MKE Drive Systems are proud to announce their success in winning

this tender to supply new drive systems to LondonWaste.

The new drive systems are to power the incinerator booster fan motors.

These fans are currently powered by old ABB SAMI drives. The old

SAMI drives have served well since the site was put in to service but

have now come to the end of their serviceable life. While new drive

systems are being installed, full advantage will be taken of modern

technology; the new ABB ACS880 systems will be the regenerative

variants. This gives two advantages: The active front end technology

allows the drive system to feed power back on to the supply when

slowing fans down (previously this was dissipated via braking

resistors), also the fully controlled active front end provides low

harmonic operation; with drive systems at this power harmonic

disturbance must be taken seriously. For more information on harmonics please paste the following link in to your web browser to see

Welcome to the fourth issue of our newsletter.

Each autumn MKE hold an annual charity ball, details of this event and

the money raised are on page 4.

We also have another start up sheet for you, this time the ACS355

machinery drive. If you have missed any of the previous start up

The ABB 580 range of drives are now fully available. This range started with the general purpose

ACS580 and has now been complimented with siblings in the form of the water industry specific

ACQ580 and the HVAC industry specific ACH580.

If you are already familiar with the ACS880 industrial drive you will recognise the keypad layout straight

away. The ABB aim, with the new drive ranges, is to build user familiarity regardless of which drive you

are using; if drives have common parameters they will have the same parameter number and will be

accessed in the same way.

• All three drives in the 580 range are available in wall mountable IP21 and IP55 bodies up 250kW.

• All three drives have, as standard, a built-in second generation swinging choke for reduced harmonic

disturbance. • Safe torque off (STO), according to EN/IEC 61800-5-2, SIL 3, PL e

• There is a free of charge PC based drive configuration tool which can be downloaded from the ABB

web site.

In recent years ABB operator control panels have become recognised as intuitive

user friendly interfaces. The new ACX-AP-x Assistant control panels, fitted to the

580 range of drives, have been developed to add additional user functionality with

further improvements in ease of use. As always the information displayed is

changeable by the end user, up to three items can be displayed at one time, but now

multiple screens can be created. These screens can show information in numeric

format, bar graph, trends, or even dial gauges.

If you prefer to make drive settings via the software tools the connection is now via a

USB socket which can be seen at the bottom of the accompanying image. The USB

protocol removes the need to worry about communication settings and a standard micro USB cable is all that is required. A further bonus with the USB connection on

the operator panel is no need for access in to control enclosures. Previously

enclosures need to be opened, which usually meant isolation was required. If the

operator keypad is fitted to the enclosure door connecting the drive is extremely easy, plug the USB cable

in to the operators keypad and start the Drive Composer software.

Staff focus

Following on in the series of introductions we have been

including in each issue of Driving Forward this may be a face

already familiar to many of you.

Russel Kimpton joined the MKE Drive Systems team just over nine years ago during July 2007. At that time the department

was just the five man nucleus of what has now grown four fold

and is currently experiencing one of it’s most successful years to

date.

Russel brought with him a wealth of electrical engineering,

drives, and automation experience gained during

over 30 years of industrial

experience.

Starting out on the tools

working for various

companies with rolls such

as production electrician,

panel builder, maintenance

electrician, electrical team

leader, Russel’s career has

progressed through the

machine building industry,

with time in a technical

office roll, through to project

engineering in an FMCG

environment, and project

management in the utilities

industry.

Russel says “coming from a background within large companies,

sometimes working internationally, it has been a very good experience to be part of the driving force that has grown the

MKE Drives Systems Business through such a successful

growth period”.

MKE held it’s 9th autumn charity ball on Saturday

8th October. This annual black tie event is always

in aid of charity, this years beneficiary being the

Heart of Kent Hospice. The generosity of guests

from multiple companies, along with their MKE

hosts, generated a donation of £1,890 this year for

Heart of Kent Hospice.

Over the years the MKE Autumn Charity Ball has

supported several charities, generally raising in the

region of £2,000 per year.

Previous charities supported by the event are:

• Demelza hospice care for children (5 years) • Oliver Fisher special care baby trust (2 years) • The Air Ambulance Service (1 year)

“The generosity of guests

from multiple companies,

along with their MKE hosts,

generated a donation of

£1,890 this year for

Heart of Kent Hospice”.

As always the venue was packed with guests and

hosts all sporting their best formal dress. The main

events of the evening were the three course meal,

dancing to the live band, and of course the

obligatory charity raffle. Aside from these there

were quieter areas and plenty of time to catch up

on things and socialise on an evening where work

was not on the agenda.
