Blue Ocean Thinking

A Drishtee (दृष्टि) presentation

Think Global, Act Local! Both globalisation and localisation are powerful meme

today. Both are necessary to fulfill our needs and aspirations.

There are two powerful forces at work with an interplay of both the meme but in two distinct directions.

The first one can be called as “localisation of globalisation” and the second one as “globalisation of localisation”.

Page 3: Drishtee village Immersion Program

“Localisation of Globalisation” “Localisation of globalisation” tends towards a global

monoculture where all places look alike and lifestyles are indistinguishable.

The economy is ruled by a monolithic currency and dominated by a few trans-national corporations. It thrives on its scintillating speed and the enormity of its operations.

At present, this is a powerful force but it has run into stiff resistance due to falling public health, mal-nutrition and rising inequality across the world.

There is a widely felt need to balance this force by the forces of “globalisation of localisation”.

Page 4: Drishtee village Immersion Program

“Globalisation of Localisation” “Globalisation of localisation” tends towards a vivid multi-

culture that in its diversity and in its unity reflect a harmony and balance with the local geo-climatic condition as well as the distinctive heritage of local cultures across the world.

In an evolved state, each of the local community begins to gather design and art from around the globe, but made out of local materials.

As the local areas are largely self-sufficient to meet their daily needs, people also get ample time to travel to distant places and gather stories and design.

This is the vision and way of life of Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam(वसधुैव कुटुम्बकम) or The Global Village.

Global Village as a Product

Just like Classical Music, Dance and Art forms (शास्त्रीय सगंीत), as many of us are familiar with, the Classical Way of Life in the Global Village is based on rigorous practice (साधना) of the community (समाज) in both its production and consumption.

It is marked by a culture (ससं्त्कृतत) based on aesthetic sense (सौंदयय दृष्टट).

The Classical Way of Life follows a civilization (सभ्यता) with an underlying socio-economic system (सामाष्जक अर्य-व्यवस्त्र्ा).

It follows traditions (परंपरा) which have underlying scientific knowledge (तत्व ज्ञान).

Page 6: Drishtee village Immersion Program

Global Village as a Product (contd. 1)

Global Village follows lifestyles that subject all their products through the 3-screen scientific tests.

Page 7: Drishtee village Immersion Program

3 Screen Scientific Tests For any product to be brought into use by the local community that , it must pass through the 3 Screen Scientific Tests:

Screen #1: The Material Scientist’s View(वैज्ञातनक दृष्टट)

Screen #2: The Health Scientist’s View(वैद्य दृष्टट)

Screen #3. The Social Scientist’s View(दाशयतनक दृष्टट)

Page 8: Drishtee village Immersion Program

Screen #1: The Material Scientist View

Is the product useful (उपयोगगता) and provides comfort (सुववधा)?

Page 9: Drishtee village Immersion Program

Screen #2: The Health Scientist’s View

Is the product beneficial for health (स्त्वास्त््य)?

Page 10: Drishtee village Immersion Program

Screen #3. The Social Scientist’s View

Is the product beneficial for the

community (समाज)?

Page 11: Drishtee village Immersion Program

The Outcome

Healthy (स्त्वस्त्र्)Prosperous (समदृ्ध) Inclusive (समावेशी) Self-Reliant (स्त्वावलंबी) and

Sustainable (सतत)

Global Village community (समाज).

Global Village as a Product (contd. 2)

In the Asian model of development, urban and rural are not two distinct spaces but a continuum.

In turn, there is a synergistic and symbiotic relationship among city dwellers, village dwellers and forest dwellers. They function as a supply chain.

The Global Village is a microcosm of the Worldwide Culture and Civilisation.

Global Village as a Product (contd. 3)

The role of cities in the Global Village vision is for trading, pilgrimage, as regional administrative capitals and as a showcase of eclectic arts and culture, science and technologies .

The role of forests is as a sustainable source of raw materials that draws upon the forest income and not its capital. Forest dwellers act as stewards of the forest resources and have their own distinctive lifetyle.

Cities are much fewer in number where only a small section of people stay and larger numbers visit for trade or pilgrimage.

5 Essential ArtsThere are 5 essential arts (कला) that every individual in the Classical Village community (समाज) must learn:

Page 24: Drishtee village Immersion Program

Stage 2: Experience In the second stage, the traveller begins to experience

the Global Village in places where it stands in some form and is further evolving.

The experience could be thru’ the food production, cooking and dining traditions, clothe production and dressing styles, artisanship to produce various household items and work tools, housing, education and healthcare practices, music and dance and the overall way of life of a Global Village.

This is interspersed with narratives of how further evolution of the Global Village is likely to happen.

Page 25: Drishtee village Immersion Program

Stage 3: Experiment In this stage, the traveller begins to affirm their role in

the Global village with consultation and guidance from our experts.

The traveller begins to tinker with the tools of their avowed profession and engages in deeper learning to master their trade over the years.

Learning happens through the Guru-Shishya tradition where in the Shishya or disciple is fully devoted to learn the art and science of their trade from the Guru.

Page 26: Drishtee village Immersion Program

Stage 4: Co-create This is the final stage where the traveller has arrived, found

their place in the Global Village community and is fully immersed in its way of life.

The traveller can also chose to move on to a new place or move back to their native place with all their learnings of the Global Village way of life.

They only carry the spirit and the design, but not the substance of the Global Village, from one location to another.

Each Global Village thus reflects the unique characteristics of geo-climatic conditions and the cultural heritage of every location. Global Villages across the world are thus united in their diversity.

Challenges and Opportunities

Business-as-usual is awash with the red ocean of value appropriation, slender profit and even loss making entreprises and unsustainable products and services.

Blue ocean thinking calls for a pioneering approach but leads to uncontested markets.

How to develop products & services for the Global Village communities?
