OVERVIEW

DRIWISA™ LOAD-BREAK DISCONNECTOR SWITCHESGROUP OPERATED

DRIWISA™ three-pole load-break disconnecting switches are used to open medium voltage circuits up to 38 KV, connecting or disconnecting lines or cables, sectionallize ring-circuits, as well as to connect or disconnect transformers under load conditions. DRIWISA™ disconnecting switches are built according to international standards (IEC).

They are designed according to a modular system, parting from a non-load isolator switch (refer to section Non-load isolating switches), whose galvanized steel frame has several drillings that allow the conversion of an isolator switch into adisconnecting switch without any problem, even when already installed in the field, by simply adding the arcing chambers. This efficent design also allows the easy replaceability of parts and maintenance.

The live parts of the disconnecting switch are made of silver-plated electrolytic copper (99.9%), as well as the straight contacts. Contact elements, due to their relative overdimension and a very high contact pressure, guarantee a

minimum wear-off during the live of this equipment, offering a high resistance against the impacts provoked by short-circuits. Despite this high contact pressure, the operation of DRIWISA™ load-break disconnecting switches is easy and light.

In combination with quick-make/quick break drives, DRIWISA™ disconnecting switches can be operated independently from the closing or opening strength and speed exerted by the operator personnel. Thus the necessary speed to reduce arcing to a minimum (well confined within the extinction chamber) when opening and to avoid arcing when closing is achieved, guaranteeing a simultaneous and complete closing action of blades and leaving the three poles in position to operate under load conditions in the next opening operation. DRIWISA™ load-break switches are available for right or left operation according to the position of the drives and operator levers during the switch assembly, in order to meet any switchgear layout.

LDTP type load-break disconnecting switches are three-pole devices, group-operated, designed to isolate or interrupt one section of a three-phase circuit from another under load conditions, meaning that the disconnecting action could be made when current is flowing.

Under load conditions, LDTP switches have an interruption and disconnecting capacity up to their rated current with a power factor of 1.0 to 0.7.

These switches are always equipped with drive mechanisms to perform a quick opening action. They are also provided with mechanisms to perform a quick closing action, to guarantee the closing capacity under load conditions, due to the high operation speed achieved by means of a strong spring built into these mechanisms.

Available drive mechanisms are the types C and D.

The fused versions of disconnecting switches incorporate a fuse-holder to receive DRIWISA™ high voltage, high breaking capacity fuses (refer to Current Limiting Fuses Catalog). The combination of DRIWISA™ load-break disconnecting switches with DRIWISA™ fuses represents the ideal equipment to interrupt and open under short-circuit conditions, due to the direct action of either of the three fuses on the switch, opening the three poles at a time, after the short-circuit current has been interrupted by the fuse(s).

DRIWISA™ disconnecting switches can also be provided with a shunt-trip coil for remote control (refer to section Accessories). For signalling purposes, auxiliary contacts can be also adapted (refer to section Accessories). For further protection and security purposes a grounding switch can be added, which can be installed on either side of the switch or directly integrated onthe frame of the disconnecting switch (refer to section Grounding Switches).

DRIWISA™ disconnecting switches can be installed into the switchgear in a horizontal, vertical or even inverted position, whatever the requirements of a specific installation are.

DRIWISA™ load-break disconnecting switches extinguish the voltaic arc through their three arcing chambers, built of synthetic material, providing maximum electrical and mechanical security and arcing hooks with a special tungsten head, extremely resistant to thermal impacts. All these elements are of the highest quality, to assure maximum breaking capacity.

The mechanical disconnection sequence of these switches is described as follows:

To initiate the disconnecting process, the main blade (3) opens, driven by the drive shaft (1) and the push rod insulator (2). At this moment the current passes through the retaining contact (4) and the arcing hook (5). At a certain point during the blade travel and through the swivel stop of the arcing hook (6), this last one opens very quickly, thus interrupting the current inside the arcing chamber (8), where the voltaic arc is extinguished.

The arc extinguishing process inside the arcing chamber takes place the moment the swivel stop of the arcing hook reaches its limit. The arcing hook (A) then will pass through the extinguishing zone (C). The energy of the voltaic arc will produce the gasification of a part of the surface of the extiguishing plates (D), which will only be very small due to the relatively long distance between one plate and the other (distance Y in figure b). The so developed gas will accumulate within the extinguishing zone, because the slot (G) is closed by the arcing hook. When the head of the arcing hook has slipped through the slot, reaching the gas expansion zone (B), thus leaving the slot free (figure d), the extinguishing plates are pushed against

a) Arcing chamber

This sophisticated system of all arcing chambers provided with DRIWISA™ disconnecting switches makes it possible to offer equipment with a breaking capacity of 14 MVA, guaranteed for 40 switching operations under maximum rated conditions.

DISCONNECTION OF PURELY INDUCTIVE AND CAPACITIVE CURRENTS:The system of the arcing chambers described above is specially suitable for the disconnection of currents with an inductive or

capacitive power factor as low as 0.1. Several laboratory tests switching unloaded transformers and capacitors, have shown that DRIWISA™ disconnecting switches perform interruption times shorter than half a cicle at 50 Hz (shorter than 3/4 of a cicle at 60 Hz). This is an important evidence to show that the breaking capacity of these switches is even higher as the guaranteed values.

LDTP disconnecting switches are manufactured for the following ranges and versions:

LDTP ... / ...0 Disconnecting switch without fuse-holder (unfused version)

LDTP ... / ...x Disconnecting switch with fuse-holder (fused version)

Maximum voltages: 7.2 kV, 17.5 kV, 25.8 kV and 38 kV

Rated currents: 630 A y 1250 A

LDTP unfused switches consist of an iron-angle frame (A in figure 3a) on which six standoff insulators are fixed in two rows of three each (B). The blade sets or moving contacts (C) together with the arcing hooks are hinged to contacts fixed on the top of the lower row insulators, while the fixed contacts are mounted on the top of the upper row (D).

The fixed contacts are generally connected to the live side, whereas the moving contacts are connected to the outgoing circuit.

Fused switches consist of an iron-angle frame (A in figure 3b) on which nine standoff insulators are fixed in three each (B). The blade sets or moving contacts (C) together with the arcing hooks are hinged to contacts fixed on the top of the middle row insulators, while the fixed contacts are mounted on the top of the upper row (D). The fuse clips (L) are installed between the middle (E) and the lower insulators (F).

The terminal pads are located in the upper row (B) and lower row (F) insulators. The terminal pads on the fixed contacts (upper row) are generally connected to the live side whereas the pads having the fuse clips located on the lower row insulators are connected to the outgoing circuit.

The shaft (K) rotates 90 degrees, limited by the limiter plate(s) or swivel stop(s), from fully open to fully closed.

The blades (C) close and engage into the fixed contacts (D) by the action of the push insulator rods (J) which are moved by the cams on the main shaft (K) when rotated.

the arc (H). This process originates the sudden expulsion of the gas, which then dissipates in the expansion zone and the arc isthen blasted and quenched in the slot. Thus the current will be extinguished on its following zero-crossing.

The arcing hooks (H) are mounted on the blades and engage into the extinction chamber (G) through its opening.

The fuse is held by the fuse clips (L). The striker pin (M) on the fuses is located in front of a paddle and lever mechanism (N)which in the event of fuse operation releases the quick-break mechanism by releasing the locking pawl in the spring. The blow of any of the three fuses will open the switch.

The blades and hooks are factory-set to ensure simultaneous operation for connection and disconnection of the three phases. Adequate pressure of the blades against the fixed contacts is achieved by means of a spring located in each blade set. Adjustment of the hooks is done to assure its proper insertion on the chamber.Use in combination with fuses:

DRIWISA™ LDTP fused switches in combination with DRIWISA™ high voltage and high interrupting capacity current-limiting fuses (see Current-Limiting Fuses Catalog), form an entirety that gives protection against short-circuit, disconnecting in an automatic shape the three phases when one or more fuses blow up, which guarantees the opening - and isolating of the fault- in the case of a short-circuit, because of any fuse, when blowing, frees a striker pin which acts over the disconnector switch, which opens simultaneously the three phases, once the fuse has interrupted and limited the short-circuit current.

This way the operation is specially useful to protect sensitive loads when operating in two phases, since when a fault occurs inone phase, the three phases open simultaneously.

Protection against overloading:

When using DRIWISA™ LDTP fused switches equipped with a shunt trip coil, a protection system which includes not only the protection against the short-circuit currents can be completed, but also against overloadings through the utilization of current transformers and an overcurrent relay (51) or overloading relay. Consult Technical Bulletin 302 for further information.

Options and accessories:

DRIWISA™ LDTP switches can be provided with different options and accessories (see Selection Charts on pages D1-7 y D2-1 and section F), such as shunt-trip coils for remote electrical operation or in combination with protection relays (overcurrent, overloading, phase fault, etc.) (see Technical Bulletin 302). For signallization and control, auxiliary contacts can be provided (see Techical Bulletin 301). For further protection and security a grounding switch integrated to the disconnector switch with built-in mechanical interlock can be provided, to avoid the possibility of simultaneous operation.

In most cases, the disconnector switch is operated from the outside of the enclosure through a operator mechanism such as a manual disc-type operator. It also can be operated through a motor drive operator, installed in the front side of the enclosure or directly on the disconnector switch shaft (see section F).
