Power. Power to take cont rol of our own lives. Power to create our own music, literature. art and culture. Power to serve as leaders wit hin our own comm unities. "what is PrideFest about?" In appearance, it is a festival comp lete with entertainment.stages, lights. banners, activities, food and festival-gocrs. Thai is the physical being ofPridcfest. As they describe their experiences. you begin to realize thatPridejesr is about creating a wor ld where LGBT people are the major presence. PrideFest isour village and we are its citizens.

PridsFsst is about:

People. People who share a similar life story. People who have experienced similarhard ship!' and strugg les. People who have an appreciation (or our commonalties. and respec tfor our differen ces. All eyes will look. to the skies and the air will bepunctuated with long 'ooooohs" and "ahhhhhs' for thespectacular PrideFcst fireworks displays planned for Fridayand Saturday nights, June 8th and 9th at approximately10:15 p.rn. and 10:30 p.m.respectively. Rockets will belaunched from the island in LakeMichigan just east of the festivalgrounds, so the best viewing spotwill be at the lakefront. The raindate is Sunday night.

The tradition of festivalfireworks started in 1995, andPrideFcst was the first Pridefestival in the country to havethem. Since then. followingWisconsin 's lead, more festivalshave initiated their ownfireworks disp lays. Last year,Pridefest Vice President SusanCook was out on the island withflare in hand, setting ofTabombardment of J.inch shells. She did so well, the fireworkscaptain asked if she wasinterested in a part-time job forthe rest of the summer!.Whenever I watch fireworks , Ihave to be close enough to feelthem, last year, I really felttbemll exclaimed Cook .

The Miller Bn......i ng Company will underwrite the costsof this year's display, which shou ld last about t 5 or 20minutes. Wisconsin 's own Bartolotta Fireworks Co.. one ofthe nation 's foremost fireworks and pyrotechnics

producers, will create thefireworks, design the show, andlight the fuses. This is the samecompany that produces theastonishing July 3rd fireworksdisplay on Milwaukee's lakefront.

Over the years someaspects ofthe fireworks show haveremained the same, but somehave been refined. It takesmonths to plan a fireworksdisplay. starting with theexplosives themselves. BecauseBartolone's makes its ownfireworks. it designs each show tolit the customer. In Pridefesr'scase. this includes bright rainbowcolors and continuing attempts tocreate pink triangles . Bartolotta'salso strives to meet the standingrequest for plenty of loudexploscos. Ultimately,.the showbuilds 10 a climax that will thrillthe C)~ and ears of spectators.

Enjoy! And feel free to' occooh" and "ehhhhh' to yourhean's content!

FRIDAY NIGHT THEME PARTY: WIZARD OF "ODDS"The Friday night theme party tradition continues

SKOTT FREEDMAN: PRODIGY CHILD TURNED STUNNINGSONGWRITERPsrform ing Frida y June 8 - Miller Stage

A native of New Jersey Freedman grew up a childpiano prodigy, winning statewide competitions by thetime he was fifteen. He then began straying off thepath of his classica l mentors, writing music tha t was

_~_ haunting ly beautiful and furtherdeveloping his taste for di ssonance. Inman y of his songs today, Freed manuniquely susta ins a note just a seco ndlonger than the listener.expec ts and thensuddenly reso lves it.

In his faster songs, Freedman's fingersfly across the piano, am azing listeners at

his speed and accuracy. Indeed , live audience membershave test ified that sometimes his hands move so fastthat it loo ks like he 's being played on high-speed film!

Other times, Freedman performs the most tender ofballads and uses his soft attack and delicate grace no testo make the piano breathe with him . Lyrica lly,Freed man also exce ls in his undeniable talen t to writ epersonal songs that still connect to his listener s."Freedman 's lyrics offer consisten t vision into histhought s and emot ions, ra the r than the occasiona lglimpses that most songw riters seem to offer," hai ledGeo rgetown Universit y's Hoya after a performance lastyear.

Freedman keeps the listener interested, coveringsubjec ts as light as skinny dipping to the intense.da rker side of thin gs such as the loss of a loved one.He is a true songwrite r with each song unfolding asto ry that initially invites the listener in, offers someinsight into one of many raw emot ions, and then gentlyshuts the door again .

Skon Freedman is a piano man for the newmillennium Ii pan cebarock. pa n folk and part pop.deliveri ng messages 10 a general audience with a oneto-one intensity. With a comforting voca l tim bre *' [aDavid G ray and his signature yod el-trill.Freedman is someone to be not iced .

Freed man's musica l ca ree r began a tthe age of six. over-dramatica lly slowingdown "Hatikva h" (the nat iona l an themfor the country of Israel I on the family'ssma ll. electric organ in the basement tillhe felt it was "mournful enough" tobring tears. When he dra gged his parents downstairs tolisten. they hes ita ntly smiled and said. "Urn ...goodhon ey. keep working at it . . .".

Fifteen years later, Skott Freedman is one of themost exci ting singer/songwriters to emerge on theBoston music scene. His work has been both nat ion allyand internationally recogn ized and devoted fans arebecoming increasingly aware of this young rising stareach year.

Freed man 's stunning three and a half oc tave voicevaries in its flexibility, ran ging from the fiery outburs tsin "Fairyta les" ("Well it can' t always he like thefai rytales tha t we used to believe and sooner or la tertime's gonna run out "I to the soft, barely audiblewhi sper in "Angels in the Snow" ("I knew you 'd beleaving, I d idn 't know how soo n...my life emptied outin a single afternoon "). Rich in tone and pungent withemotion, Freed man uses his voice as a true instrument.varying the expression and intensity with every note. The final prod uct sends the listener on an emotionalroller coas ter ride.
