ABSTRACT
It deploys electricity in electromagnets in an extraordinarily
efficient manner, rather than using as a fuel source coal, gas oroil-- can be one-half that of conventional rail.
By employing no wheels, maglev eliminates the friction, andconcomitant heat, associated with conventional wheel-on-railtrain configurations.
Driving without wheels, Flying without wings dealswith the present scenario of magnetic levitation(maglev) with Linear induction motor (LIM)

1750 John Mitchell conducted the
first experiments measuring the
magnetic forces between the poles of amagnet . The principle of magnetic
force is critical to Maglev train
operation. 1900 Robert Goddard and Emile
Bachelet conceive the concept of
frictionless trains.

history
1970 German and Japanese engineers start
research and development towards their
versions of Maglev technology.
1969 American scientist James R. Powell
and Gordan T. Danby patented the first design
for Maglev trains.

INTRODUCTION
Development of magnetic levitatedtransport systems is under progress indeveloped countries and it is just a matter
of time they make inroads to India aswell.
Therefore, it will be interesting to knowabout the science and technology behind
mass ground transport system known as"magnetic flight".

MAGNETIC LEVITATION
Launching systemswould use magnetic
fields to levitate andaccelerate a vehiclealong a track .
Reaching the end of
the track, thevehicle could switchto more conventionalrocket engines.

MAGNETIC LEVITATION
Diamagnetism is a very weak form ofmagnetism that is only exhibited in thepresence of an external magnetic field.
The induced magnetic moment is very
small and in a direction opposite to thatof the applied field.
When placed between the poles of a
strong electromagnet, diamagneticmaterials are attracted towards regionswhere the magnetic field is weak.

oDiamagnetism can be used to levitate light piecesof pyrolytic graphite or bismuth above a moderatelystrong permanent magnet.
oSuperconductors are perfect diamagnets.
oThe magnet is held at a fixed distance from thesuperconductor or vice versa.
oThis is the principle in place behind EDS maglevtrains.

Applications
Being is pursuing research in Maglev toprovide a Hypersonic Ground Test Facilityfor the Air Force.NASA plans to use magnetic levitationfor launching of space vehicles into low
earth orbit. The mining industry will also benefitfrom Maglev.

30% less energy than a high-speed train
operating costs are approximately half that of
conventional long-distance railroads. no fuel to increase fire hazard
The materials used are non-combustible,
poor transmitters of heat, and able to
withstand fire penetration.
