PROSPECTUS 2016/174

Palapye: The TownThe first people believed to have settled in the town are the Bamangwato people. The settlement of Phalatswe, also called Old Palapye, was the capital of the Bamangwato people in the beginning of the 20th century. The ruins of Phalatswe still stand today, a few kilometres away from the centre of Palapye

Over the years its position has made it a convenient stop-over on one of Southern Africa’s principal North–South rail and road routes. Its central location has made it “a meeting place’’ for people from major towns across the country. Highly active economic activities in construction have led to economic growth and population increase in Palapye, making the place a viable market for business.

The town hosts the Morupule Power Station which is the country’s principal domestic source of electricity as well as the Morupule Coal Mine which supplies coal to local and international markets.

The place is growing in stature as a hospitality centre evidenced by the presence of world standard accommodation facilities ranging from luxury hotels and lodges to camping grounds, cottages and bed & breakfasts to meet the needs of business community and tourists. You will also find several well known tourist attractions close to Palapye such as the Khama Rhino Sanctuary which is a home to endangered black and white rhinos and is situated 50 km from Palapye. There is also the Tswapong Hills which have significant historical sites such as the Moremi Gorge which is home to a magnificent bird life and is also an area of great beauty as it has a permanent water source. The most outstanding structure in Palapye is the remains of the London Missionary Society Church, which was built between 1891 and 1894.

INTRODUCTION

The College of Sciences currently comprises Departments of: Earth and Environmental Sciences; Mathematics and Statistics; Physics and Astronomy; Chemical and Forensic

Sciences; and Biological and Biotechnological Sciences. Original research in all these disciplines is the primary objective of the College and a number of College Centres of Research Excellence are being developed to provide students with opportunities to be involved in cutting-edge applied research projects.

It is important that Science and its applications provide the basis of the future knowledge economy of Botswana and the African continent more generally. For this objective to be achieved it is vitally important for the College to train graduate students in scientific research and to this end the admission of postgraduate students started in 2013 undertaking Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees by research thesis. Research opportunities will

increase rapidly from this year and include programmes which include coursework and professional development. A particular emphasis of the College will be graduate courses which provide exciting modern courses which are specifically needed for the economy of the region.

MATHEMATICS AND APPLIED MATHEMATICS

Award: MSc, PhD Duration: MSc (2 years), PhD (3 years)

MSc & PhD

Mathematics forms part of our everyday life and is the cornerstone of modern society. Mathematical ideas, concepts and techniques serve as a powerful and versatile tool that can be used to solve a variety of practical problems. In fact, financial institutions, advances in science and engineering as well as improvements in technology depend on the mathematical theories and their applications. The application of mathematics to solving real world problems is to a larger extent influenced by theories in pure and applied mathematics. Our MSc and PhD programmes in Mathematics offers an excellent balance between Pure and Applied Mathematics.

The MSc programme comprises of course work and research. The first year is dedicated to modules that enhance basic mathematics skills and other modules geared towards the research project. The second year consists of a research project chosen in consultation with a staff member.

The PhD programme aims to develop research students who can eventually make original and significant contributions to the subject and society. It is offered by research only, and takes a minimum of 3 years. Areas of research include;

• Biological applications• Macroeconomics projections (inflation, GDP)• Climate Modelling• Algebra• Topology• Differential Equations (Ordinary and Partial)• Numerical Analysis• Mathematical modelling (Including Fluid Flow)• Mathematical/Functional Analysis and Operation
