Beijing Section

In 1998, Dr. Jane Goodall visited China for the first time. During her visit, Jane called for

more people to participate in environmental, humanitarian and animal protection activities

in their local communities. She visited China several more times in 2005, 2006, 2007, and

2008. During these years, the Jane Goodall Institute in China, and the Roots & Shoots Global

Environmental Education Program, has grown in scale and impact.

From September 15-20, Dr. Jane Goodall began her China Tour 2010 in Beijing. The year

2010 is the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Jane Goodall’s launch of her historic research on chim-

panzees in Gombe National Forest Park of Tanzania in 1960. The Jane Goodall Institute China

celebrated “Gombe 50” with a series of key events in Beijing. Below are the highlights of her

trip in Beijing.

SEPTEMBER 15TH

Dr. Jane Goodall discussed the core meaning of “cor-

porate social responsibility” with the 80 people present

at the CSR luncheon, as well as gave participants an

introduction to the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), and Roots

& Shoots (R&S) environment protection activities. She

encouraged corporations to be more socially responsible

in regards to the environment, and shared her wish that

corporations willfully and heartedly support the Roots

& Shoots Environmental Education Program.

Dr. Jane Goodall’s China tour officially began with a media

conference which consisted of more than thirty Chinese and foreign

media representatives in attendance. Following the theme of “Gombe

50th Anniversary”, Roots & Shoots Beijing displayed several precious,

representative pictures of Dr. Jane working in Africa at the conference.

Dr. Jane spoke about the need for environmental action, Roots and

Shoots, and Gombe 50. She then answered questions from the media

and encouraged everyone to protect the environment. Meanwhile,

R&S Beijing issued Dr. Jane's China tour schedule and expressed their

sincere gratitude for the media’s support

SEPTEMBER 16THChina Science and Technology Museum Forum

On the morning of September 16, Dr. Jane gave a lecture

in the China Science and Technology Museum. Under the theme

“Protect Endangered Species”, Dr. Jane told several stories of

initiatives to save endangered animals. The 400-seat lecture

hall was packed with enthusiastic audience members and

guests. Liu Bing, a professor from Tsinghua University and

famous science and culture disseminator, participated in the

forum as the guest host. Other guests included Professor

Huang Chengming, vice-director of China National Zoological

Museum, Professor Ding Changqing, researcher and protec-

tor of crested ibis, and Zhao Xiaodong, representative of the

R&S group from the high school affiliated with Renmin Uni-

versity of China.

The afternoon of September 16, Dr. Jane together with Deng Juying, vice-librarian of the

Capital Library, cut the ribbon for the library’s exhibition of "Jane's Journey----Dr. Jane Goodall’s

photo exhibition of 50 years research on chimpanzess in Gombe." Co-presented by the Capital

Library and JGI China, the exhibition promoted Dr. Jane’s

philosophy of living in harmony with nature, and also intro-

duced her groundbreaking research and contribution to the

global environmental education to the public.

On Sep 21, 2010, Dr. Jane Goodall came to Chengdu to visit Roots & Shoots friends

for the third time. It has been 3 years since her last visit. However, her flight was de-

layed because of a thunderstorm, and as a result some activities on her schedule had to

be canceled. Even so, she was still able to observe the growth and success of Roots &

Shoots in western China throughout her 2-day tour. Dr. Jane hopes that Roots & Shoots

can do more for environmental and humanity education with the support of society.

Roots & Shoots global environmental education program

The global environmental education program is conducted in over 120

countries as one of the components of the Jane Goodall Institute’s (JGI) Roots

& Shoots program. By providing information and training for youth and en-

couraging youth to establish groups in school and their community, the pro-

gram brings improvement to the environment and the communities.

volunteers. The program began in 2006 and has been

carried out annually with different themes. As of 2010 it

has been conducted five times.
