OIL & GAS INDUSTRY Customized trends in Simulation Training

Page 2: Drilling Industry v5.2

Agenda• Objectives for Technology Training has Evolved

• Customized Training – The Time is Now

• Customized Training – The possibilities are Immense

• Customized Training – The technology is Mature

• Customized Training – Why is it good for EVERYONE

Page 3: Drilling Industry v5.2

Technology Objectives have EvolvedMethods changed Radically to Support current Technology

The Rig technology has increased exponentially

Mechanical Support Technology has evolved 3D Printing

Technology pipeline to be developed to meet labor demand

May impact profitability of Big Players

“The first company with a “break-out strategy” could position itself as the leader, in a highly competitive recruiting and retention environment”

Industry Skill / Knowledge Shortage has advanced

New Hire Skill Set expectations have amplified

New Hire Training, Pre Rig experience has augmented

Trailing an Experienced Hand is not enough

Training NEEDS to begin before Rig Completion - HOW

What is involved in a customized simulation

Page 5: Drilling Industry v5.2

Need for Customization• “All operations are essentially the same”

Yet – every process is different,

– every situation is different,

– every professional operating equipment is different,

– every equipment manufacturer is different,

• It is possible to continue with ‘”Generic”’ training and derive trivial, incremental benefits, session after session.

• Customized Training can raise the standards of the objective achievement exponentially.

• The Trainee is more engaged, more absorbed, more interested because the training is now aimed directly at making her specific work:

– safer, enhanced, more productive and more satisfying.

Customization Possibilities– Nearly EVERY aspect of simulation training can be customized to

meet very specific situational requirements and objectives

• Customized Software – to depict and manage the exact process or hazard being simulated

• Customized Hardware – to include in the simulation the exact make/model of machinery and equipment that will be used in the field, without bending metal

• Customized Environment – Let the training happen on Your Rig, Your Control Room, Your Operator Chair, Your Control system wherever the maximum benefit

• People being trained are Your people – they should receive Your training, if they are to be effective for You

.

Custom Simulation Environments

– For “near real”, immersive, and interactive virtual environments

– Custom mathematical and physics models to get the precise consequences and response you are looking for, as in the ‘Real World’

– To practice your own custom ‘SOP’s’ and Best Practices.

– Capture Knowledge of seasoned hands

Rig Pass Module

Familiarize with the Rig that You will work on.

Know all the ‘hidden’ dangers, Health / Safety requirements, and obstacles that you may encounter, before you get on-board.

Custom Rigs, Processes and ModelsSurface Tool Operations

• Know the exact capabilities and limitations of the equipment you will use

• Know how to use the equipment before you start to use it

– Improve Productivity

– Reduce risk and danger

HIL Testing Advantages• HIL Testing can be done during all stages of the development and testing process. (The costs of correcting errors are much less if they are found earlier in the design process).

• All the components and sub-systems may not be physically available at any point in time to allow for full scale physical testing – with HIL testing, a desired test sequence can be followed at any stage of the development process.

• The HIL systems can be duplicated in multiple locations, which run the same models so that testing can be done on “identical” components or systems and issues can be duplicated for testing solutions.

Page 21: Drilling Industry v5.2

HIL Testing Advantages (cont’d.)

•HIL testing capability has proven to significantly reduce the overall development time and greatly improve the quality and reliability of the final product.

•HIL system models can improved the communication of specifications between suppliers and OEMs.

•And of-course  the HIL platform provides the ability to simulate a variety of  scenarios that may be too difficult,  unsafe, time consuming or expensive to perform in a ‘real’ environment

Page 22: Drilling Industry v5.2

HIL Testing - CONS-Complexity of having to create a full simulated test environment before first use

-Results obtained will be as accurate as the fidelity of the simulation model

-Every component and sub-system associated with the system / component under test needs to be modelled – this can impact the cost of simulation and the possibility of minor errors creeping in

-The models need to be computationally efficient so that they can run in real-time with very small integration step sizes.

-Test can only cover that which has been modelled – there is no possibility of ‘unknown’ errors being revealed
