them to pass through the material more freely. You should still use a sunscreen on uncovered areas of the skin. Good quality sunglasses will fully protect your eyes against UVA and UVB rays.

Playing safe in the sunOur guide to protecting children’s skin

in the sun, naturally

Page 25: Dr.Hauschka Skin Summer 2007

For children, summer always seems to last forever. The longest, hottest days of the year offer endless opportunities for fun, with picnics in the countryside and teddy bear tea parties in the back garden, playing in paddling pools and darting through sprinklers, building the best sandcastles and finding the prettiest shells on the beach… not surprisingly, many of our happiest childhood memories are often summer ones. Yet, while the youngest members of the family are outdoors enjoying the sunshine, you want to be sure that their delicate skin is fully protected against the harmful effects of the sun.

‘Sunlight is wonderfully uplifting and essential for Vitamin D production, which helps the body absorb calcium, promoting strong, healthy bones and teeth,’ says Elizabeth King, principal of the Dr.Hauschka Training School. ‘However, unprotected exposure can easily lead to sun damage. Children’s skin is naturally extra sensitive,

so it’s essential that it is effectively protected against both UVA and UVB rays.’

Research shows that most sun damage occurs during childhood and adolescence. This, coupled with concern about the ozone layer, means that protecting children’s vulnerable skin in the sun - and getting them into good suncare habits for later life – has never been more important. New EU guidelines specify that a protective cream with an SPF higher than 25 should be used on babies and children. With this in mind, Dr.Hauschka has extended its much-loved holistic sun care range to include the indispensable new Dr.Hauschka Sunscreen Cream SPF30 for Children. Completely natural and deliciously scented, this waterproof formula is quickly absorbed – vital when there’s so much to do and not a moment to waste – and expertly formulated to protect and pamper sensitive young skin. It’s what your smallest fun-in-the-sun seekers have been waiting for.

As with the entire Dr.Hauschka Sun Care Range, the new Sunscreen Cream SPF30 for Children provides exceptionally effective protection against UVA and UVB rays, whilst nurturing the skin with a combination of carefully chosen, all-natural extracts and plant essences. ‘We believe that children should always use sun care products formulated with good quality, natural ingredients, as chemical ingredients can sometimes irritate their sensitive skin,’ explains Elizabeth King. ‘Dr.Hauschka’s Sunscreen Cream SPF30 for Children contains the mineral Titanium Dioxide, which acts as a non-toxic, natural sun reflector and does not irritate or penetrate the skin. The fine mineral pigments form an invisible shield on the skin, instantly deflecting harmful UVA and UVB rays. Being a physical sunblock, it also has the advantage of providing immediate protection – synthetic preparations need to be applied twenty minutes before sun exposure to guarantee protection - making the cream ideal for children.’

Choosing a natural sunscreen to shield young delicate skin from the sun has additional benefits. ‘Unlike synthetic ingredients, which quickly lose their efficacy, mineral sunscreens have a much longer shelf life without the need for strong preservatives,’ adds Elizabeth. ‘The ultra-fine pigments in Dr.Hauschka’s Sunscreen Cream SPF30 for Children, produced by micronisation, enable a thin layer of sunscreen to protect the skin effectively.’

As well as providing reliable, chemical-free sunscreen protection, Dr.Hauschka’s Sunscreen Cream SPF30 for Children contains a cocktail of natural skin soothers and nourishers. Along with precious Macadamia nut oil, Quince seed and Avocado oil, Ice Plant extract naturally helps to prevent children’s skin from becoming parched when the heat is on. ‘The Ice Plant retains a plentiful supply of moisture even in the hottest sunshine,’ says Elizabeth. ‘Together, these natural ingredients effectively care for and stabilise sun-stressed skin.’

The natural choice

Page 26: Dr.Hauschka Skin Summer 2007

For smooth, effective application, shake your sunscreen before use and then apply it evenly, all over the face and body. ‘Ensure that the skin is completely covered,’ says Elizabeth. In the case of babies and toddlers, check that easily-forgetten areas – such as their hands, feet and ears - are covered, too. Singing a favourite nursery rhyme or song while you’re putting on sunscreen will help to make it more fun.

Although Dr.Hauschka’s Sunscreen Cream SPF30 for Children is waterproof, it should be re-applied regularly, especially after swimming or a sporting activity.

All sunscreens need to be applied evenly and thoroughly in order to provide full protection, but with children this can be easier said than done. To make things easier, Dr.Hauschka’s Sunscreen Cream SPF30 for Children is less time-

consuming to apply than a runny lotion – especially tricky with a wriggly toddler or impatient sandcastle builder - and will be completely absorbed before you can say “anyone for softball?” As the cream is white when it is applied, you can easily keep track of areas that you’ve covered and any that you’ve missed. The yummily summery (all-natural) smell will provide further encouragement.

‘All skin that’s exposed to the sun should be clearly covered,’ advises Elizabeth King. ‘In a natural sunscreen, the higher the SPF, the more minerals are contained, so with Dr.Hauschka’s Sunscreen Cream SPF30 for Children it’s really easy to see what you’re doing because the skin looks paler where the cream has been used. Also, as the sunscreen is effective immediately, there’s no waiting around.’

Application made easy

The convenient flip-top tube means less mess and no more losing the lid in the sand…

Get children into the habit of applying their own sunscreen as early as possible. With younger children, try playing a game of ‘join the dots’ with the cream – simply dot it all over their skin and get them to ‘connect’ the dots by rubbing it in. You could even reward them with a sticker each time they do it. Most importantly, involve them in the process as much as possible, by letting them hold the tube and put some on you, too!

Encourage children to seek shade during the hottest times of the day (between 11am and 3pm).

Soothe and replenish children’s sensitive skin after sun exposure with an all-natural, soothing after-sun. Dr.Hauschka’s After-Sun Lotion instantly cools hot and bothered little bodies and restores essential moisture with moisturising Quince seed and Anthyllis extract. If the skin does redden, swirl a little of Dr.Hauschka’s Rose Body Oil into the water at bath time and follow with the After-Sun Lotion.

Overcast days can be deceptive - UV rays still penetrate clouds and pollution. Similarly, on cooler days and when there’s a breeze – such as on the beach – children may not be aware they are developing sunburn. Keep their skin protected and nurtured at all times with Dr.Hauschka’s Sunscreen Cream SPF 30 for Children.

If there is sunburn, a superb after-sun soother is Dr.Hauschka Rhythmic Conditioner Sensitive. Pat a couple of ampoules very gently on to the sunburn. Then apply a thick coat of Dr.Hauschka Rose Day Cream. Repeat throughout the day or evening as required.

Help your children make the most of the sunshine – in safety – with these hot tips.

The golden rules

Avoid long periods of exposure to the sun, which can make children of all ages feel tired and irritable. If you’re going out for the day, take some shade with you – pack a pop-up play tent or giant parasol.

Keep babies under the age of one year out of direct sunlight, fully clothed and wearing a sunhat with a wide brim (ideally one with a ‘back flap’ that covers the nape of the neck too). As it contains no chemical ingredients, Dr.Hauschka’s Sunscreen Cream SPF30 for Children is gentle enough to be used from birth.

When they’re playing outside in the sun, ensure children are covered up as much as possible in long-sleeved t-shirts, which will also provide added protection against UV rays when worn in water, and trousers or longer-length shorts. Wide-brimmed hats (and those with a ‘back flap’) are ideal.

When children are getting in and out of the pool, jumping waves or body-boarding, you want to be confident their sun protection won’t do a disappearing act with the next wave. Dr.Hauschka’s Sunscreen Cream SPF30 for Children is waterproof but, like all suncare products, it should be re-applied regularly and especially after swimming or exercising (following an energetic game of Swingball on the sand, for example).

For babies and toddlers, ensure their buggy provides adequate shade with a hood or clip-on parasol.

If possible, keep a tube of Dr.Hauschka’s Sunscreen Cream SPF30 for Children in your child’s school bag during the summer months (it’s a sport’s day essential, when children often spend extended periods in full sunlight). The cream is white when it is applied, making it easy for children to see where they are putting it themselves.

product focus

Due to their precious natural ingredients, Dr.Hauschka’s mineral sun care products reliably protect your skin when exposed to the sun.

The Dr.Hauschka sunscreens also respect the integrity of the skin. They provide moisturising care and immediate protection, by incorporating specific natural plant ingredients and a mineral pigment within the individual formulations. Ingredients like Shea Butter, Sweet Almond, Jojoba and Avocado oils form the nurturing basis for the lotions and creams. Quince Seed and Ice Plant extracts help preserve moisture, while Horse Chestnut and Sea Buckthorn

extracts soothe the skin. The protection is achieved by incorporating Titanium Dioxide mineral pigments into the preparations. Titanium Dioxide is the second most refractive mineral after diamond. When a Dr.Hauschka sunscreen is applied, this inert mineral substance stays on the skin’s surface creating an invisible shield of protection against sunburn and skin damage, working immediately to reflect the sun’s rays.

Whether for children or adults, fair skin or tanned, the Dr.Hauschka Sun Care Rangehas the ideal solution for everyone; fromSPF8 to 30, in lotion, cream and stick form.

Dr.Hauschka and you

Jo and Ann ” We both started to use Dr.Hauschka products almost three years ago. The condition of my skin improved so quickly that I couldn’t help but tell everyone about how wonderful the range is - and my clear, glowing skin was the evidence! Mum was so impressed that she put in her first order only a few weeks later and she is regularly complimented on her lovely, soft complexion.

Mum always keeps a tube of Hand Cream next to the sink and in her handbag. She had to use an alternative brand recently and she commented on just how quickly Dr.Hauschka’s Hand Cream is absorbed by her skin in comparison. She really saw the difference.

I’m not sure it’s possible to pick my favourite products as they’re all so yummy! My gym bag is packed with products and I find massaging in Birch-Arnica Body Oil after a work-out wonderfully soothing as it relaxes my tired, aching muscles.

I used to suffer terribly with prickly heat when I exposed my skin to the sun and for years, nothing ever seemed to help. I had my first holiday without experiencing any kind of reaction when I began to use Dr.Hauschka sun care products. I also love using them as they smell gorgeous and I completely trust that I’m not going to burn when I’m exposed to the sun, no matter how hot it is.

As for the treatments, well, they’re just to die for! I make sure I get one as often as possible as they give me a proper time-out from my hectic schedule. It’s amazing, but time really does appear to stand still for those two hours - I literally float out of the treatment room once my Esthetician has worked her magic.“

A 10-day intensive home care treatment for dry, tired looking hands:

Finish with an application of Dr.Hauschka Hand Cream.

Repeat daily until the 10 ampoules are used up.

4

Apply half an ampoule of Dr.Hauschka Rhythmic night Conditioner on each hand. This can be applied using gentle pressing movements until all the fluid has been absorbed by the skin.

The Rhythmic night Conditioner is an effective regenerative treatment that works wonders to help restore elasticity, as well as increasing the skin’s own oil and moisture levels. (The travel pack of 10 ampoules is ideal for this hand treatment.)

3Gently cleanse the top of your hands, using press and roll movements, with Dr.Hauschka Cleansing Cream mixed with a little water. The suction created by the movement, together with the Almond meal, will gently lift and remove dead skin cells that may have accumulated on the skin’s surface.

2

First dampen your hands with warm water.1

Condition your cuticles twice daily and use a good hand cream throughout the day.

The Dr.Hauschka neem nail Oil Pen is ideal to start off your day, as it is quick and easy to use and can be carried in your handbag.

For a more nourishing overnight feed use one squirt of the neem nail Oil and with circular movements gently massage the entire nail bed. This will not only treat the cuticle, but also strengthen weak or brittle nails. Apply a generous application of Dr.Hauschka Hand Cream to your hands.

tips:• Avoid cutting your cuticles; this causes

irregular and thickened re-growth. It is best

just to gently push cuticles back with the disposable tips supplied with the neem

nail Oil Pen.

• Before pushing back your cuticles gently soak your nails in a bowl of warm water containing a capful of Dr.Hauschka Sage Bath.

• To avoid splitting nails, don’t use nail clippers and always file your nails in one direction only.

• Be selective in your choice of emery boards. We recommend glass files.

• Always use acetone-free nail varnish remover. It is vital that you don’t strip the nail of its own natural oils.

Allow ample time between applying your moisturiser and make-up - you don’t want your make-up to have run off your face before you’ve even made it to the photographs!

Pay attention to your eyebrows, have them plucked and ready for your big day. The day before is ideal with just a quick tidy up on the day to avoid redness. If they are naturally pale, add definition with an eyeshadow and brush or pencil a couple of shades lighter than your eyebrow hair.

You may have a few sleepless nights before your wedding day so make sure you use the right type of concealer: a liquid-based concealer is best for covering dark circles under your eyes, whereas a thicker formula should be used to cover any spots or blemishes.

With your foundation, remember that it needs to look seamless through your face, neck and chest. Try a tinted moisturiser if you prefer light make-up.

If your foundation has evened out your skin tone, add warmth and a healthy glow with Rouge Powder or Bronzing Powder. Highlight the apples of your cheeks. Finish with a dusting of Translucent Face Powder to your face and neck.

With help from your bridesmaid, apply a little Translucent Bronze Concentrate to your chest for that sun-kissed glow. Application should be just beneath your collar bones and an inch or two above the edges of your dress (keep it clear of your dress as it can stain).

The Dr.Hauschka Body Treatment is a holistic body massage like no other. Working with our lymphatic system to open the body to its own life forces, this treatment can work on many levels; as simple relaxation, to help aching muscles, to stimulate poor circulation and to boost sluggish lymph conditions. The Treatment starts with a warm Sage foot bath during which you and your Esthetician discuss your needs. Once your feet are

dried, you then move to the couch. Using gentle, but deeply working movements, this whole body massage includes your back, legs, stomach, chest and shoulders. Rhythm comes into the massage in many ways, which you can feel in the movements of your Esthetician’s hands, and your slowed rhythmical breathing. By correcting the balance and harmony of the body’s rhythms and forces, good health is better maintained.

Wedding favours are said to date back centuries when a wedding was considered lucky. The bride and groom shared this good luck with their guests with a treat, which consisted of 5 Almonds symbolising health, wealth, happiness, longevity and fertility. Today they are used as a thank you.

Why not give your guests a thank you that they will thank you for! We suggest Hand Cream for the boys and Rose Body Moisturiser for the girls.

Jan”I have used the face and body products in the Dr.Hauschka range for over ten years now, and I love them! So, last year when I got married, I wanted to use the make-up too! As a concert pianist I am used to dressing up for an occasion, but I like to keep my make-up to a minimum. However, my dress was so stunning that it gave me an opportunity to really enjoy the colours that Dr.Hauschka creates. I was very lucky to have the assistance of one of Alexsandra Byrne’s colleagues, and she did the most perfect make-up for me. My make-up lasted all day long, complimented my dress perfectly, and not once did I feel ‘made up’, I just felt like me!“

Quince fruit has long been a symbol of love, happiness and fertility; “Quince for the newly married pair, brings love and joy and children fair.”

The Quince is something of a stranger to the modern garden, although it has been around for centuries. Its pink-white blossom is breathtakingly beautiful, but the chalice-forming petals don’t dwell for long. And just like the sun in late autumn, when the handsome pear or apple-shaped fruits ripen, Quince fruit can glow yellow-gold.

Depending on the variety and the climate, Quince fruit can also be coloured lime-green or almost orange, and be covered in fine downy hairs that can be easily rubbed off, releasing the fruit’s distinctive aroma.

Delightfully fragrant, a single fruit is enough to perfume a room, and in the past they were often used to freshen just such a space.

The fruit with its thickened and waxy skin, knows just how to protect itself, and the pulp inside which contains a multitude of gritty seeds, is coated in a gel-like substance known as mucilage.

If you bit into the pulp of a fruit grown in cooler climes like Britain, you’d wince as it is firm and astringent, but store for a few weeks and it will soften and the harshness decrease. Still, few will eat a Quince raw, except in the warmer countries where it naturally softens and sweetens under the hot sun. Normally, the

fruit is cooked and sweetened before eating, which reveals its appetising flavour.

The mucilaginous and waxy properties of the Quince fruit provide excellent ingredients for medicines and natural skin care.

Medicinally, Quince mucilage helps relieve irritation. That is why it is used in gargles for sore throats, as an ingredient in cough remedies and for treating gastric or intestinal catarrh.

And just as the wax coating keeps the fruit fresh for weeks, the sweetly fragrant wax contained in Dr.Hauschka Quince Day Cream and the Kajal Eyeliners protects the skin and yet allows it to breathe. Quince seed extract, obtained from the coating around the seeds, is highly skin compatible. It regulates moisture content, has anti-inflammatory properties and soothes the skin. This extract is used in Dr.Hauschka Quince Day Cream, Rejuvenating Mask, Moisturising Mask, Quince Body Moisturiser, Rose Body Moisturiser, Toned Day Cream and the sun care preparations.

Quince used in the Dr.Hauschka products is biodynamically cultivated.

Borage is a beautiful blue flower with a light, refreshing cucumber flavour, Calendula has a

peppery flavour. Nasturtium (not shown) also has a wonderful peppery flavour and is great for salads.

Dill flower heads and chive flowers addcolour and structure. Rose petal elixir and jam

Our first lambing went very well. We now have over 50 healthy lambs who are growing larger by the day. The wet and warm weather has meant that the grass has grown vigorously and there will be a good hay crop this year, should the rain stop for long enough to allow us to harvest! Our cattle also arrived and have settled in well.

Farm watch

Traditional HerefordsWe decided to choose a cattle breed that was ‘native’ and, given where we live, Herefords were the natural choice. Ours are traditional English Herefords which means that they, unlike their cousins which are found all over the world, have much shorter legs and are more compact in build. We decided against buying in a complete herd but to start with a mix of ages and sexes. Our four young heifers and registered bull calf will mature by autumn 2008, while the three older animals are all in calf with a delivery due this autumn. This will be our next really big challenge!Although both cattle and sheep eat grass, they prefer the grass at quite different lengths and so ideally sheep follow cattle in the grazing cycle. This is good for the grass, as it is well nibbled down, and also healthier for the animals.

farm

Nursery schoolThe lambs have been hugely entertaining. Once they were a few weeks old they formed into large groups and raced up and down the field. They also regularly jump up and down on their mothers’ backs, who appear to bear this with amazing stoicism!

Cow ParsleyThe Cow Parsley is beautiful along the field edges and is interspersed with Red Campion.Cow Parsley is a member of the Carrot family and very similar to Hemlock, which is poisionous to both people and animals. Hemlock was found in several of our fields and had to be cut down before it flowered to ensure that it won’t be included in our hay and won’t return next year. One of the names that Cow Parsley is known by is Queen Anne’s Lace, perhaps due to its delicate white flowers. It is also very attractive to insects.

garden

Summer gardenKeeping your garden looking good!

The summer is here and the garden is looking great...or is it?

• Do you have dull corners now where earlier there was an abundance of colour? If you have early flowering shrubs like Forsythia or Camellia’s, try growing Sweet Peas or Morning Glory over the now flowerless foliage. For a more permanent solution, plant a summer flowering Clematis near the base of such shrubs and enjoy a second burst of colour!

• Do your Roses look lacklustre after their first flush of flowers? Remove faded blooms before the fleshy ‘hips’ start to form (dead-heading). If you don’t, much of the plants energy will go into producing seeds instead of more flowers. Dead-heading should be done with secateurs; cut off the hip down to the next but one leaf. Keep feeding and watering your Roses too. Roses are hungry plants which produce lots of leafy growth and many flowers every season. If you have access to well rotted farmyard manure, mix this in a water butt and add some soluble plant food to make liquid manure. Apply liberally to your Roses during dry spells – your plants will be very grateful for the attention!

• Are weeds taking over your vegetable patch? After harvesting early season vegetables like Broad Beans or first early Potatoes, try sowing some quick ‘follow on crops’ such as Lettuce, Beetroot or Spinach, to stop the ground being colonised by weeds. This is a great way to keep your veg’ garden producing delicious fresh vegetables for your table throughout the summer months and beyond.

Flower Days: cut back, dead-head, pick flowers for the house; harvest Lettuce

Root Days: sow, hoe, weed and / or harvest Carrots and Beetroot

Leaf Days: sow, hoe and weed Spinach and Salad crops

Fruit Days: harvest Lettuce, Peas, Beans, Tomatoes, Courgettes, Cucumbers, all fruit crops

Q What is the best way to tackle shine? R. Potter, Email

A Shine is always the result of a cocktail of elements including your moisturiser, your skin condition and your foundation. First of all, consider your moisturiser. Perhaps where you are most shiny - often the forehead and chin - you could use a product that is not too rich or greasy; I would recommend Moisturising Day Cream for someone who has a normal / combination skin condition.

Second, consider the time between your moisturiser application and your make-up application. The longer you can leave the application of your make-up after applying your moisturiser, the less shine you are likely to experience - allow your skin to ‘drink’ the moisturiser in for as long as possible. This will also help stop your make-up ‘sliding off’ as the day progresses.

In terms of make-up, it is very easy to control the shine with a delicate application of Dr.Hauschka’s Translucent Face Powder. I recommend using a dab of it on your finger and gently tapping it in on the areas that are of concern. This will give you a more delicate, invisible look than using a powder puff or a big brush.

Q What do you advise as an effective and safe way to remove facial hair?Karen da Silva, Email

A Facial hair is a topic with which all people wrestle. Men search for years for their perfect shaving methods and struggle

with the to-change-or-not-to-change the mono-brow debate. Women usually have more localised areas of concern and try to strike a balance between hair removal methods and their resulting skin irritations.

If waxing feels too aggressive for your skin, and I am sure there are a fair number of us who have waxing stories (in fact, I usually call them beauty injuries), one solution for you would be to investigate some long term methods of hair removal, such as laser or electrolysis. The latter has a longer history and more proven results, but you may not be interested in permanently altering your hair follicles.

Another alternative is bleaching. Although many people use facial bleach and are quite happy with it, I find it interferes with make up application because over time the hair becomes coarse and seems to drink in the colour of foundation and other make-up. If you find waxing to be harsh, bleaching may not be any kinder to your skin!

Perhaps you might consider threading; it is a sort of a speed-tweezing method of hair removal. It is a Middle Eastern practise with a long history, wherein the practitioner holds one end of the cotton thread and then somehow creates a loop of thread to trap a series of unwanted hairs and pull them from the skin. No chemicals are applied to the skin at any time and although it takes slightly longer than waxing, it is generally considered less painful than tweezing. Like plucking, it lasts for two to four weeks and it usually isn’t particularly expensive to have done.

Q I am unsure when I should use Dr.Hauschka Cleansing Milk and when to use the Cleansing Cream. Do I really need both? Mrs Booth, Croydon

A The products are designed for different purposes and if you are a make-up wearer then you will need both.

The Cleansing Milk is a gentle and effective cleanser for dissolving and removing make-up. This preparation is also particularly suitable for the delicate skin around your eyes and for your lips.

You should use the Cleansing Milk at night to ensure that you remove all make-up before continuing your deep cleansing routine with the Cleansing Cream. If you do not use a foundation, but use a tinted moisturiser instead, you may find it sufficient to begin cleansing immediately with the Cleansing Cream.

Cleansing Cream is the main Dr.Hauschka facial cleansing preparation. It is designed to be used both morning and evening.

It is important to remember that the preparation and the method of using the Cleansing Cream are equally important. For you to get the most beneficial cleansing effect, firstly apply a warm face cloth or muslin to your face and neck for a few moments. This will moisten your skin and relax your pore walls so that deep pore cleansing can occur. Continue with the application of your Cleansing Cream with press and roll movements. This will create a suction which lifts the emulsion now laden with grime and dead skin cells. After rinsing off thoroughly, finish off with a cool compress. This will loosen any excess sebum that may have accumulated in the pore.

Cleansing Cream respects the skin’s own healthy functioning and, when used correctly, only removes skin cells ready to be removed avoiding any need for harsh exfoliators.

Both cleansing products will leave your skin feeling comfortable. Comfortable skin means that your skin has been thoroughly cleansed but your acid-mantle has not been disturbed.

Q My skin is dry and I’m concerned about ageing. I am not sure if I should use the Firming Mask or Moisturising Mask. Which one is most suitable? Mrs Greene, Edinburgh

A I recommend you use the Firming Mask, as it will address both of your concerns. This mask will deeply hydrate your skin, as well as improve its elasticity and tone. What makes this preparation so unique is that it contains four highly beneficial extracts from the Rose: Rose essential oil strengthens the skin; Rose petal extract, which is rich in tannins, helps improve its tone; the wonderfully fragrant Rose wax works to soothe and protect the skin; Rose distillate brings it all together by imbuing the remarkable harmonising and balancing properties of the Rose.

Begin by applying your mask daily, for 28 days, beneath your regular Dr.Hauschka day care preparation. Then continue to use it as a 20 minute mask once or twice a week. As an added bonus, this mask can also be applied around the eyes.

By contrast, Moisturising Mask can be used to provide immediate relief and a soothing blanket of protection if your skin is extremely dry and sensitive.

Ordering without being able to try on first can have its drawbacks. To help make life easier we've put together some key information which will help you to choose the right size, right style and right type of garment - whatever your shape and tastes.

General Washing CareAlways read and follow the instructions given

on the care label.

JerseywearAfter washing jersey items the fabric is likely

to tighten. This is due to its structure. Your item

will therefore need to be reshaped whilst damp

so that it dries in its correct size and shape. This

will also help it to dry without creases (making

ironing much easier!).

TowelsWash all towelling items before use. To avoid

colours running, wash light and dark coloured

towels separately. For best results, wash towels in

a 30°c wash. If washed at a higher temperature,

there is the possibility that they may shrink.

Bed LinenAll our bed linen is made from 100% cotton

fabric. For best results, wash the bed linen

before use and as the buttons are made from

Tagua Nuts we recommend that you wash your

bedding items on a gentle 30°c wash. If washed

at a higher temperature, there is the possibility

that your items may shrink. Our bed linen can

be tumble dried on a cool heat setting or line

dried for a fresh outdoor feeling.

Tagua nutsSome of our items use buttons made of Tagua

Nuts, otherwise known as 'vegetable ivory'.

Before the introduction of plastics, Tagua Nuts

were widely used for buttons. Tagua Nuts are

harvested from sustainable rainforest sources

and are an eco-friendly alternative to plastic.

BleachingPlease do note that if you use a washing

detergent that contains optical whiteners, your

Organic White garments will become whiter

when washed.

Elysia is now shopping heaven! After several years of planning and preparation, we are simply delighted that the first Elysia shop opened recently in notting Hill, London.

As the UK’s first official Dr.Hauschka shop, we have endeavoured to provide the best possible level of service for you – not only is the complete range of Dr.Hauschka products available in-store, but all our staff are long-standing fans of Dr.Hauschka. This means they have real experience of using the products and believe in them so much that they wanted to work at Elysia!

In addition to Dr.Hauschka, you can buy Liv, our beautiful organic and fair traded clothing and homeware range, Speick (pronounced Spike) Men’s Shaving Range, pure plant oil soaps, and we will also shortly be introducing Holle - biodynamically grown baby food. We look forward to seeing you!

Garden Organic has something for everyone. Gardeners and non-gardeners, families and individuals of all ages.

It has three sites. Ryton in Warwickshire is 10 acres and includes over 30 individually themed gardens, including the Elysia Biodynamic Garden. There is a large shop stocked with organic food, plants and garden sundries for the organic gardener, the Vegetable Kingdom display, a garden café and the multi-award-winning, top rated organic restaurant.

Audley End in Essex, is set in a beautiful Capability Brown landscape. There is a restored, working Victorian productive walled garden, complete with an early 19th century glasshouse and the only remaining Orchard House designed and built by the famous nurseryman Thomas Rivers.

Garden Organic Yalding in Kent, provides a historical trail through garden styles with a unique hop pole circular central pergola and its own wooden folly.

Visit one of the Garden Organic gardens and be inspired to try a single idea, or perhaps a complete regime change! Or come just to relax or wander quietly. All Garden Organic sites have their own character but all are tended with warmth and passion and have a definite ambience.
