• Small Ice; divide OZ in half.• 1-3-1 structure = vertical side. Spread structure = horizontal side.• Coach starts drill by passing a single puck to a PP player on their

respected side of the ice (1 - 3 -1 or Spread).• That unit moves puck around, trying to score. 2 Penalty Killers will

look to pressure/defend.• Play continues until a goal is scored or one of the 2 penalty killers

clears the puck to other side of ice.• The drill is continuous so once a puck is scored or cleared the other

• Centre acts as middle drive who is driving to the net on the rush.• D is the net front player who is trying to get them on their

inside shoulder and timing it to take the stick and body so the C can’t receive the pass from the coach.

• Don’t want the D to turn their back to the puck. They must know where the pass is coming from and where is the offensive player is.

• Drive hard under stick and maintain body position.• Do both sides.

• On the whistle, a player takes off from the opposite corners through the blue paint and gets a pass from the opposite line and will head straight down the wall to the far end.

• Player in the NZ will touch the boards with their stick and then angle the player that is getting the puck.

• Look to take ice and end the play using a good stick, angle and end the play by eliminating through the elbows.

• Opposite sides at the same time, stay on your side!

• Players switch roles for the next rep.

• D will use under stick vs F1 in circle using two hands and make a play back to the coach.

• Continue to skate towards F2 and play a 1v1.

• Have F2 move down towards the goaline, then back up the wall, then back down towards the goaline.

• D must have proper stick positioning (one hand) while closing taking passing lanes away.

• Adjust to two hands at the right time.• Push on the hips, under stick or saw

their arms off.• Take the puck then make a play to the

F1 who is in the middle of the rink.

• C will act as the F3 in the ozone. They can move anywhere from the tops of the circles down to the net trying to get open for a pass from the coach.

• D in front will have their stick on the ice (one hand or two hands) looking to know where the pass is coming from and maintaining positioning on F3.

• Try and have feet facing up the ice. Play 3-5 pucks.• Coach can move around with their positioning when passing it

to the F3.• When coach blows the whistle, the C will come and grab a

puck and move it low to high for a d shot. C has to get to the net.

• We want the D to box out that forward. Build wall and/or under stick. Maintain body position. Know when the puck is being delivered to the net. Time your lifting of the stick accordingly.

SURF’S UP 2 VS 2 / 3 VS 2 / 3 VS 3 29 • Coach starts with pucks in the middle. On the whistle

F1 and F2 take off touching the center circle as coach spots puck to the weak side for F1 to recoup. D’s also start on whistle sorting out their opponent and surfing up to close gaps, and defending skating forward.

• F1 races to get puck and Fwds attack 2v2 against the D.

• Some goals here are; Fwds quickly putting pucks on net and F2 splitting the D to get to the net. Coaches control where the attack will start from with their puck placement off whistle. Ds job is to bust the rush, maintain tight gaps, defend skating forwards where possible with good stick and angles. If the defence’s recoup puck, use glass or a D-to-D to get puck out.

• Coaches, you can also spot the puck to F2 for a center lane drive to start attack, you make the call.

• Add 3 F’s for 3v2 rush forcing weak side D to read off the rush. Add a back checker from the Fwd line to create a 3v3 with a B/C or 3v3. Option is spotting a 2nd puck on the whistle.

Page 16: DRILL E-BOOK

• Pucks in corners on same side of ice in each zone.• Drill starts with LD and RD on blueline in an offensive

mode.• On whistle F1 feeds either D, they pass D to D and

shoot. F1 and F2 charge to the net for a tip, screen, play out a rebound.

• On 2nd whistle F1 and F2 start an up ice attack off a pass from F3 while the two D come up inside the cones (to establish inside the dots position) putting both attackers and both defenders in the middle lane of the ice.

• D’s have surfed up to start with a tight gap and have to read their spacing and decide to backskate to defend, defend forward and make early contact on the puck carrier or non puck carrier, and when to try and kill the play early or defend as a 2v2. Attack will either produce a chance off the rush or be broken up.

• 3rd whistle Fwd from opposite end creates a new 2v2 low by giving a puck to F1 or F2 to keep their attack on D1 and D2.

• Coach lays puck behind net, first two Xs go around net, either X can pick up puck. First two Os gain ice and angle, play live 2v2.

• On whistle, opposite side coach lays puck and four new players go.

• You can also split this up by having Fwds on one side and D’s on the other if you want D’s defending in pairs together.

• 1st whistle F1 hitch up wall/drive net for shot/ stop at net.

• 2nd whistle F2 attacks up ice.• F1 tracks the puck thru the middle. D1

moves laterally dot to boards and back to dot before receiving the rush.

• D1 and F1 read the rush trying to kill the play in NZ with pressure to the puck dot to boards and inside dot line support.

• Drill ends when D1/F1 recover puck and skate puck into NZ.

• Both ends go at the same time.

Page 18: DRILL E-BOOK

• Drill starts with a line waiting across the dots with a puck, at different depths.

• Back checker position is as F3 shooter. Receives a pass from the coach for a shot on net.

• As soon as BC shoots the puck, 3v2 attack is initiated up ice, with BC communicating with D surfing up.

*Move puck around to start in different lanes.**Move BC around for different F3 depth.

• Drill starts with a forward attacking straight up ice 1v1. Play it out IZ. Whistle.

• F2 attacks up ice 1v1, with F on offense backchecking and D attacking up ice.

• Drill progresses up ice 2v2. Play it out IZ.

for pass from player on goal line/trapezoid.• 2 offensive players in front can pass to each other/work together to

score.• 20 to 30 second shifts before changing players.

Page 20: DRILL E-BOOK

• Drill starts with a rimmed puck from coach.• F closest to rimmed puck moves to retrieve puck along wall.• Fs work to keep/gain possession and score or look to get puck

to D on blue line for point shot. If puck is moved to point, Forwards try to gain inside position for tip/rebound. If low D gain possession, look for clearance.

• 20 to 30 seconds; if goal is scored or puck is cleared, new rimmed puck from coach .

Page 21: DRILL E-BOOK

• Set up with 3 attackers on both sides of the end zone with 3 defenders down the middle.

• The attackers try to maintain puck control and make as many cross ice passes as possible through the defenders.

• One defender tries to force the puck carrier to limit their time and space and force passes into tight areas. The other two defenders position themselves to cut off cross ice passes.

• Defenders may rotate in a new active.

• Teams play 3 vs 1 in the circle.• Two players outside circle with skates inside

the hash marks. Defender and one attacker move freely inside the circle.

• Defender can score into empty net.• Coach spots pucks as needed.• Run drill in both circles. 30 second shifts.

43 DMANNING POWER PLAY #3

Page 23: DRILL E-BOOK

• This drill is set up like a small area power play. • Two players from each team set up with one on the side wall and one

on top of the circle. • Players should play in the positions that they would play in a game

situation. • The Coach starts play by chipping a puck to the middle of the zone

creating a race for the puck. • The player that gains control of the puck passes to their team to set

up on offence. • The other player must now defend in the middle of the triangle and

try to take away pass.

• Two nets are set up on goal line in front of the face off dots.• One point shooter/passer from each team is placed above the circles

facing their opposing goalie.• The coach starts play by chipping a puck off of the end boards to create

a 2 vs 2 battle for the puck.• Upon recovering the puck, the player moves it quickly up to their point

player as other players set up in a small 3 vs 2 power play situation.• The point player should move laterally to provide pass and shot options.

• PP unit sets up in a box like formation.• The coach passes them a puck that must move

as quickly as possibe so all players touch the puck.

• They then slide to an attack formation for a quick attack.

• After the attack, coach spots a puck deep for a breakout against 4 player PK unit who provide active resistance but only attack fully when PP is set up.

• Vary the resistance.

• Drill starts with chip by coach to create 3 vs 2 battle for puck as PK forwards and PP D enter the zone to create 5 vs 4.

• 2nd puck, coach puts a puck on net and goalie deflects it to corner to create retrieval situation.

• 3rd puck, coach chips deep for a breakout against PK unit.
