DESCRIPTION

This book documents the site analysis, research, and design processes of dripps +phinney studio. The summer was spent exploring work-flow in the design process between grasshopper 3d and more traditional design methods in the design of a hurricane house in Batesville, VA.

using triangulation as a guide, diagram-ming how the points of the triangles could be transformed into column grids, parti-tions, or volumes on a building interior

  • 13structural support spatial organization + circulation

diagrams illustrating ways of reducing the column total on the interior of the space by tapering the supports to a single point on the floor or moving all of the columns to the exterior edges

  • 14 embedded building + drainage basins

the first grasshopper definition makes a volume embedded in the landscape. the second definition divides the cut and fill along the curve.

balancing cut + fill along a curve

rhino model of built structure, based on the lines of the existing shed, extending along the driveway and partially embed-ded in the landform. tiered basins along the driveway and down into the northern gully accomodate drainage.

  • 15cut + lift topography using graphmapper

this definition uses graphmapper in grass-hopper to create a volume embedded in the landscape by lifting one edge profile related to a graph.

the graph can be edited to have several openings, which could serve different func-tions on the site or relate to views.

  • 16 work-flow with meshes in rhino/grasshopper

this definition series tests different work-flows to create openings and towers in meshes. the experiments vary from almost no grasshopper to solely grasshopper.
