Major cyclones in 1988 and 2007 caused heavy
damages to settlements and other properties of
the Pouroshova.
Due to effect of climate change and lack ofemployment in the neighboring districts, a large of
people are migrating and coming to this small
municipality for employment creating unplanned
urban slums within the city.

Background of the Project

During the devastating cyclone Sidr and Aila, around 1953HHs have
been affected in the mongla pouroshava itself who has lost their housesand had disruption in the livelihood, mostly living in the urban slums.
Not only within the municipality itself, a large number of people are
migrating and coming to this area due to effects of climate change and
also for better employment from the neighboring districts like Bagerhatand Satkhira.
This huge number of population are settling within the city forming
unplanned urban slums occupying major resourceful land of the Mongla
port and other government entities.

Selection of Beneficiaries and land acquition
Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP II)Ministry of Disaster Management & Relief
Among this long list of beneficiary, 120HH have been identified andverified in the 1stphase as to be the most vulnerable families living in
the Balur mat area.
This Balur mat area is owned by Mongla port, where the HHs are
residing in shanty houses forming a very unplanned urban slum.
Recently the port authority issued eviction letter to the slum peoplewhere the port is planning to build a recreational park to attract more
visitors
As a result, the slum dwellers are relocating in other parts of the
municipality forming another urban slum.
Mongla municipality took initiative to relocate this people and acquired5.06 acre of Khas land from the DC office where they will be relocated.
This settlement will be built in 2 phases, 1stphase comprising of 120HHs
with all related facilities.
